  • Recently, two unique high rise buildings have been designed and constructed in Korea. The two buildings, which consist of mega braces and mega columns, are 70-story, 105-story high rise buildings. Through two external structural frame systems, it will be analyzed mechanical and structural characteristic mega column and mega brace system in this report. Particularly, the joint has been studied through the analytical method based on the load transfer mechanism at the point where a mega brace and mega column meets.

  • When the tall office building first appeared in the street of Chicago in the end of Nineteenth Century, this building type has become a commodity in the development of real estate and been defined as a machine that makes the land pay. With the investigation of land price samples of the high-rise commercial buildings and the overall land price development in the central district of International Settlement in Shanghai, this paper tries to examine the site selection and construction of high-rise commercial buildings have important positive effect on the land value development.

  • The past decade has witnessed an unprecedented boom in tall and supertall building construction worldwide (Wood, 2011). Because of their massive bulk and soaring height, tall buildings often create serious placemaking problems. Employing extensive photographs and sketches, this paper examines architectural and urban design strategies that improve placemaking with tall buildings. The paper embraces a comprehensive approach that considers the relationship of tall buildings to their surroundings at the macro and micro scales. It also considers non-physical factors that tall buildings need to address, such as the social life the building creates. It is hoped that the placemaking factors discussed in this article will provide the required groundwork for future research that explores regulations and codes that foster placemaking with tall buildings.

  • Facing the challenges of urban form and space quality in a high-density environment, the paper puts forward the development trend of three-dimensional and multi-functional design for an urban high-rise complex, and analyzes the design methods of establishing an urban landmark, including multi-functional composition, three-dimensional space integration, three-dimensional traffic organization and energy flow programming. Meanwhile, combined with the specific design case of Yiwu World Trade Center, the practical experience of designing a high-rise complex in China's medium-sized cities is analyzed.

  • Since the response reduction effect on over 200-meter-tall resulting from the seismic isolation system is smaller in general than low-rise and mid-rise buildings, mid-story isolated buildings are considered to reduce the response in the upper part above the isolation story, however, in many cases, the acceleration response just below the isolation story is likely to be the largest. This paper presents the structural design schemes, the design of the main structural frames, and the constructions of a 230-meter-tall super high-rise building with mid-story isolation mechanism integrated in Roppongi, Tokyo. Moreover, this paper shows how the architectural and structural design for integrating a mid-story isolation system in a super high-rise building has been conducted and what solutions have been derived in this project. The realization of this building indicates new possibilities for mid-story isolation design for super high-rise buildings.

  • Infiltration affects indoor environmental and air quality and energy consumptions in buildings. Especially, airflow and the infiltration are more remarkable in high-rise buildings due to the air-driving forces (stack and wind effects). Thus, it is important to understand infiltration distributions in high-rise residential buildings. In this study, the weather-driven infiltration is characterized from the viewpoint of interactions between external wind and stack effect in high-rise residential buildings. To calculate accurately the annual infiltration distributions, this study also suggests an airflow and thermal simulation method with a two-step calibration of air-leakage data. The simulated results show (1) how the interaction between stack and wind effects induce infiltration types (outdoor and interzone air infiltration) and (2) how much the interzone air infiltration (being ignored in previous studies) occurs due to the stack effect, as well as the outdoor air infiltration rates.

  • As the society is industrialization and urbanization, the increase in density of urban population brought about the rise of the land value and the shortage of the land for housing, as a result urban housing shortage was on the rise in a new social problem. According to this high-rise apartment buildings is under construction, but that is required habitation and safety, especially security for fire safety, because it is various age group residents in for 24 hours. Consequently this study aims to present problems and countermeasures against fire safety of high-rise apartment buildings and to construct a residential space to minimize human life and property damage caused by a fire.

  • This paper introduces the outlines of review and approval processes, general criteria and usual practices taken in Japan for the seismic design of high-rise buildings. The structural calculations are based on time-history analyses followed by performance evaluations. This paper also introduces structural design of two high-rise buildings: one is a 100 m high reinforced concrete residential building, and the other is a 300 m high steel building for mixed use.

  • In recent years, urban landscapes across the globe have undergone a remarkable transformation marked by a substantial surge in skyscraper development. This paper offers a comprehensive overview of the contemporary evolution of tall buildings, with a particular emphasis on the Middle East. It surveys tall building development in the ten "tallest cities" across the Middle East, including Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Riyadh, Manama, Tel Aviv, Kuwait, Mecca, and Jeddah, while listing the tallest ten buildings in each city. The focus sharpens on Dubai, UAE, serving as a compelling case study that vividly illustrates the city's swift metamorphosis from a low-rise to a high-rise urban center. Through meticulous examination, the study aims to unveil the key drivers propelling the construction of the world's tallest buildings, asserting that globalization factors play a pivotal role in fostering this transformative shift. The impetus behind this surge is rooted in the aspiration to project a modern and progressive image on the global stage. With Dubai at the forefront, cities in the Middle East strategically endeavor to reshape their international image and reclaim historical grandeur through ambitious skyscraper projects.
