In this article, we present a new grey scale image segmentation method based on Fuzzy logic and bitplane techniques which combines the bits of different bitplanes of a pixel inorder to increase the segmentation quality and to get a more reliable and accurate segmentation result. The proposed segmentation approach is conceptually different and explores a new strategy. Infact, our technique consists in combining many realizations of the image together inorder to increase the information quality and to get an optimal segmented image. For segmentation, we proceed in two steps. In the first step, we begin by identifying the bitplanes that represent the lungs clearly. For this purpose, the intensity value of a pixel is separated into bitplanes. In the second step, segmentation values are assigned for each bitplane based on membership table. The segmented values of foreground are combined and the segmentation values of background are combined. The algorithm is demonstrated through the medical computed tomography (CT) images. The segmentation accuracy of the proposed method is compared with two existing techniques. Satisfactory segmentation results have been obtained showing the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.

Context-awareness is an essential part of ubiquitous computing, and over the past decade video based activity recognition (VAR) has emerged as an important component to identify user's context for automatic service delivery in context-aware applications. The accuracy of VAR significantly depends on the performance of the employed human body segmentation algorithm. Previous human body segmentation algorithms often engage modeling of the human body that normally requires bulky amount of training data and cannot competently handle changes over time. Recently, active contours have emerged as a successful segmentation technique in still images. In this paper, an active contour model with the integration of Chan Vese (CV) energy and Bhattacharya distance functions are adapted for automatic human body segmentation using depth cameras for VAR. The proposed technique not only outperforms existing segmentation methods in normal scenarios but it is also more robust to noise. Moreover, it is unsupervised, i.e., no prior human body model is needed. The performance of the proposed segmentation technique is compared against conventional CV Active Contour (AC) model using a depth-camera and obtained much better performance over it.
This study utilized a spatial region growing segmentation and a classification using fuzzy membership vectors to detect the changes in the images observed at different dates. Consider two co-registered images of the same scene, and one image is supposed to have the class map of the scene at the observation time. The method performs the unsupervised segmentation and the fuzzy classification for the other image, and then detects the changes in the scene by examining the changes in the fuzzy membership vectors of the segmented regions in the classification procedure. The algorithm was evaluated with simulated images and then applied to a real scene of the Korean Peninsula using the KOMPSAT-l EOC images. In the expertments, the proposed method showed a great performance for detecting changes in land-cover.
Color segmentation is one of the most challenging problems in image processing especially in case of handling the images with cluttered background. Great amount of color segmentation methods have been developed and applied to real problems. In this paper, we suggest a new methodology. Our approach is focused on background extraction, as a complimentary operation to standard foreground object segmentation, using self-organizing feature selective property of unsupervised self-learning paradigm based on the competitive algorithm. The results of our studies show that background segmentation can be achievable in efficient manner.

The current paper proposes a genetic algorithm (GA)-based segmentation method that can automatically extract and track moving objects. The proposed method mainly consists of spatial and temporal segmentation; the spatial segmentation divides each frame into regions with accurate boundaries, and the temporal segmentation divides each frame into background and foreground areas. The spatial segmentation is performed using chromosomes that evolve distributed genetic algorithms (DGAs). However, unlike standard DGAs, the chromosomes are initiated from the segmentation result of the previous frame, then only unstable chromosomes corresponding to actual moving object parts are evolved by mating operators. For the temporal segmentation, adaptive thresholding is performed based on the intensity difference between two consecutive frames. The spatial and temporal segmentation results are then combined for object extraction, and tracking is performed using the natural correspondence established by the proposed spatial segmentation method. The main advantages of the proposed method are twofold: First, proposed video segmentation method does not require any a priori information second, the proposed GA-based segmentation method enhances the search efficiency and incorporates a tracking algorithm within its own architecture. These advantages were confirmed by experiments where the proposed method was success fully applied to well-known and natural video sequences.

