Taxonomic Note on Nannastacus nyctagineus (Crustacea: Cumacea: Nannastacidae) from Korean Waters

  • Korean nannastacids have recorded only eight species belonging to genera Campylaspis and Cumella. In this paper, Nannastacus nyctagineus Gamȏ, 1962, is redescribed and illustrated as a new species of Korean fauna in this study for the first time. Korean female specimens of Nannastacus nyctagineus correspond well with the original description by Gamȏ, 1962 based on only female specimens. Gamȏ has described that new species, Nannastacus pruinosus could be distinguished from N. nyctagineus based on only male specimens. The Korean male specimens of N. nyctagineus undoubtedly match well with the description of N. pruinosus with the following common features: the surface of the carapace is covered with numerous granules; pereonites and pleonites have similar patterns of the teeth on dorsal surface; the proportion and armature of the dactylus of pereopod 2 is similar; the number and pattern arrangement of the setae on the surface in antenna 1, pereopod 1, and uropod are the all most same. Nannastacus pruinosus Gamȏ, 1962 is proposed as a synonym of N. nyctagineus described in this study. This represents the first record on the genus Nannastacus from Korea.

The Larval Development of Pagurus lanuginosus do Haan(Crustacea, Anomura) Reared in the Laboratory (PAGURUS LANUGINOSUS DE HAAN의 유생 발생에 관한 연구)

  • A study on the complete zoeal development and the glaucothoe of Pegurus lenuginosus de Haan wvas conducted in the laboratoy. 1) P. lanuginosus had four zoeal stages and a single glaucothoe stage. 2) At mean temporature $13.6^{\circ}C$ and mean salinity $33.67\%_{\circ}$, total duration of the zoeal stages was approximately 31-32 days. 3) The zoeal larvae of P. lanuginosus can be easily distinguished from those of other Pagurus species in having 7+7 telson processes of which number as well as shape is consistent throughout all the zoeal stages. 4) The antennal exopodite bears five pulmose setae, and the endopodite is naked throughout the zoeal stages. 5) The 6th abdominal segment has no mid_dorsal spine on its posterior margin during the 3rd and 4th stages. 6) The basipodites of uropod are naked on the distal margin. 7) Mandibular palp is absent in the 4th stage. 8) Antenna of glaucothoe is long extending far beyond the chelipeds. 9) Ocular scale is absent in the glaucothoe. 10) Glaucothoe has 3+3 telson processes on the distal margin of the telson.

Larval Development of the Grooved Tanner Crab, Chionoecetes tanneri Rathbun, 1893 (Decapoda: Brachyura: Majidae) Described from the Laboratoryreared Specimens

  • This paper documents the defining morphological characteristics of the larval stages of Chionoecetes tanneri Rathbun, 1893, the grooved Tanner crab, from specimens reared in the laboratory. Chionoecetes tanneri larval stages include two zoeae and one megalopa. The first zoea is characterized by: six setae on the posterior margin of the carapace; postero-lateral spines on abdominal somites 3 and 4, extending beyond the posterior margin of adjacent somites and bearing 9-10 spinnules; 12 plumose setae and one stout distal plumose seta present on the margin of the scaphognathite of the maxilla; and one fused lateral spine and one articulated dorso-medial spine on each fork of the telson. The second zoea is characterized by: 9 setae on the postero-lateral margin of the carapace; a serrated mandible molar; a mandibular palp bud; 25-26 plumose setae on the margin of the scaphognathite of the maxilla; pereiopods with well-developed gills and buds; and four pairs of stout setae on the posterior margin of the telson. For the megalopal stage, the distinguishing characteristics include: a rostral spine equal in length to the supraorbital spine; six setae on the exopod of the uropod; and a single spine on the ischium of the second pereiopod. This study allows C. tanneri larvae to be distinguished from the larvae of known sympatric congeners. This information provides a basic taxonomic tool for researchers in fisheries management and zooplankton ecology who are addressing issues related to trophic interactions, metapopulation dynamics and ecosystem impacts in the evolving marine resource management strategies in the North Pacific, and those related to Chionoecetes species in particular.
