Preference of User Groups on Facade Elements of Remodeled Factories in Korea

  • The transition from manufacturing to service-based economies in highly developed societies during the post-industrial period resulted in the decline of the industrial landscape, leaving it abandoned or underutilized. In pursuit of revitalizing the obsolete industrial space, innovative design techniques based on adaptive reuse are applied to retrofit modern functions to create a new cultural space and preserve the historical, symbolic, and cultural importance of the abandoned industrial facilities. Design considerations based on facade redesign have proven to be one of the most adopted techniques that can help in recreating a new function for the vacant industrial buildings and integrating them into the present-day urban fabric. This paper examines the facade renovation elements used for the adaptive reuse of 15 abandoned industrial buildings presently used as multi-purpose facilities in South Korea. Through a questionnaire survey, this study analyzes the respondents' preference for different facade renovation elements in the 15 sites according to age and gender. The study found that both genders showed similar preference patterns between most elements. But on some elements, females were keener and expressed a stronger opinion than males. There were much more females than males who perceived color and material as the most important exterior elements. The findings of this study can be used for the adaptive reuse of industrial buildings according to user preferences for different facade renovation elements.

  • In order to understand the physical condition and spatial deformation of houses in rural areas in Hodang Village, Ipjang-myeon, Cheonan-si, a rural area with a good settlement environment, physical characteristics and spatial deformation were identified. First, looking at the construction pattern of houses in rural areas, there have been many houses built since the 1990s, and the modernized spatial composition of urban houses appeared. Second, due to the nature of rural housing, work space and residential space are mixed, and it was analyzed that space is used through renovation to solve this problem. Third, Hodang Village was analyzed as an area with good living services, but as a result of the village survey, the proportion of vacant houses was high at 14 (42.4%). This study is conducting continuous rural housing research, rather than a temporary study on rural housing and vacant houses, based on the problems that have been drawn from previous research and existing fact-finding studies.

Urban Campus Expansion in City Block A Case of New York University, New York City, USA

  • This study explores the issue of campus expansion of an urban university using an in-depth case study of New York University in New York City, USA. It investigates the physical pattern and development mechanism of the campus expansion process on a city grid structure. The three elements that characterize NYU's recent campus expansion, are (1) the university's commitment to building a student community around a public open space on a subway network, (2) four types of property acquisition and building development practiced by the university with private developers for space leasing, building renovation and development under changing local development circumstances, and (3) the city's initiative for attracting the private sector whose development activities influence the university's development dynamics. These findings suggest that the expansion planning of an urban university, due to its location in a city, should be placed on a local planning agenda, which can positively contribute to public goals through the collaborative engagement of the private and public sectors.

대학생집단의 도시 공원녹지에 대한 의식에 관한 연구 -대구시 달성공원을 중심으로- (Study on the Values for Urban Green Space in terms of University Students -The Case of Talsong Park in Taegu-)

  • The aim of this paper is to suggest basic guidelines for the urban park development policy in Taegu. This research is mainly based on university students' essay on <private inquiry of urban park in Taegu>. Talsong Park, the most popular site for the students' essay, was selected for the purpose of the study. The research focused on the general images of the park, negative images of the park and aspirations and demands for the park in relation with Talsong Park redevelopment policy. The research of this result suggested that the renovation of Talsong Park from zoo-oriented park to the historic & cultural park status. The other main suggestion was consideration of public participation from the planning stage for the betterment of park management. In addition, the importance of environmental education for the local people was stressed in order to enhance public awareness of environment for the solution of our common environmental problems in relation with Local Agenda 21.

Returning to Daily Life--Research on Chinese Community Construction under the Background of Urban Renewal

  • Currently, China's urban landscape is undergoing a gradual shift from incremental development to stock renovation. Furthermore, the planning and development objectives of urban communities have evolved from solely focusing on physical space construction to promoting sustainable development within a humanistic society. The current approach to community planning and construction, which emphasizes a singular dimension of residential life, overlooks the multifaceted aspects of community life and production. This oversight leads to a lack of attention to interpersonal relationships within the community, difficulties in establishing a connection between people and their environment, and numerous other issues. Consequently, this paper seeks to redefine the concept of sociality within community spaces by considering the continuum of time and space within communities. It aims to delineate the roles of "power" and "rights" within the community context, with a particular focus on everyday life, in order to reevaluate strategies and methods for fostering dynamic community development.