In this study, we propose the unsupervised image segmentation algorithm to estimate dental plaque accumulations on digital imaging with methylene blue disclosed plaque. With this aim, RGB color plane is mapped into HSI coordinates and the circular histogram of Hue is reconstructed by applying Otsu's threshold level. The histogram distribution on Saturation features is also analyzed by maximizing the variance between a plaque candidate and non-plaque one. The dental plaque regions are resolved by applying the composite decision logics based on the threshold level of Hue and Saturation.

This study presents a Bayesian multiple change-point detection approach to segment and classify the observations that no longer come from an initial population after a certain time. Inferences are based on the multiple change-points in a sequence of random variables where the probability distribution changes. Bayesian multiple change-point estimation is classifies each observation into a segment. We use a truncated Poisson distribution for the number of change-points and conjugate prior for the exponential family distributions. The Bayesian method can lead the unsupervised classification of discrete, continuous variables and multivariate vectors based on latent class models; therefore, the solution for change-points corresponds to the stochastic partitions of observed data. We demonstrate segmentation with real data.

Gliomas are the most common malignant brain tumor and cause the most deaths. Manual brain tumor segmentation is expensive, time-consuming, error-prone, and dependent on the radiologist's expertise and experience. Manual brain tumor segmentation outcomes by different radiologists for the same patient may differ. Thus, more robust, and dependable methods are needed. Medical imaging researchers produced numerous semi-automatic and fully automatic brain tumor segmentation algorithms using ML pipelines and accurate (handcrafted feature-based, etc.) or data-driven strategies. Current methods use CNN or handmade features such symmetry analysis, alignment-based features analysis, or textural qualities. CNN approaches provide unsupervised features, while manual features model domain knowledge. Cascaded algorithms may outperform feature-based or data-driven like CNN methods. A revolutionary cascaded strategy is presented that intelligently supplies CNN with past information from handmade feature-based ML algorithms. Each patient receives manual ground truth and four MRI modalities (T1, T1c, T2, and FLAIR). Handcrafted characteristics and deep learning are used to segment brain tumors in a Global Convolutional Neural Network (GCNN). The proposed GCNN architecture with two parallel CNNs, CSPathways CNN (CSPCNN) and MRI Pathways CNN (MRIPCNN), segmented BraTS brain tumors with high accuracy. The proposed model achieved a Dice score of 87% higher than the state of the art. This research could improve brain tumor segmentation, helping clinicians diagnose and treat patients.

Artificial intelligence models are being used to detect facility anomalies using physics data such as vibration, current, and temperature for predictive maintenance in the manufacturing industry. Since the types of facility anomalies, such as facility defects and failures, anomaly detection methods using autoencoder-based unsupervised learning models have been mainly applied. Normal or abnormal facility conditions can be effectively classified using the reconstruction error of the autoencoder, but there is a limit to identifying facility anomalies specifically. When facility anomalies such as unbalance, misalignment, and looseness occur, the facility vibration frequency shows a pattern different from the normal state in a specific frequency range. This paper presents an N-segmentation anomaly detection method that performs anomaly detection by dividing the entire vibration frequency range into N regions. Experiments on nine kinds of anomaly data with different frequencies and amplitudes using vibration data from a compressor showed better performance when N-segmentation was applied. The proposed method helps materialize them after detecting facility anomalies.
Objectives : We aim to assist in choosing an appropriate method for word extraction when analyzing East Asian Traditional Medical texts based on unsupervised learning. Methods : In order to assign ranks to substrings, we conducted a test using one method(BE:Branching Entropy) for exterior boundary value, three methods(CS:cohesion score, TS:t-score, SL:simple-ll) for interior boundary value, and six methods(BExSL, BExTS, BExCS, CSxTS, CSxSL, TSxSL) from combining them. Results : When Miss Rate(MR) was used as the criterion, the error was minimal when the TS and SL were used together, while the error was maximum when CS was used alone. When number of segmented texts was applied as weight value, the results were the best in the case of SL, and the worst in the case of BE alone. Conclusions : Unsupervised-Learning-Based Word Extraction is a method that can be used to analyze texts without a prepared set of vocabulary data. When using this method, SL or the combination of SL and TS could be considered primarily.
