In this study, the fly ash was employed as a possible alternative to the bentonite for its high sorption capacity against cationic heavy metal. To consider the constituents of barrier possibly used, the specimens were mixed with different material contents (fly ash : weathered soil : bentonite), then sorption test was performed. Also the specimens were molded on the wet side of optimum moisture contents like mixing ratio of sorption test and their hydraulic conductivities were measured in flexible-wall permeameters. And to confirm the effect of dissolved cations, the hydraulic conductivity tests were repeated by converting the permeant liquids from water to $Cd^{2+}$ solution. Finally, the Cd-concentration at the effluent was analyzed for 500hrs to compare the effectiveness of each specimen in contaminant retardation. Test results showed that the more the ratio of fly ash increase, the more Kd value increase, and the hydraulic conductivity of weathered soil/bentonite (95:5) mixture was the lowest $(2.9*10^{-8}cm/sec)$, and specimens made of fly ash and fly ash/weathered soil mixtures showed similar hydraulic conductivity. Although the permeant liquid was changed from water to $Cd^{2+}$ solution, the hydraulic conductivity of all specimens except for weathered soil maintained similarly like before. Consequently, the initial breakthrough point of Cd in weathered soil specimen was observed at about 5hrs after the test started while that of fly ash specimens was not observed during the whole test period of 500hrs. The results implied that fly ash had a sufficient retardation capacity against contaminant transport possibly by its high sorption capacity although it showed little effect on the reduction of hydraulic conductivity. Based on the test results, it could be concluded that the fly ash can be possibly used as a suitable barrier material in containment system to attenuate the contaminant transport for its high retardation capacity and for the low cost.

The shortage of proven hydrocarbon reserves has resulted in exploration progressing from the offshore into progressively deeper water of the continental shelf. Despite the success of seismic acquisition at ever greater depths, there are marine geological terrenes in which the interpretation of seismic data is difficult, such regions dominated by scattering or high reflectivity that is characteristic of carbonate reefs, volcanic cover and submarine permafrost. A marine controlled-source electromagnetic (CSEM) method has recently been applied to the oil and gas exploration thanks to its high-resistivity characteristics of the hydrocarbon. In particular, this method produces better results in terms of sensitivity under the deep water environment rather than the shallow water. Only in the last five years has the relevance of CSEM been recognized by oil companies who now use it to help them make exploration drilling decisions. Initial results are most promising and several contractors now offer magnetotelluric and CSEM services.
In order to assess the risk of adverse health effects on human exposure to arsenic and heavy metals influenced by past mining activities, environmental geochemical surveys were undertaken in the abandoned metal mine areas (Dongil Au-Ag-Cu-Zn, Okdong Cu-Pb-Zn, Songcheon Au-Ag, Dongjung Au-Ag-Pb-Zn, Dokok Au-Ag-Cu and Hwacheon Au-Ag-Pb-Zn mines). Arsenic and other heavy metals were highly elevated in the tailings from the Dongil, the Songcheon and the Dongjung mines. High concentrations of heavy metals except As were also found in tailings from the Okdong, the Dokok and the Hwacheon mines. These significant concentrations can impact on soils and waters around the tailing dumps. Risk compounds deriving from mine sites either constitute a toxic risk or a carcinogenic risk. The hazard index (H.I.) of As in the Dongil, the Okdong, the Songcheon and the Hwacheon mine areas was higher value more than 1.0. In the Okdong and the Songcheon mine areas, H.I. value of Cd exceeded 1.0. These values of As and Cd were the highest in the Songcheon mine area. Therefore, toxic risks for As and Cd exist via exposure (ingestion) of contaminated soil, groundwater and rice grain in these mine areas. The cancer risk for As in stream or ground water used for drinking water from the Songcheon, the Dongil, the Okdong, the Dongjung and the Hwacheon mine areas was 3E-3, 8E-4, 7E-4, 2E-4 and 1E-4, respectively.
The increase in impervious surfaces due to urban development has caused a groundwater drawdown through the reduction of underground infiltration, flood disaster due to increased rainfall runoff and environmental pollution in higher pollutant concentrations of first flush rainwater. As an alternative to these problems, the needs of low impact development (LID) techniques is increasing in urban areas. In this study, the restoration efficiency of water cycle was assessed at a residential site development applied with the LID rainwater management system. The results of monitoring the water cycling showed that the efficiency of water cycle of LID rainwater management system was improved 41% more than that of conventional methods.

