A computational study of a thermal striping in the upper plenum of PGSFR(Prototype Generation-IV Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor) being developed at the KAERI(Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) is presented. The LES(Large Eddy Simulation) approach is employed for the simulation of thermal striping in the upper plenum of the PGSFR. The LES is performed using the WALE (Wall-Adapting Local Eddy-viscosity) model. More than 19.7 million unstructured elements are generated in upper plenum region of the PGSFR using the CFX-Mesh commercial code. The time-averaged velocity components and temperature field in the complicated upper plenum of the PGSFR are presented. The time history of temperature fluctuation at the eight locations of solid walls of UIS(Upper Internal Structure) and IHX(Intermediate Heat eXchanger) are additionally stored. It has been confirmed that the most vulnerable regions to thermal striping are the first plate of UIS. From the temporal variation of temperature at the solid walls, it was possible to find the locations where the thermal stress is large and need to assess whether the solid structures can endure the thermal stress during the reactor life time.

In this study, a three-dimensional least-square, level-set-based two-phase flow code was developed for the simulation of three-dimensional sloshing problems using finite element discretization. The code was validated by solving some benchmark problems. The proposed method was found to provide improved results against other existing methods, by using a coarser mesh. The results of the numerical experiments conducted during the course of this study showed that the proposed method was both robust and accurate for the simulation of three-dimensional sloshing problems. Using a substantially coarse grid, historical results of the dynamic pressure at a selected position corresponded with existing experimental data. The pressure history with a finer grid was similar to that of a coarse grid; however, a fine grid provided higher peak pressures. The present method could be extended to the analysis of a sloshing problem in a complex geometrical configuration using unstructured meshes owing to the features of FEM.

A heated and expanded helium is used to pressurize liquid propellants in propellant tanks of propulsion system of liquid propellant launch vehicles. To produce a heated and expanded helium, an hot-gas heat exchanger is used by utilizing heat source from an exhausted gas, which was generated in a gas generator to operate turbine of turbo-pump and dumped out through an exhaust duct of engine. Both experimental and numerical approaches of hot-gas heat exchanger design were conducted in the present study. Experimentally, siliconites - electrical resistance types - were used to simulate the full heat condition instead of an exhausted gas. Cryogenic heat exchangers, which were immersed in a liquid nitrogen pool, were used to feed cryogenic gaseous helium in a hot-gas heat exchanger. Numerical simulation was made using commercially utilized solver - Fluent V.6.0 - to validate experimental results. Helically coiled stainless steel pipe and stainless steel exhausted duct were consisted of tetrahedron unstructured mesh. Helium was a working fluid Inside helical heat coil and regarded as an ideal gas. Realizable k-』 turbulent modeling was adopted to take turbulent mixing effects in consideration. Comparisons between experimental results and numerical solutions are Presented. It is observed that a resulted hot-gas heat exchanger design is reliable based on the comparison of both results.
This paper presents a fully coupled three-dimensional solver for the analysis of interaction between pulsatile flow and large deformation structure. A partitioned time marching algorithm is employed for the solution of the time dependent coupled discretised problem, enabling the use of highly developed, robust and well-tested solvers for each field. Conservative transfer of information at the fluid-structure interface is combined with an effective multi-predict-correct iterative scheme to enable implicit coupling of the interacting fields at each time increment. The three-dimensional unsteady incompressible fluid is solved using a powerful implicit time stepping technique and an ALE formulation for moving boundaries with second-order time accurate is used. A full spectrum of total variational diminishing (TVD) schemes in unstructured grids is allowed implementation for the advection terms and finite element shape functions are used to evaluate the solution and its variation within mesh elements. A finite element dynamic analysis of the highly deformable structure is carried out with a numerical strategy combining the implicit Newmark time integration algorithm with a Newton-Raphson second-order optimisation method. The proposed model is used to predict the wave flow fields of a particular flow-induced vibrational phenomenon, and comparison of the numerical results with available experimental data validates the methodology and assesses its accuracy. Another test case about three-dimensional biomedical model with pulsatile inflow is presented to benchmark the algorithm and to demonstrate the potential applications of this method.

In the present study, analyses of initial behavior of an air-launched projectile for varying initial conditions are performed by coupling computational fluid dynamics and 6 degrees of freedom calculations. Accuracy of the present numerical methods is validated by comparing the present result with the measured data. Launching safety analyses are carried out for various ejecting conditions by considering weight of the projectile and magnitude of front and rear ejector forces as the major parameters of initial behavior of the projectile. A response surface of the projectile launching safety is obtained in the range of the major parameters. In all the conditions of zero rear ejector force, unsafe launching behavior is observed. As the weight of the projectile decreases, the initial launching behavior becomes more unsafe.

A static aeroelastic analysis for supersonic aircraft wing equipped with external store under the wing lower surface is performed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational structural technology(CST) coupling methodology. Two mapping algorithms, which are the pressure mapping algorithm and the displacement mapping algorithm, are used for CFD/CST coupling. A three-dimensional unstructured Euler code and finite element analysis program are used to calculate the flow properties and the structural displacements, respectively. The coupling procedure is repeated in an iterative manner until a specified convergence criterion is satisfied. Static aeroelastic analysis for a typical supersonic flight wing is performed and final converged wing configuration is obtained after several iterations.

In the present study, to investigate flows around space launch vehicles at mid-high altitudes efficiently, a three-dimensional unstructured mesh Navier-Stokes solver employing a Maxwell slip boundary condition was developed. Validation of the present flow solver was made for a blunted cone-tip configuration by comparing the results with those of the DSMC simulation and experiment. It was found that the present flow solver works well by capturing the velocity slip and the temperature jump on the solid surface more efficiently than the DSMC simulation. Flow simulations of space launch vehicles were conducted by using the flow solver. Mach number of 6 at the mid-high altitude around 86km was considered, and the flow phenomena at the mid-high altitude was discussed.

Lately, intensity and frequency of natural disasters such as flood are increasing because of abnormal climate. Casualties and property damages due to large-scale floods such as Typhoon Rusa in 2002 and Typhoon Maemi in 2003 rapidly increased, and these show the limits of the existing disaster prevention measures and flood forecasting systems regarding irregular climate changes. In order to efficiently respond to extraordinary flood, it is important to provide effective countermeasures through an inundation model that can accurately simulate flood inundation patterns. However, the existing flood inundation analysis model has problems such as excessive take of analysis time and accuracy of the analyzed results. Therefore, this study conducted a flood inundation analysis by using the Gerris flow solver that uses quadtree grid, targeting the Baeksan Levee in the Nakdong River Basin that collapsed because of a concentrated torrential rainfall in August, 2002. Through comparisons with the FLUMEN model that uses unstructured grid among the existing flood inundation models and the actual flooded areas, it determined the applicability and efficiency of the quadtree grid-based flood inundation model of the Gerris flow solver.
