The image segmentation is the most important operation in an image processing system. It is located at the joint between the processing and analysis of the images. Unsupervised segmentation aims to automatically separate the image into natural clusters. However, because of its complexity several methods have been proposed, specifically methods of optimization. In our work we are interested to the technique SFLA (Shuffled Frog-Leaping Algorithm). It's a memetic meta-heuristic algorithm that is based on frog populations in nature searching for food. This paper proposes a new approach of unsupervised image segmentation based on SFLA method. It is implemented and applied to different types of images. To validate the performances of our approach, we performed experiments which were compared to the method of K-means.

This paper proposes a novel feature extraction method for unsupervised multispectral image segmentation based in one dimensional combined neighborhood differences (1D CND). In contrast with the original CND, which is applied with traditional image, 1D CND is computed on a single pixel with various bands. The proposed algorithm utilizes the sign of differences between bands of the pixel. The difference values are thresholded to form a binary codeword. A binomial factor is assigned to these codeword to form another unique value. These values are then grouped to construct the 1D CND feature image where is used in the unsupervised image segmentation. Various experiments using two LANDSAT multispectral images have been performed to evaluate the segmentation and classification accuracy of the proposed method. The result shows that 1D CND feature outperforms the spectral feature, with average classification accuracy of 87.55% whereas that of spectral feature is 55.81%.

An efficient and effective unsupervised single moving object detection framework is presented in this paper. Given the sparsely labelled trajectory points, we adopt a coarse-to-fine strategy to detect and segment the foreground from the background. The superpixel level coarse segmentation reduces the complexity of subsequent processing, and the pixel level refinement improves the segmentation accuracy. A distance measurement is devised in the coarse segmentation stage to measure the similarities between generated superpixels, which can then be used for clustering. Moreover, a Quadmap is introduced to facilitate the refinement in the fine segmentation stage. According to the experiments, our algorithm is effective and efficient, and favorable results can be achieved compared with state-of-the-art methods.
Numerous investigations have explored the integration of machine leaning algorithms with high-resolution drone image for object detection in urban settings. However, a prevalent limitation in vehicle extraction studies involves the reliance on bounding boxes rather than instance segmentation. This limitation hinders the precise determination of vehicle direction and exact boundaries. Instance segmentation, while providing detailed object boundaries, necessitates labour intensive labelling for individual objects, prompting the need for research on automating unsupervised instance segmentation in vehicle extraction. In this study, a novel approach was proposed for vehicle extraction utilizing unsupervised SVM classification applied to vehicle bounding boxes in drone images. The method aims to address the challenges associated with bounding box-based approaches and provide a more accurate representation of vehicle boundaries. The study showed promising results, demonstrating an 89% accuracy in vehicle extraction. Notably, the proposed technique proved effective even when dealing with significant variations in spectral characteristics within the vehicles. This research contributes to advancing the field by offering a viable solution for automatic and unsupervised instance segmentation in the context of vehicle extraction from image.
This study propose a image processing system of unsupervised analysis. This system integrates low-level segmentation and high-level classification. The segmentation and classification are conducted respectively with and without spatial constraints on merging by a hierarchical clustering procedure. The clustering utilizes the local mutually closest neighbors and multi-window operation of a pyramid-like structure. The proposed system has been evaluated using simulated images and applied for the LANDSATETM+ image collected from Youngin-Nungpyung area on the Korean Peninsula.

Unsupervised Video Object Segmentation (UVOS) is a highly challenging problem in computer vision as the annotation of the target object in the testing video is unknown at all. The main difficulty is to effectively handle the complicated and changeable motion state of the target object and the confusion of similar background objects in video sequence. In this paper, we propose a novel deep Dual-stream Co-enhanced Network (DC-Net) for UVOS via bidirectional motion cues refinement and multi-level feature aggregation, which can fully take advantage of motion cues and effectively integrate different level features to produce high-quality segmentation mask. DC-Net is a dual-stream architecture where the two streams are co-enhanced by each other. One is a motion stream with a Motion-cues Refine Module (MRM), which learns from bidirectional optical flow images and produces fine-grained and complete distinctive motion saliency map, and the other is an appearance stream with a Multi-level Feature Aggregation Module (MFAM) and a Context Attention Module (CAM) which are designed to integrate the different level features effectively. Specifically, the motion saliency map obtained by the motion stream is fused with each stage of the decoder in the appearance stream to improve the segmentation, and in turn the segmentation loss in the appearance stream feeds back into the motion stream to enhance the motion refinement. Experimental results on three datasets (Davis2016, VideoSD, SegTrack-v2) demonstrate that DC-Net has achieved comparable results with some state-of-the-art methods.