Water has always played a significant role in the lives of people. In urbanised Rome, with its million people. sophisticated supply systems developed and then fled with the empire. only to be rediscovered later But it was the industrial Revolution commencing in the eighteenth century that ushered in major paradigm shifts In use and altitudes towards water. Rapid and concentrated urbanisation brought problems of expanded demands for drinking supplies, waste management and disease. The strategy of using water from local streams, springs and village wells collapsed under the onslaughts of rising urban demands and pollution due to poor waste disposal practices. Expanding travel (railways. and steamships) aided the spread of disease. In England. public health crises peaks, related to water-borne typhoid and the three major cholera outbreaks occurred in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century respectively. Technological, engineering and institutional responses were successful in solving the public health problem. it is generally accepted that the putting of water into pipe networks both for a clean drinking supply, as well as using it as a transport medium for removal of human and other wastes, played a significant role in towering death rates due to waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid towards the end of the nineteenth century. Today, similar principles apply. A recent World Bank report Indicates that there can be upto 76% reduction in illness when major water and sanitation improvements occur in developing countries. Water management, technology and thinking in Australia were relatively stable in the twentieth century up to the mid to late 1970s. Groundwater sources were investigated and developed for towns and agriculture. Dams were built, and pipe networks extended both for supply and waste water management. The management paradigms in Australia were essentially extensions of European strategies with the minor adaptions due to climate and hydrogeology. During the 1970s and 1980s in Australia, it was realised increasingly that a knowledge of groundwater and hydrogeological processes were critical to pollution prevention, the development of sound waste management and the problems of salinity. Many millions of dollars have been both saved and generated as a consequence. This is especially in relation to domestic waste management and the disposal of aluminium refinery waste in New South Wales. Major institutional changes in public sector water management are occurring in Australia. Upheveals and change have now reached ail states in Australia with various approaches being followed. Market thinking, corporatisation, privatisation, internationalisation, downsizing and environmental pressures are all playing their role in this paradigm shift. One casualty of this turmoil is the progressive erosion of the public sector skillbase and this may become a serious issue should a public health crisis occur such as a water borne disease. Such crises have arisen over recent times. A complete rethink of the urban water cycle is going on right now in Australia both at the State and Federal level. We are on the threshold of significant change in how we use and manage water, both as a supply and a waste transporter in Urban environments especially. Substantial replacement of the pipe system will be needed in 25 to 30 years time and this will cost billions of dollars. The competition for water between imgation needs and environmental requirements in Australia and overseas will continue to be an issue in rural areas. This will be especially heightened by the rising demand for irrigation produced food as the world's population grows. Rapid urbanisation and industrialisation in the emerging S.E Asian countries are currently producing considerable demands for water management skills and Infrastructure development. This trend e expected to grow. There are also severe water shortages in the Middle East to such an extent that wars may be fought over water issues. Environmental public health crises and shortages will help drive the trends.
To distinguish the anthropogenic inputs from the chemical weathering with water-rock interaction on the chemical compositons of groundwater in Kwangju city, four different water groups were established based on the landuse type, lithology and topology. The sample from greenbelt area belongs to Group Ⅰ, whereas those from green buffer zone, urban area and industrial area belong to Group II, Group Ⅲ and Group Ⅳ, respectively. The geology of this city mainly consists of biotite granite and granitic gneiss. The concentration of main cations is subject to the behavior of feldspars, micas and carbonate minerals. Cl$\^$-/ and NO$_3$$\^$-/ are supplied by anthropogenic inputs such as domestic sewage whose concentration of these anions is highest in the Group Ⅲ samples. With the Piper diagram, the groundwaters of Group Ⅲ are mainly plotted in CaSO$_4$-CaCl$_2$ type, whereas those of other groups are plotted in Ca(HCO$_3$)$_2$ type, The calculation for the activities of ions and saturation indices of some minerals shows that most of the minerals are undersaturated and plotted in the area of equlibrium with kaolinite. Three factors were extracted from the factor analysis for chemical data. Factor 1 controlled by HCO$_3$$\^$-/, Ca$\^$2-/, SO$_4$$\^$2-/, Mg$\^$2+/ and Na$\^$+/, explains the dissolution of carbonate minerals. mica and plagioclase. Factor 2, controlled by Cl$\^$-/ and NO$_3$$\^$-/, explains the influence of artificial pollution. Factor 3, controlled by Mn, Fe and Zn is subject to the industrial waste water, but the evidence is not clear. Factor 1 is dominant in the Group I and II, indicating that those samples are subjected to natural chemical weathering, The higher scores of factor 2 in the Group Ⅲ samples indicate the potential artificial pollution.
