The Determinants for Discontinued Use of SNS: Perspectives of Rational Choice Theory and Social Comparison Theory (SNS중단의도의 결정요인: 합리적 선택이론 및 사회적 비교이론을 중심으로)

  • Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors which affect users' fatigue and reluctant intention of using a SNS. In particular, this study focused on the fatigue of SNS users, as the recent excessive use of SNS has led to negative effects such as invasion of privacy, addition and social overload. fatigue This research will explain how producing adverse effects by using SNS caused psychological and mental depression. Previous researches explained that mental fatigue associated with SNS is not simple one and it is complicated with various psychological factors. Considering this fact, this study introduced a behavioral economics concept and a social comparison theory in the research model. Design/methodology/approach For research purposes, this study developed research hypotheses in order to empirically examine the factors that affect SNS users' fatigue and reluctant intention. The empirical research was based on a poll done through 800 research candidates in the SNS fields and the final 451 responses were collected and used in statistical data analysis. The adaptability, trust, and validity to measurement model were verified and the structural relationship in the research model was analyzed through these 451 responses. Findings First of all, maintenance fatigue of SNS had a positive significant effect on coupling and fatigue of SNS and information privacy had a non-significant effect on fatigue. Second, coupling had a negative significant effect on rational inattention, however, perceived cost had a non-significant effect on rational inattention. Third, lateral/upward comparison had a positive significant on user's negative emotions. Meanwhile, user's negative emotions did not have a significant effect on rational inattention.

The Effect of Perceived Similarity on Leader-member Exchange and Deviant Workplace Behavior (비교이론이 리더-구성원 교환이론과 직장 내 일탈행위에 미치는 영향)

  • Using a sample of two-hundred thirty-eight employees in the service industry, this study examined the relationships between perceived similarity, leader-member exchange (LMX), envy, and deviant workplace behavior (DWB) drawing on social comparison theory. Specifically, the current study predicts that an individual who perceives similarity to co-workers whose LMX is higher is more likely to report lower levels of LMX by focusing on upward social comparison. In addition, the study examines the moderating effect of envy in the relationship between perceived similarity and LMX. The results of the study supported the hypotheses, implying that, first, envious feelings coming from lower levels of LMX positively predict DWB. Second, employee envy moderated the relationship between perceived similarity and LMX such that envious people who report being similar to their colleagues also report lower levels of LMX with their supervisors. This means that employees who reported lower levels of LMX with their supervisors, reported committing more DWB than their counterparts. Finally, LMX mediates the relationship between perceived similarity and DWB, indicating that individuals who view themselves similarly to their colleagues report lower levels of LMX with their supervisors and in turn commit more DWB. We believe that it highlights the need for employees to feel special in order to have unique attention by, and relationships with their supervisors. These results have implications and suggest the need for the further study of employee's negative emotions, LMX theory, and DWB.

A Study on the Pungent Taste of Huangbo (Phellodendri Cortex) - Based on Comparison of Its Application by the Yishui School and Zhu Danxi - (황백(黃柏)의 신미(辛味)에 대한 고찰(考察) - 역수학파(易水學派) 의가(醫家)들과 주단계(朱丹溪)의 활용 방식의 비교를 중심으로 -)

  • Objectives : Background research on the history of Huangbo's taste being written as 'pungent' was undertaken, after which its clinical meaning was examined from the medical perspective that was behind the medicinal's taste designation. Furthermore, through various understandings on the 'pungent' taste within the process of clinical application, the meaning of 'pungent' in Korean medicinal research was re-evaluated. Methods : Description of Huangbo's taste as 'pungent' as written in medical texts were chronologically examined to determine its origin. The clinical meaning of the pungent taste of Huangbo was examined within the broad medical perspective of doctors who were behind these descriptions. Results & Conclusions : The pungent taste of Huangbo was first described by Zhang Yuansu, followed by doctors of the Yishui School such as Li Dongyuan, Wang Haogu, etc., during which such knowledge was established and contributed to recognition of Huangbo's effect as tonifying Kidney deficiency and treatment of fire within water, after reaching the Kidney. Li Dongyuan understood the meaning of Huangbo's pungent taste as eliminating Yin fire and restoring the upward direction, ultimately restoring the general 'Rising-Falling-Floating-Sinking' mechanism within the context of his inner damage treatment. On the other hand, Zhu Danxi interpreted the pungentness of Huangbo based on his understanding of the nature of fire and action towards it. It seems as Huangbo's effects were understood within a relatively narrow frame, application of its pungent taste became vague, which gave rise to criticism by later period doctors, ultimately leading to an ambiguous understanding of the pungent taste of Huangbo.

Family Welfare Policies and Fertility Rate (가족복지정책과 출산율)

  • This study seeks the implications for the Korean family welfare policies after examining the characteristics of fertility rates and family welfare policies of advanced OECD countries, and comparatively analyzing the fertility rates among clusters of countries having similar family welfare policies. The fertility rates of most advanced OECD countries declined below the population replacement level in the 1970s, and continuously declined slowly after that period. But in the 1990s the fertility rate of some countries increased, on the other hand that of other countries declined. Such a difference of fertility rates suggests that there is some correlation between the fertility rate and the family welfare policy of each country. Advanced countries became concerned about the decline of fertility rate, established the government Population Issues Committee in order to deal with population problems, and increased family welfare supports. But the level and pattern(focusing on maternal employment supports or child-rearing supports) of each country's family welfare policies are differently developed according to its political ideology, cultural and historical background, and economic environments. A comparative assessment of the fertility rate among clusters of countries having similar family welfare policies demonstrates that the higher the level of family welfare supports is and the level of maternal employment supports in comparison with that of maternal child-rearing supports is, the higher of fertility rate is. And a comparative assessment of the fertility rate changes among clusters of countries also shows that the higher the level of family welfare supports is and the level of maternal employment supports in comparison with that of maternal child-rearing supports is, the higher the increase of fertility rate is or the lower the decrease of fertility rate is. The implications for the Korean family welfare policies are summarized as follows. First, it is necessary to establish the government Population Issues Committee which can study systematically fertility rates and population problems, and provide comprehensive population measures. Second, family welfare supports should be expanded through the establishment of family allowances, the prolongation of maternity leave and child-care leave and the upward readjustment of child-care leave benefits, and the extension of public child-care facilities. Third, maternal employment supports such as public child-care facilities and maternity leave should be given more weight than maternal child-rearing supports such as family allowance. Fourth, it is required to prepare social environments which can provide the youth with the hope that child-rearing is not difficult and gives them happiness.