Unsupervised methods for image segmentation are recently drawing attention because most images do not have labels or tags. A topic model is such an unsupervised probabilistic method that captures latent aspects of data, where each latent aspect, or a topic, is associated with one homogeneous region. The results of topic models, however, usually have noises, which decreases the overall segmentation performance. In this paper, to improve the performance of image segmentation using topic models, we propose two topic masks applicable to topic assignments of homogeneous regions obtained from topic models. The topic masks capture the noises among the assigned topic assignments or topic labels, and remove the noises by replacements, just like image masks for pixels. However, as the nature of topic assignments is different from image pixels, the topic masks have properties that are different from the existing image masks for pixels. There are two contributions of this paper. First, the topic masks can be used to reduce the noises of topic assignments obtained from topic models for image segmentation tasks. Second, we test the effectiveness of the topic masks by applying them to segmented images obtained from the Latent Dirichlet Allocation model and the Spatial Latent Dirichlet Allocation model upon the MSRC image dataset. The empirical results show that one of the masks successfully reduces the topic noises.
A multistage hierarchical clustering technique, which is an unsupervised technique, was suggested in this paper for classifying large remotely-sensed imagery. The multistage algorithm consists of two stages. The local segmentor of the first stage performs regiongrowing segmentation by employing the hierarchical clustering procedure of CN-chain with the restriction that pixels in a cluster must be spatially contiguous. This stage uses a sliding window strategy with boundary blocking to alleviate a computational problem in computer memory for an enormous data. The global segmentor of the second stage has not spatial constraints for merging to classify the segments resulting from the previous stage. The experimental results show that the new approach proposed in this study efficiently performs the segmentation for the images of very large size and an extensive number of bands
A multistage hierarchical clustering technique, which is an unsupervised technique, was suggested in this paper for classifying large remotely-sensed imagery. The multistage algorithm consists of two stages. The 'local' segmentor of the first stage performs region-growing segmentation by employing the hierarchical clustering procedure of CN-chain with the restriction that pixels in a cluster must be spatially contiguous. The 'global' segmentor of the second stage, which has not spatial constraints for merging, clusters the segments resulting from the previous stage, using the conventional agglomerative approach. Using simulation data, the proposed method was compared with another hierarchical clustering technique based on 'mutual closest neighbor.' The experimental results show that the new approach proposed in this study considerably increases in computational efficiency for larger images with a low number of bands. The technique was then applied to classify the land-cover types using the remotely-sensed data acquired from the Korean peninsula.
Although image segmentation is a critical part of object-based analysis of high resolution imagery, there has been lack of studies to evaluate the quality of image segmentation. In this study, we aimed to find practical and effective methods to obtain optimal parameters for image segmentation. Evaluations of image segmentation are divided into unsupervised, supervised, and qualitative visual interpretation methods. Using the multispectral UAV images, sampled from urban and forest over the Incheon Metropolitan City Park, three evaluation methods were compared. In overall, three methods showed very similar results regardless of the computational costs and applicability, although the optimal parameters determined by the evaluations were different between the urban and forest images. There is no single measure that outperforms in the unsupervised evaluation. Any combinations of intra-segment measures (V, COV, WV) and inter-segment measures (MI, BSH, DTNP) provided almost the same results. Although supervised method may be biased by subjective selection of reference data, it can be easily applied to detect object of interest. The qualitative visual interpretation on the segmentation results corresponded with the unsupervised and supervised evaluations.
