  • As the storm water runoff characteristics in urban areas have changed owing to urbanization, centralized facilities to reduce the urban flood runoff had been implemented. On the other hand, because they have their limitations, LID (Low Impact Development) of the distributed facilities for storm water runoff reduction is being actively planned and applied. The purpose of this study was to analyze the runoff characteristics for the spatial distribution of typical LID element techniques. This study set a study basin consisting of the five subbasins with the same basin and drainage systems, and analyzed the flood runoff characteristics from the two scenarios, one is for the locations and the other is for the number of green roofs (GR) and permeable pavement (PP), respectively, selected as typical LID element techniques. The SWMM implementation results showed that GR reduces 11.07% of the total and 3.42% of the peak amounts of storm water runoff, and PP leads to 18.09% of the total and 17.94% of the peak discharge reduction for a subbasin. Such a reduction rate is constant regardless of the LID locations, and increases linearly with the number of LID applications. The different runoff reduction rates between the GR and PP applications appear to be due to the effects of the different hydraulic conductivities in the control parameters for each LID.

  • In order to investigate the performance of the infiltration collector well and its effect on the runoff reduction, real-time field measurements are carried out. Based on these field data measured at Seongnam, Osan and Cheongju sites, the runoff reduction volumes and the peaks-cut-rate are quantitatively analyzed and compared with the total rainfall amount, the 10min averaged and the 10min maximum rainfall intensity. This results show that the infiltration collector well is very effective to reduce the runoff in urban area, which gives environmentally the positive to supply ground waters. It is also presented that the infiltration collector well is able to reduce up to 70% of the runoff and 40~70% of peaks, compared to a general one.

  • This study has an object to evaluate runoff characteristics with ILLUDAS model and SWMM owing to each rainfall distribution type of Huff's quartile and each rainfall duration time of 30 ,60, 120 and 180 minutes. As a result of this study, Type-Ⅰ Extreme (TIE) rainfall distribution pattern with Huff's 2nd quartile is adequate for Cheju volcanic island . To decide optimal rain fall duration , time of concentration and critical duration should be compared and analyzed each other. In this study, 30 and 120 miniutes were suggeste to iptiaml duration time of A and B study basins. It is concluded that the magnitude of peak runoff discharge is maximum with Huff's 4th quartile, and that of total runoff volume is maximum with Huff's 4th quartile for ILLUDAS model and with Huff's 1st quartile for SWMM. As rainfall duration time increasing is increasing . Also in case of total runoff volume, volumen by SWMM is less than by ILLUDAS model as to variation ratio of total runoff volume in A and B study basin. Therefore, the resulots of this study canb e sued as basic data in determining adequate rainfoal duration time and rainfall distribution type and used for urban drainage systems analysis and design at small urbanization catchment is Cheju volcanic island.

  • In order to establish and implement the total maximum daily load (TMDL) management plan in Korea, it is necessary to set the source units and calculate discharge loads for non-point source pollutants such as BOD, COD, SS, TN and TP. This study analysed the corelation between stormwater runoff characteristics and event mean concentrations (EMCs) of non-point source pollutants. As the result of the corelation analysis, we knew that all the antecedent dry days (ADD) and the rainfall correlated lowly with non-point source pollutants in the urban areas such as resident area, industrial area, business area, road area and parking area. Therefore, it is necessary to get all samples from stormwater starting point to stormwater ending point and standardize the sampling method of stormwater in order to obtain more accurate EMCs for landuse.

  • In determining design runoff for the design of drainage systems, the concept of critical storm duration is applied. However, rainfall distribution is usually determined without well-defined standards. In this paper, through the application of ILLUDAS model to Sanbon basin, which is a small urbanized watershed, effects of various rainfall distributing types upon the determination of critical storm duration are throughly analyzed. As a result, it is revealed that peak discharge rates as well as critical storm duration are greatly influenced by the applied of rainfall distributions such as uniform, triangular, trapezoid, huff, central type using IDF curve. Keywords : critical storm duration, rainfall distribution, urban runoff, design storm, ILLUDAS.

