  • Although ordinary least squares (OLS) regression analysis can be used to examine the spatial relationships between environmental equity and urban quality of life, this global method may mask the local variations in the relationships between them. These geographical variations can not be captured without using local methods. In this context, this paper explores the spatially varying relationships between environmental equity and urban quality of life across the Atlanta metropolitan area by geographically weighted regression (GWR), a local method. Environmental equity and urban quality of life were quantified with an integrated approach of GIS and remote sensing. Results show that generally, there is a negatively significant relationship between them over the Atlanta metropolitan area. The results also suggest that the relationships between environmental equity and urban quality of life vary significantly over space and the GWR (local) model is a significant improvement on the OLS (global) model for the Atlanta metropolitan area.

  • Purpose: This study was to identify the correlation between the health-promoting behavior and life satisfaction in elderly of the urban area. Method: The subjects of this study were 202 people aged over 65 who had been living in urban area. Data was collected through questionnaires from April 10th to September 30th, 2002. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient with SPSS statistical program. Result: The health-promoting behavior was given the informations that nutrition practices were most highly ranked, followed by interpersonal relationships, self-actualization, stress management, health responsibility, and exercise. The mean scores of health-promoting behaviors were significant differences in age and educational level. Life satisfaction was significantly related to only living situation. Health-promoting behavior of the subjects was found to be statistically significant and positively correlated with life satisfaction. Conclusion: These results suggested that elderly people in urban areas with high degree of quality of life is likely to be in practice with high degree of health-promoting behaviors. Therefore, it is necessary to develop health promotion programs in order to enhance the quality of life of elderly people in urban areas.

  • This study analyzed the factors affecting urban residents' expectations and participation in community gardens to present basic data of guidelines for community garden management. Urban citizens valued the necessity of community gardens overall, especially residents with outdoor gardens. The experience of private gardens was important in perceiving the need for community gardens, which are public spaces. The creation of community gardens had high expectations for social aspects such as improving quality of life, health promotion, and community revitalization. In particular, residents living in individual housing have high expectations for revitalization of the community, and community gardens can be a mediator for forming and maintaining local communities. Through this, the citizens' perception on the role and function of the garden as a community space could be examined. Expectations for quality of life, health promotion, and community revitalization are factors affecting the necessity of community garden. Participation was high in the creation and management of the community garden, and the necessity of community gardens, expectation for community revitalization, and expectation for environmental purification are factors that affect participation in the management of community gardens. The amount of donations that the residents are willing to pay for community garden management was KRW 75,222 /year on average. Overall, residents with higher need for community gardens and higher social expectation showed higher participation. Urban citizens have high expectations for community gardens, and they perceive the importance of social aspects more than personal aspects such as community revitalization and quality of life. As a strategy for increasing community involvement, it is necessary to set up the processes, determine participants' composition and roles, and establish a system to promote participation. Considering welfare aspects such as community revitalization and improvement of residents' quality of life, motivation and administrative support for participation in the creation and management of community gardens will serve as important factors.

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to analyze the association between the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) and Quality of Life (QoL) between urban and rural residents in Koreausing data from the Korea Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA). Methods: This study was analyzed using the SPSS 20.0 program (IBM SPSS Statistics), and a t-test was performed for difference between GOHAI and QoL, and a multiple regression analysis was used for association between the independent and dependent variables with confounding variables corrected. The statistical significance was p<0.05. Results: Urban residents' average QoL was statistically significantly higher rural residents'(Table 1, p>0.05). For subjects under the age of 65, the QoL increased by 0.30 points for urban residents and 0.39 points for rural residents according to GOHAI increased by one unit (Table 2, p>0.05). Also, for subjects aged 65 years or older, the QoL increased by 0.42 points for urban residents and 0.61 points for rural residents according to the GOHAI, increasing by one unit (Table 3, p>0.05). Conclusion: Through the results of this study, the quality of life of rural residents was lower than that of urban residents. The GOHAI had a stronger impact on QoL among rural residents than in urban areas. In order to address the disparity in QoL between urban and rural residents, it was believed that policies aimed at improving oral health for rural residents should b etaken in to account.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to examine the self-rated oral health status of local residents and their quality of life in urban and county areas in an effort to provide information on how to improve their quality of life. Method : The 2015 community health survey data for South Gyeongsang Province(10 urban regions and 10 county areas) were analyzed. Result : The findings of the study were as follows: As for the characteristics of self- rated oral health, there were better self-rated oral health, less chewing difficulty, less use of dentures, higher rate of receiving dental checkups and more scaling experience in the urban communities than in the county areas. Concerning EQ-5D and happiness index by region, the two were higher in the urban regions than in the county areas. In regard to EQ-5D and happiness index by the characteristics of self-rated oral health, better self-rated oral health status and less chewing difficulty led to higher EQ-5D and higher happiness index. And the two were higher when dentures were not used, when more dental checkups were received and when there was more scaling experience. Conclusion : Therefore in order to boost the quality of life of local residents, the preparation of various educational programs is necessary to raise their awareness of health, and they should be provided with a wide range of medical benefits by dispersing medical institutions that are mostly located in urban communities or by expanding public health services in county areas.

The data was analyzed using ANCOVA. Results: There was no significant difference in the self-esteem score between the two groups after the intervention. But the quality of life score of the experimental group was significantly different from that of the control group after the intervention. Conclusions: The health management intervention using empowerment for the elderly living alone with chronic diseases in urban areas had positive effects on the quality of life. Therefore this intervention can be broadly applied to other elders living alone with chronic diseases in urban areas.

  • Nowadays, as a result of increasing income and spare time, the social demands for better living environment become more increasing. Above all, landscape improvement, the essential part of physical environment, will be a more important subject in urban planning. In these circumstances, classification of urban scenic quality is required for urban landscape development programs. The major purpose of this study is to suggest a technical method of designing urban scenic quality map for urban district area based on the scenery management system of the USDA forest service and literature studies. As a conclusion of this study, four steps are desirable for the technical method for designing a scenic quality map of urban districts areas : 1) Define a landscape unit on the map, 2) Take a photograph of these landscape unit on site, 3) Evaluate the landscape unit by semantic differential scale with landscape adjectives, and 4) Draw the scenic quality map, investigate the landscape characteristics and suggest the landscape scenic development plans.
