  • As a new technical approach, wave energy converter by using vertical motion of water in the multiple water chambers were developed to realize actual wave power generation as eco-environmental renewable energy. And practical use of wave energy converter was actually to require the following conditions: (1) setting up of the relevant device and its application to wave power generation in case that severe wave loading is avoided; (2) workability in installation and maintenance operations; (3) high energy conversion potential; and (4) low cost. In this system, neither the wall(s) of the chambers nor the energy conversion device(s) are exposed to the impulsive load due to water wave. Also since this system is profitable when set along the jetty or along a long floating body, installation and maintenance are done without difficulty and the cost is reduced. In this paper, we describe the system which consists of a float, a shaft connected with another shaft, a rack and pinion arrangement, a ratchet mechanism, and rotary type generator(s). Then, we present the dynamics model for evaluating the output electric power, and the results of numerical calculation including the effect of the phase shift of up/down motion of the water in the array of water chambers aligned along the direction of wave propagation.

  • Experimental results are given for the vertical motion of water in the water chambers for wave energy converter aligned along the wave propagation direction in order to avoid the impulsive wave forces. This paper mainly focuses on the property of the amplitude of the vertical motion of the water surface in the chambers. The amplification has been investigated by dimensionless parameters of wave period to resonance period ratio of the U-shaped oscillation, $T/T_r$, chamber size to wave length ratio, l/L, water depth to wave length ratio, h/L, amplitude of up-down motion of water particles to draft of the front wall ratio, ${\zeta}/D$. It has been shown that l/L should be less than 0.1 and as $T/T_r$ approaches unity the up-down of the water in the chambers is amplified. Also, the structure of the walls which form th water chambers has been examined roughly. It is deduced that the chambers set on both sides of the hull of a single-point moored floating vessel is preferable to those set along a fixed structure such as breakwaters.

  • This study investigates the development of an automatic lightening buoy that can indicate an aquaculture cage at night or in rough weather. The energy for the light is generated by the linear motion of a magnet along with a coil inside the buoy as the waves cause the buoy to oscillate up and down. The principle of the magnet motion is different between the magnet and body of the buoy because the movement of the latter is dependent on the surface wave, while the former is affected by the damper. To obtain a quantitative performance of the buoy, the voltage as well as up and down motion produced by several waves were measured in the wave tank. A shorter wave period, i.e., faster motion, of the magnet produced a brighter light. It is expected that this study can aid in deciding the optimum design of a buoy capable of producing a bright light at any aquaculture site affected by sea or fresh water waves.

  • This study aims to analyze the performance of a submersible fish cage which was designed for developing an economical cage system can be applied in korean aquaculture environment easily. To analyze the performance of the designed cage a model test was carried out. In the test, inclination changes of the upper frame and mooring tensions of model cage were measured during the submerging and surfacing motion in still water and wave condition (period: 2s, wave height: 0.1, 0.2, 0.3m). As a result, in the still water condition the model cage kept horizontal balance and inclination degree of the upper frame was about $1^{\circ}$. In the wave condition, the model cage showed bilateral symmetric up-and-down motion but the average inclination degree of the upper frame was about $0^{\circ}$. When the model cage reached at a depth of 1m, the up-and-down motion of the cage was decreased by 12% compared with that of at the surface (period 2s, height 0.3m). In the same wave condition, the maximum and average line tension under the bottom position were about 8% and 11% respectively compared with that of at surface.

  • The world's supply of water in all forms is enormous. However, only a tiny fraction of the planet's supply is available to us as fresh water, and that is distributed very unevenly. About 97% of oater volume is found in the oceans and is too salty for drinking, growing crops, and most industrial uses except cooling. In addition water supply crises in already-water-short-regions will intensify because population and industrialization increase. Today, remote monitoring and control systems are becoming the cost-effective management tools for almost all water user groups, including irrigators, water districts, municipal water suppliers, and wildlife management groups. This paper represents a new approach in the water-gate control using radio communication. The proposed device is simple in structure and suitable for implementation of water-gate control through the transceiver by radio communication. It was confirmed that the developed device was very efficient to control level of water-gate and to prove the up and down motion of water-gate through the LCD displayer.

  • In general, the salient features of the floating breakwater have excellent regulation of sea-water keeping the marine always clean, up and down free movement with the incoming and outgoing tides, capable of being installed without considering the geological condition of sea-bed at any water depth. This study discusses the three dimensional wave transformation of the floating breakwater moored by piers, and its dynamic response numerically. Numerical method is based on the boundary integral method and eigenfunction expansion method. It is known that pier mooring system has higher absorption of wave energy than the chain mooring system. Pier mooring system permit only vertical motion (heaving motion) of floating breakwater, other motions restricted. It is assumed in the present study that a resistant force as friction between piers and floating pontoon is not applied far the vertical motion of the floating breakwater. According to the numerical results, draft and width of the floating breakwater affect on the wave transformations greatly, and incident wave of long period is well transmitted to the rear of the floating breakwater, And the vertical motion come to be large for the short wave period.

  • Among the various wave power systems, Salter's duck (rotor) is one of the most effective wave absorbers for extracting wave energy. The rotor shape is designed such that the front part faces the direction of the incident wave, which forces it to bob up and down due to wave-induced water particle motion, whereas the rear part, which is mostly circular in shape, reflects no waves. The asymmetric geometric shape of the duck makes it absorb energy efficiently. In the present study, the rotor was investigated using WAMIT (a program based on the linear potential flow theory in three-dimensional diffraction/radiation analyses) in the frequency domain and verified using OrcaFlex (design and analysis program of marine system) in the time domain. Then, an experimental investigation was conducted to assess the performance of the rotor motion based on the model scale in a two-dimensional (2D) wave tank. Initially, a free decay test (FDT) was carried out to obtain the viscous damping coefficient. The pitch response was extracted from the experimental time series in a periodic regular wave for two different wave heights (1 cm and 3 cm). In addition, the viscous damping coefficient was calculated from the FDT result and fluid forces, obtained from WAMIT, are incorporated into the final response of the rotor. Finally, a comparative study based on experimental and numerical results (WAMIT & OrcaFlex) was performed to confirm the performance reliability of the designed rotor.
