  • For a vision-based driver assistance system, unusual motion detection is one of the important means of preventing accidents. In this paper, we propose a real-time unusual-motion-detection model, which contains two stages: salient region detection and unusual motion detection. In the salient-region-detection stage, we present an improved temporal attention model. In the unusual-motion-detection stage, three kinds of factors, the speed, the motion direction, and the distance, are extracted for detecting unusual motion. A series of experimental results demonstrates the proposed method and shows the feasibility of the proposed model.

  • Early detection of oestrus in Korean cows is one of the important issues in maximizing the economic benefit. Although various methods have been proposed, we still need to improve the performance of the oestrus detection system. In this paper, we propose a video surveillance system which can detect unusual behavior of multiple cows including the mounting activity. The unusual behavior detection is to detect the dangerous or abnormal situations of cows in video coming in real time from a surveillance camera promptly and correctly. The prototype system for unusual behavior detection gets an input video from a fixed location camera, and uses the motion vector to represent the motion information of cows in video, and finally selects a SVDD (one of the most well-known types of one-class SVM) as a detector by reinterpreting the unusual behavior into an one class decision problem from the practical points of view. The experimental results with the videos obtained from a farm located in Jinju illustrate the efficiency of the proposed method.

  • Raman spectroscopy was used to study the reorientational motion of hexafluorobenzene in benzene and also in neutral solvents. From the viscosity dependence of the reorientation time, intermolecular interaction in the systems was investigated. No evidence was found to support the presence of long-lived 1:1 complex of hexafluorobenzene and benzene. The unusual viscosity dependence of the reorientational motion observed in the systems was explained as due to the formation of transient complexes.

  • The emergence of a growing number of tall buildings, often with unusual shapes and innovative structural systems, has led to the realization of the need for and the importance of field measurements. The new China Central Television (CCTV) Tower in Beijing is one of tall buildings with a highly unusual shape and a complex structural system, requiring field measurements to identify its dynamic characteristics for the subsequent dynamic analysis of the tower under wind excitation, seismic-induced ground motion and traffic-induced ground motion. The structural system and the finite element model of the CCTV Tower are first introduced in this paper. The computed natural frequencies and mode shapes are then presented as a reference for the field measurement. After introducing the arrangement of the ambient vibration measurement, the field measured natural frequencies and damping ratios of the CCTV Tower are presented and the measured natural frequencies are finally compared with the computed ones. It was found that the structural damping ratios of the CCTV Tower are small and the computed natural frequencies are smaller than the measured ones by about 12~17%.

  • Near-fault ground motion with directivity or fling effects is significantly influenced by the rupture mechanism and substantially different from ordinary records. This class of ground motion has large amplitude and long period, exhibits unusual response spectra shapes, possesses high PGV/PGA and PGD/PGA ratios and is best characterized in the velocity and the displacement time-histories. Such ground motion is also characterized by its energy being contained in a single or very few pulses, thus capable of causing severe damage to the structures. This paper investigates the characteristics of near-fault pulse-like ground motions and their implications on the structural responses using new proposed measures, such as, the effective frequency range, the energy rate (in time and frequency domains) and the damage indices. The paper develops also simple mathematical expressions for modeling this class of ground motion and the associated structural responses, thus eliminating numerical integration of the equations of motion. An optimization technique is also developed by using energy concepts and damage indices for modeling this class of ground motion for inelastic structures at sites having limited earthquake data.

  • Dynamic left ventricular (LV) outflow tract obstruction is a characteristic feature of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy; however, it can also occur in association with hyperdynamic LV contraction and/or changes in the cardiac loading condition, even in a structurally normal or near-normal heart. Here, we report a case of anemia-induced systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve and the resultant intraventricular obstruction in a patient who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting and suffered from anemia associated with recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding.

  • The solitary osteochondroma is a hamartoma of the skeleton which derives from an aberrant subperiosteal germ of the fertile cartilage. Osteochondromas, which are uncommon in the hand can occur at the distal end of the proximal and middle phalanx away from the epiphyseal plate region. We experienced a rare case of solitary osteochondroma arising from distal end of fifth proximal phalanx of hand, and limiting the active motion of proximal interphalangeal joint. The patient was treated by marginal excision and tumor showed characteristic microscopic findings of osteochondroma.

  • The 2008 Iwate-Miyagi Nairiku earthquake ($M_w$ 6.9, $M_{jma}$ 7.2) occurred on 14 June 2008 in Japan. The amplification and asymmetric waveform of the vertical acceleration at the ground surface recorded by accelerometers at station IWTH25, situated 3 km from the source, were remarkable in two ways. First, the vertical acceleration was extremely large (PGA = 38.66 $m/s^2$ for the vertical component, PGA = 42.78 $m/s^2$ for the sum of the three components). Second, an unusual asymmetric waveform, which is too far above the zero acceleration axis, as well as large upward spikes were observed. Using a multidegree-of-freedom (MDF) system consisting of a one-dimensional continuum subjected to vertical acceleration recorded at a depth of 260 m below ground level, the present paper clarifies numerically that these singular phenomena in the surface vertical acceleration records occurred as a result of the jumping and collision of a layer in vertical motion. We herein propose a new mechanism for such jumping and collision of ground layers. The unexpected extensive landslides that occurred in the area around the epicenter are believed to have been produced by such jumping under the influence of vertical acceleration.

  • V type suspension string sets prevent instabilities from swing motion by the horizontal angle and by wind pressure. These installation conditions are controled mainly 3 items - normal swing angle by horizontal angle of line, unusual swing angle by strong wind, minimum vertical loads. We calculated and analysed that factors for the 765kV transmission line condition. And we were tested swing characteristics of V-string sets in real size test situation. So, we find to installation condition for the V type suspension string sets. This results will be used to design of V type suspension string set and to decision of the installation condition.
