The treatment of rotor wake has been a critical issue in the field of the rotor aerodynamics. This paper presents a new free wake model for the unsteady analysis for a wind turbine. A blade-wake-tower interaction is major source of unsteady aerodynamic loading and noise on the wind turbine. However, this interaction can not be considered in conventional free wake model. Thus, the free wake model named Finite Vortex Element (FVE hereafter) was devised in order to consider the interaction effects. In this new free wake model, the wake-tower interaction was described by dividing one vortex filament into two vortex filaments, when the vortex filament collided with a tower. Each divided vortex filaments were remodeled to make vortex ring and horseshoe vortex to satisfy Kelvin's circulation theorem and Helmholtz's vortex theorem. This model was then used to predict aerodynamic load and wake geometry for the horizontal axis wind turbine. The results of the FVE model were compared with those of the conventional free wake model and the experimental results of SNU wind tunnel test and NREL wind tunnel test under various inflow velocity and yaw condition. The result of the FVE model showed better correlation with experimental data. It was certain that the tower interaction has a strong effect on the unsteady aerodynamic load of blades. Thus, the tower interaction needs to be taken into account for the unsteady load prediction. As a result, this research shows a potential of the FVE for an efficient and versatile numerical tool for unsteady loading analysis of a wind turbine.
It has been indicated that the rotor/stator interaction has distinct causes of unsteadiness, such as the viscous vortex shedding, wake/stator interaction and potential rotor/stator interaction. In this paper, the mechanism of unsteady potential interaction in one stage axial compressor is numerically investigated for blade row ratio 1:1 and 2:3 at design point and for blade row ratio 2:3 at off-design point in two-dimensional view point. The numerical technique used is the upwind scheme of Van-Leer's Flux Vector Splitting(FVS) and Cubic spline interpolation is applied on zonal interface. In this study the flow unsteadiness due to potential interaction are found to be larger in blade row ratio 2:3 than in 1:1. The total pressure rise in blade row ratio 2:3 is closer to the real value in design point than that in 1:1. The change of unsteady pressure amplitude according to the variation of stator exit pressure is very small.

A projectile that passes through a shock wave experiences drastic changes in the aerodynamic forces. These sudden changes in the forces are attributed to the wave structures produced by the projectile-shock wave interaction. A computational study using moving grid method is performed to analyze the effect of the projectile-shock wave interaction. Cylindrical and conical projectiles have been employed to study such interactions. This sort of unsteady interaction normally takes place in overtaking blast flow fields. It is found that the overall effect of overtaking a blast wave on the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics is hardly affected by the projectile configurations. However, it is noticed that the projectile configurations do affect the unsteady flow structures and hence the drag coefficient for the conical projectile shows considerable variation from that of the cylindrical projectile. The projectile aerodynamic characteristics, when it interacts with the secondary shock wave, are analyzed. It is also observed that the change in the characteristics of the secondary shock wave during the interaction is different for different projectile configurations.
A critical issue in the field of the rotor aerodynamics is the treatment of the wake. The wake is of primary importance in determining overall aerodynamic behavior, especially, a wind turbine blade includes the unsteady airloads problem. In this study, the wake generated by blades are depicted by a free wake model to analyse unsteady loading on blade and a new free wake model named Finite Vortex Element(FVE hereafter) is devised in order to include a wake-tower interaction. In this new free wake model, blade-wake-tower interaction is described by cutting a vortex filament when the filament collides with a tower. This FVE model is compared with a conventional free wake model and verified by a comparison with NRELand SNU wind tunnel model. A comparison with NREL and SNU data shows validity and effectiveness of devised FVE free wake model and an efficient.
In the present study, numerical unsteady simulations of the NREL Phase VI wind turbine in downwind operation conditions were conducted to investigate rotor-tower interaction. The calculations were performed using an unstructured mesh, incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes flow solver. To capture the unsteady effects associated with the tower shadow between the rotor blades and the tower, the wind turbine was modelled including the rotor, tower, hub, and nacelle. The present results generally showed good agreements with available experimental data. At the lowest wind speed, the pressure distribution was characterized by a complete collapse of the suction peak on the blade when the blade passes through the tower wake. It was found that unsteady effects play a significant role in the response of the blades.
The characteristic of unsteady flowfields on gas turbine, particularly on a rotor blade surface has been numerically investigated. The unsteady flow in a rotor blade passage as a result of wake/blade interaction is modeled by the inviscid flow approach, and solved by Euler equations using a time accurate marching scheme. Unsteady flow in the blade passage is induced by periodically moving a wake model across the passage inlet. The wake model used in this study is the Gaussian wate model in which the wake flow is assumed to be parallel with uniform static pressure and uniform relative total enthalpy. Numerical results show that for the case of Ps/Pr=1.5, the velocity and pressure distribution on the blade surfaces have much more complex profiles than for the case of Ps/Pr=1.0.