The use of land at the time of investigation of groundwater quality in the rapidly urbanized Bu-chon city is classified into 5 categories based on the change process of land use. The difference in groundwater quality according to the land use and its usage period is tested by non-parametric statistical procedures. The seven constituents of water quality with the highly frequent detection in the area for this study are used for the statistical test. The shallow groundwater quality within the areas of the same land use at the time of investigation varies significantly according to the period of land usage. The concentration of KMnO$_4$consumed and hardness is significantly higher in the old residential area (of more than 20 years old) than in the younger one (of less than 10 years old). The quality of the shallow groundwater is also significantly different among the three categories with the similar period of land usage (of more than 15 years old). The concentration of No$_3$-N, hardness and total solid is significantly higher in the residential area than in the agricultural one (namely, the area used as paddy fields 2 to 5 years ago). The median concentration of these constituents is 2.2 to 3.8 times higher in the residential area than in the agricultural one. The concentration of NO$_3$-N, KMnO$_4$, consumed and Cl is significantly higher in the industrial area than in the agricultural one. The median concentration of these constituents is 5.5 to 18 times higher in the industrial area than in the agricultural one. The concentration of KMnO$_4$consumed is significantly higher in the industrial area than in the residential area. The median concentration of these constituents is 12 times higher in the industrial area than in the residential one. The spatial distribution of shallow groundwater quality in the rapidly urbanized area is closely related to the period of land usage as well as the land use, which is presumed to be attributed to the difference in the concentration and leakage rate of the contaminants leaking from damaged sewer into shallow groundwater.

The collapse accidents during a open ground excavation in urban areas not only lead to human injuries and material damages in the construction site, but also lead to road sinks and damages to the adjacent facilities due to settlement of ground around the construction site. Therefore, during a open ground excavation in the urban areas, it is necessary to thoroughly prepare for prevention of collapse accidents, and consider whole construction stage such as planning, design and construction. In this study, the priorities to be managed mainly were obtained in order to prevent collapse accidents during a open ground excavation. After analyzing results from past accidents cases for open ground excavations, priorities were evaluated regarding collapse-inducing elements using the Delphi technique which is a decision-making method by consensus among experts. As a result, insufficient groundwater treatment, bad geotechnical investigation and instability on construction, etc. were obtained as priorities for prevention of collapse accidents.
As the Urban area grows and more land is developed both within the city and in surrounding areas, hydrologic functions of the natural water cycle are altered. Urbanization creates impervious areas that negatively impact stormwater runoff characteristics. these changes to the natural hydrologic cycle result in the increased flooding, decreased groundwater recharge, increased urban heat island effects. Finally, the land use and other activities result in accumulation and washoff of pollutants from surface, resulting in water quality degradation. Therefore, in this study, evaluating and quantitative analysis of the percolation effect through infiltration experiment of permeable pavement, which is one of the ways that can reduce the problem of the dry stream. Also the SWMM model is used to study the effect of the hydrologic cycle for permeable pavement block contribution.
Recently, there have been a lot of incidents related to ground sinks in urban areas, but restoration work is complicated and inconvenience due to on-site control, and particularly, grouting and soil filling are generally applied as recovery measures, but when the grouting or the soil filling is carried out, material segregation phenomenon occurs in the ground or a lot of restoration amount is often required, depending on the state of sinks and the existence of groundwater under the ground and the soil can be lost due to the flow of the ground water, and thus the purpose of this study is to develop a pouch-type filler applied to a trenchless method for emergency reinforcement of the ground sinks with the aim of quick recovery of the ground sink in urban areas, and as a result, it was confirmed that compression strength and the expansion ratio were different according to the temperature of ground water and the compression strength and the expansion ratio could be controlled by mixing alumina powder.