  • In this study, a runoff hydrograph and runoff volume were calculated by using the kinetic wave theory for small urban watersheds based on the concept of low impact development(LID), and the effective imperviousness was estimated based on these calculations. The degree of sensitivity of the effective imperviousness of small watersheds to the impervious to pervious area ratio, infiltration capability, watershed slope, roughness coefficient and surface storage depth was then analyzed. From this analysis, the following conclusions were obtained: The effective imperviousness and paved area reduction factor decreased as the infiltration capability of pervious area increased. As the slope of watersheds becomes sharper, the effective imperviousness and the paved area reduction factor display an increasing trend. As the roughness coefficient of impervious areas increases, the effective imperviousness and the paved area reduction factor tend to increase. As the storage depth increases, the effective imperviousness and the paved area reduction factor show an upward trend, but the increase is minimal. Under the conditions of this study, it was found that the effective imperviousness is most sensitive to watershed slope, followed by infiltration capability and roughness coefficient, which affect the sensitivity of the effective imperviousness at a similar level, and the storage depth was found to have little influence on the effective imperviousness.

  • In this study the optimal volume for non-point source control retention is estimated considering spatio-temporal variation of land surface. The 3-parameter mixed exponential probability density function is used to represent the statistical properties of rainfall events, and NRCS-CN method is applied as rainfall-runoff transformation. The catchment drainage area is divided into individual $30m{\times}30m$ cells, and runoff curve number is estimated at each cell. Using the derived probability density function theory, the stormwater probability density function at each cell is derived from the rainfall probability density function and NRCS-CN rainfall-runoff transformation. Considering the antecedent soil moisture condition at each cell and the spatial variation of CN value at the whole catchment drainage area, the ensemble stormwater capture curve is established to estimate the optimal volume for an non-point source control retention. The comparison between spatio-temporally varied land surface and constant land surface is presented as a case study for a urban drainage area.

  • Urban runoff models have been continuously developing with concerns for urban flood. Recently, models that be able to quantitatively analyze surface inundation caused by overflowed water from storm sewer were also developed by coupling 1-dimensional sewer model and 2-dimensional surface flow model. However, only overflowed water from storm sewer can be analyzed by the models have been developed until now. They are limited to be not able to analyze surface inundation caused by surface runoff that could not flow into the storm sewer. In order to overcome the limitation, basin-overlap method was devised adding a dummy 1-dimensional sewer layer to the model, so it can consider the efficiency of inflow to the storm sewer system. XP-SWMM 2011 is applied for urban runoff model and the flood event occurred on July 27, 2011 in basin-shaped Sadangcheon watershed is chosen for study inundation event. According to simulation results basin-overlap method reappear the observed inundation event more precisely than traditional method. This results suggest that drainage system has to be improved for reducing inundation caused by surface runoff and would be used as considerations for planning an urban basin design magnitude.

  • Recently, global climate change causes abnormal weather and disaster countermeasures do not provide sufficient defense and mitigation because they were established according to the historical climate condition. Repeated torrential rains, in particular, are causing damage even in the robust urban flood defense system. Therefore, in this study, the change of runoff considering the spatial distribution of rainfall and urban characteristics was analyzed. For rainfall concentrated in small catchment, rainfall in the watershed must be accurately measured. This study is based on the rainfall data observed with Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) and Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) provided by the Seoul Meteorological Administration. Effluent from the pumping station was estimated using the EPA-SWMM model and compared and analyzed. Catchments with rainwater pumping station are small with large portion of impermeable areas. Thus, when the ASOS data where is located from from the chatchment, runoff is often calculated using rainfall data that is different from rainfall in the catchment. In this study, the difference between rainfall data observed in the AWS near the catchment and ASOS away from the catchment was calculated. It was found that accurate rainfall should be used to operate rainwater pumping stations or forecast urban flooding floods. In addition, the results of this study may be helpful for estimating design rainfall and runoff calculation.

  • Urbanization from agricultural/forest areas has been causing increased runoff and pollutant loads from it. Thus, numerous models have been developed to estimate NPS loading from urban area and Long-Term Hydrologic Impact Analysis (L-THIA) model has been used to evaluate effects of landuse changes on runoff and pollutant loads. However, the L-THIA model could not consider rainfall intensity in runoff evaluation. Therefore, the L-THIA model, capable of simulating runoff using 10-minute rainfall data, was applied to the study areas for evaluation of estimated runoff and NPS. The estimated Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient (NSE) values were over 0.6 for runoff, BOD, TN, and TP for most sites and watershed. The calibrated model was further extended to other counties for pollutant load potential evaluation. Pollutant load potential maps were developed and target areas were identified. As shown in this study, the L-THIA 2012 can be used for evaluation runoff and pollutant loads with limited data sets and its estimation could be used in identifying pollutant load hot spot areas for implementation of site-specific Best Management Practices.