A three-dimensional parallel Euler flow solver has been developed for the simulation of unsteady rotor-fuselage interaction aerodynamics on unstructured meshes. In order to handle the relative motion between the rotor and the fuselage, the flow field was divided into two zones, a moving zone rotating with the blades and a stationary zone containing the fuselage. A sliding mesh algorithm was developed for the convection of the flow variables across the cutting boundary between the two zones. A quasi-unsteady mesh adaptation technique was adopted to enhance the spatial accuracy of the solution and to better resolve the wake. A low Mach number pre-conditioning method was implemented to relieve the numerical difficulty associated with the low-speed forward flight. Validations were made by simulating the flows around the Georgia Tech configuration and the ROBIN fuselage. It was shown that the present method is efficient and robust for the prediction of complicated unsteady rotor-fuselage aerodynamic interaction phenomena.
Effects of the reduced frequency of upstream wake on downstream unsteady boundary layer flow were simulated by using a Wavier-Stokes code. The Wavier-Stokes code is based on an unstructured finite volume method and uses a low Reynolds number turbulence model to close the momentum equations. The geometry used in this paper is the MIT flapping foil experimental set-up and the reduced frequency of the upstream wake is varied in the range of 0.91 to 10.86 to study its effect on the unsteady boundary layer flow. Numerical solutions show that they can be divided into two categories. One is so called the low frequency solution, and behaves quite similar to a Stokes layer. Its characteristics is found to be quite similar to those due to either a temporal or spatial wave. The low frequency solutions are observed clearly when the reduced frequency is smaller than 3.26. The other one is the high frequency solution. It is observed for the reduced frequency larger than 7.24. It shows a sudden shift of the phase angle of the unsteady velocity around the edge of the boundary layer. The shift of phase angle is about 180 degree, and leads to separation of the boundary layer flow from corresponding outer flow. The high frequency solution shows the characteristics of a temporal wave whose wave length is half of the upstream frequency. This characteristics of the high frequency solution is found to be caused by the strong interaction between unsteady vortices. This strong interaction also leads to destroy of the upstream wake strips inside the viscous sublayer as well as the buffer layer.
Most of the previous works on numerical analysis of galloping of transmission lines are generally based on the quasisteady theory. However, some wind tunnel tests of the rectangular section or hangers of suspension bridges have shown that the galloping phenomenon has a strong unsteady characteristic and the test results are quite different from the quasi-steady calculation results. Therefore, it is necessary to check the applicability of the quasi-static theory in galloping analysis of the ice-covered transmission line. Although some limited unsteady simulation researches have been conducted on the variation of parameters such as aerodynamic damping, aerodynamic coefficients with wind speed or wind attack angle, there is a need to investigate the numerical simulation of unsteady galloping of two-dimensional iced transmission line with comparison to wind tunnel test results. In this paper, it is proposed to conduct a two dimensional (2-D) unsteady numerical analysis of ice-covered transmission line galloping. First, wind tunnel tests of a typical crescent-shapes iced conductor are conducted firstly to check the subsequent quasisteady and unsteady numerical analysis results. Then, a numerical simulation model consistent with the aeroelastic model in the wind tunnel test is established. The weak coupling methodology is used to consider the fluid-structure interaction in investigating a two-dimension numerical simulation of unsteady galloping of the iced conductor. First, the flow field is simulated to obtain the pressure and velocity distribution of the flow field. The fluid action on the iced conduct at the coupling interface is treated as an external load to the conductor. Then, the movement of the conduct is analyzed separately. The software ANSYS FLUENT is employed and redeveloped to numerically analyze the model responses based on fluid-structure interaction theory. The numerical simulation results of unsteady galloping of the iced conduct are compared with the measured responses of wind tunnel tests and the numerical results by the conventional quasi-steady theory, respectively.

This study is to investigate the aerodynamic effects of the Rotor-Fuselage Interactions in forward flight, and is conducted by using an improved time-marching free-wake panel method. To resolve the instability caused by the close proximity of the wake to the blade surface, the field velocity approach is added to the prior unsteady panel code. This modified method is applied to the ROBIN(ROtor Body Interaction) problem, which had been conducted experimentally in NASA. The calculated results, pressure distribution on fuselage surface and induced inflow ratio without and with the rotor, are compared with the experimental results. The developed code shows not only very accurate prediction of the aerodynamic characteristics for the rotor-fuselage interaction problem but also the rotor wake development.