  • 본 연구에서는 우리나라의 측지기준점의 개선에 대하여 소개하였다. 개선의 내용은 기준점의 구조와 정확도에 중점을 두어 설명하였으며, 구조의 경우 3차원 기준점으로 변화하면서 정확도, 포함 정보, 그리고 기준점의 위계에 대하여 서술하였다. 정확도의 개선은 위성측지 기술의 발달과 정밀지오이드를 기반을 주 내용으로 하고 있으며, 기준점의 개념은 위치뿐 만 아니라 중력, 환경정보와 같은 다양한 공간정보를 포함하여 전반적인 정보의 분석이 가능한 점이 강조되었다. 또한 RFID와 CDMA 기술을 이용한 공간정보의 효율성과 신속성을 소개하였다. 이러한 모든 노력으로 한국의 측지망은 보다 정확하고 다양한 공간정보를 효율적으로 전달할 수 있을 것이라 판단되며 이러한 개선이 측지 기준점의 역할과 미래의 방향에 큰 영향을 미칠 것으로 기대된다.

  • Conversion of the building can be a core strategy to activate the urban regeneration. Especially in the decayed district, the conversion or retrofit of old building can be a core catalyst to stimulate the urban regeneration. Throughout the case study, a conversion from office to dwelling, there were figured out the design strategies to respond to spatial, functional requirements. The results are as follows ; 1) The main design strategy is to articulate the space by embedding the wall, mass in the rectangular space. 2) to respond to the small size of space, the flexible, movable wall system Is adopted. This gives the selectiveness to the use of space. 3) to secure the livability of interior space, the buffer zone, a terrace space, is fully utilized. This space acts as thermal buffer zone as well as a semi-interior space.

대한제국 황궁의 조성과 한성부 도시구조의 재편 (Construction of Imperial Palace and Reorganization of Urban Structure in Seoul During the Korean Empire Period(1897-1910))

  • This study attempted to clarify the modern transition process of the urban space through the construction and change of the Imperial Palace as a central facility in Seoul. The road renovation of Seoul, which started in 1895, has established a modern, circular transportation system centered on Gyeongun-gung Palace, the Imperial Palace along with the tram line. In this urban structure, the imperial palace as a central facility of the former monarchy, unlike the previous palaces, could not be located at the top of a road with a longitudinal axis, and it expanded its territory around foreign legionaries and placed a new government office around the perimeter. However, the royal palace was moved to Changdeokgung Palace in 1907 with the throne of Sunjong. With the creation of Changdeokgung, which is the periphery of Seoul, as new royal palace, the status of the imperial palace in the city was remarkably weakened, and Gyeongun-gung, located in the center of Seoul, was also reduced to the current Deoksugung area, turning into an urban facility facing a modern street.

  • 문화특별시 춘천의 혁신적인 도시재생을 위해서는 문화 예술로의 접근을 기반으로 클러스터가 조성 되어야하며, 현재 진행되고 있는 사업을 활성화하기 위해서는 사회 시설 기반 활용을 통하여 기존의 원 도심과 도시 재생 개발과의 연계를 구축하여야한다. 춘천의 지속 가능한 문화예술 활성화 공동체 공간 확대와 사업의 확장은 문화예술, 관광, 산업 융 복합 도시재생의 새로운 랜드마크 성공사례가 될 것으로 사료된다.

1기 신도시 초등학교별 학생수 증감 추세 분석에 관한 연구 (An analytic Study on Elementary School Students Number of increasing and decreasing Trends in first Satellite Cities)

  • 1기 5개 신도시 초등학교 88개교를 조사 분석한 결과 나타난 주요 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 5개신도시중 학생수용률 최고점에 이르는 기간은 평균적으로 5.7년이 소요되었다. 90%이상을 유지한 구간 평균 수용률은 5.7년, 80%이상은 9.1년, 70%이상은 12.3년, 60%이상은 14.6년, 50%이상은 16.6년, 40%이상은 18.4년, 30%이상은 18.9년, 20%이상은 20.5년이 걸리는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 단기적인 민원해결차원에서의 학교내 학급 증설, 또는 추가 학교신설은 향후 유휴교실 발생의 원인이 되고 있어, 학교신설 과제의 단기적 해법이 아닌 20~30년의 장기적 관점에서 학생수 감소에 대비한 신설학교규모, 형태, 운영에 관한 다양한 해법의 모색이 필요하다. 본 연구는 1기 5개 신도시를 중심으로 이루어졌기 때문에 이를 일반화하는 데는 한계가 있어 전국적인 학생수 변동요인 전반에 걸친 추가적인 연구가 필요하다.
