The flight vehicles have cavities such as wheel wells and bomb bays. The flow around a cavity is characterized as unsteady flow because of the formation and dissipation of vortices due to the interaction between the freestream shear layer and cavity internal flow, the generation of shock and expansion waves. Resonance phenomena can damage the structures around the cavity and negatively affect aerodynamic performance and stability. In the present study, numerical analysis was performed for cavity flows by the unsteady compressible three dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with Wilcox's ${\kappa}\;-\;{\omega}$ turbulence model. The cavity has the aspect ratios of 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 for two-dimensional case, same aspect ratios with the W/D ratio of 2 for three-dimensional case. The Mach and Reynolds numbers are 0.53 and 1,600,000 respectively. The flow field is observed to oscillate in the "shear layer mode" with a feedback mechanism. Based on the SPL(Sound Pressure Level) analysis of the pressure variation at the cavity trailing edge, the dominant frequency was analyzed and compared with the results of Rossiter's formula. The MPI(Message Passing Interface) parallelized code was used for calculations by PC-cluster.

The Wells turbine has hysteresis characteristics in a reciprocating flow. In this paper, in order to understand unsteady flow characteristics of the Wells turbine, a sinusoidal flow condition is simulated. The flow conditions and hysteresis characteristics, including blade thickness, are investigated over a period of time. The pressure distributions along the blade surface are investigated at mid-span to clarify the cause of the hysteresis. The result has shown that the hysteresis characteristics become more pronounced as blade thickness becomes larger. The occurrence of these characteristics depends on the varying behavior of wakes between an accelerating flow and a develerating flow.
Most of the previous works on numerical analysis of galloping of transmission lines are generally based on the quasisteady theory. However, some wind tunnel tests of the rectangular section or hangers of suspension bridges have shown that the galloping phenomenon has a strong unsteady characteristic and the test results are quite different from the quasi-steady calculation results. Therefore, it is necessary to check the applicability of the quasi-static theory in galloping analysis of the ice-covered transmission line. Although some limited unsteady simulation researches have been conducted on the variation of parameters such as aerodynamic damping, aerodynamic coefficients with wind speed or wind attack angle, there is a need to investigate the numerical simulation of unsteady galloping of two-dimensional iced transmission line with comparison to wind tunnel test results. In this paper, it is proposed to conduct a two dimensional (2-D) unsteady numerical analysis of ice-covered transmission line galloping. First, wind tunnel tests of a typical crescent-shapes iced conductor are conducted firstly to check the subsequent quasisteady and unsteady numerical analysis results. Then, a numerical simulation model consistent with the aeroelastic model in the wind tunnel test is established. The weak coupling methodology is used to consider the fluid-structure interaction in investigating a two-dimension numerical simulation of unsteady galloping of the iced conductor. First, the flow field is simulated to obtain the pressure and velocity distribution of the flow field. The fluid action on the iced conduct at the coupling interface is treated as an external load to the conductor. Then, the movement of the conduct is analyzed separately. The software ANSYS FLUENT is employed and redeveloped to numerically analyze the model responses based on fluid-structure interaction theory. The numerical simulation results of unsteady galloping of the iced conduct are compared with the measured responses of wind tunnel tests and the numerical results by the conventional quasi-steady theory, respectively.
An unstructured overset mesh method has been developed for the simulation of unsteady viscous flow fields around multiple bodies in relative motion. For this purpose, a robust and fast search technique is proposed for both triangle and high-aspect quadrilateral cell elements. The interpolation boundary is defined for data communication between grid systems and an interpolation method is suggested for viscous and inviscid cell elements. This method has been applied to calculate the flow fields around 2-D airfoil including relative motion. Validation were made by comparing the predicted results with those of experiments or other researcher's numerical results. It was demonstrated that the present method is efficient and robust for the prediction of unsteady time-accurate flow fields involving multiple bodies in relative motion.
The arteries are very important in cardiovascular system and easily adapt to varying flow and pressure conditions by enlarging or shrinking to meet the given hemodynamic demands. The blood flow in arteries is dominated by unsteady flow phenomena due to heart beating. In certain circumstances, however, unusual hemodynamic conditions cause an abnormal biological response and often induce circulatory diseases such as atherosclerosis, thrombosis and inflammation. Therefore quantitative analysis of the unsteady pulsatile flow characteristics in the arterial blood vessels plays important roles in diagnosing these circulatory diseases. In order to verify the hemodynamic characteristics, in-vivo measurements of blood flow inside the extraembryonic arterial bifurcation cascade of chicken embryo were carried out using a micro-PIV technique. To analyze the unsteady pulsatile flow temporally, the (low images of RBCs were obtained using a high-speed CMOS camera at 250fps with a spatial resolution of $30{\mu}m\times30{\mu}m$ in the whole blood vessels. In this study, the unusual flow conditions such as flow separation or secondary flow were not observed in the arterial bifurcations. However, the vorticity has large values in the inner side of curvature of vessels. In addition, the mean velocity in the arterial blood vessel was decreased and pulsating frequency obtained by FFT analysis of velocity data extracted in front of the each bifurcation was also decreased as the bifurcation cascaded.
The current paper focuses the analysis of leakage detection in water pipeline systems by means of the transient method. In order to obtain essential data for evaluation the existing methodology, an extensive experimental process has been carried out in a single pipeline system, Several experimental tests were performed with and without a leakage in the system. Using the unsteady friction and improved unsteady friction factors gives reasonable match between the computed and measured results on the condition of the flow situations presented in the paper. The transient method attempts to estimate the leakage in water pipelines using observed pressure data collected during transient events on the system.

Modifying effects of the rectangular forward step for suppressing the unsteady pressure fluctuation during interaction between the upstream vortical flow and the edge are studied numerically. The vertical flow is modeled by a point vortex, and the unsteady pressure coefficient is obtained from the velocity and the potential fields. To investigate the effects of the edge shape the rectangular forward step is chamfered wish various angles. Calculation shows that the pressure peaks become decreased by increasing the vortex height as well as the chamfering angle. The pressure amplitudes are very sensitive to the change of the initial vertex height and its strength. From this study we can find out that the chamfered edge has two effects; the one is that it suppresses the pressure amplitude generated from the edge, and the other is that it decreases the time variation of unsteady pressure fluctuation. These modifying concepts can be applied to attenuate the self-sustained oscillation mechanism at the open cavity flow.

Nonlinear flow-induced vibration characteristics of a generic missile wing (or control surface) are investigated in this study. The wing model has freeplay structural nonlinearity at its pitch axis. Nonlinear aerodynamic flows with unsteady shock waves are considered in the transonic flow region. To practically consider the effects of freeplay structural nonlinearity, the fictitious mass method (FMM) is applied to structural vibration analysis based on a finite element method (FEM). A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique is used for computing the nonlinear unsteady aerodynamics of all-movable wings. The aerodynamic analysis is based on the efficient transonic small-disturbance aerodynamic equations of motion using the potential-flow theory. To solve the nonlinear aeroelastic governing equations including the freeplay effect, a modal-based computational structural dynamic (CSD) analysis technique based on fictitious mass method (FMM) is used in time-domain. In addition, CSD and unsteady CFD techniques are simultaneously coupled to give accurate computational results. Various aeroelastic computations have been performed for a generic missile wing model. Linear and nonlinear aeroelastic computations have been conducted and the characteristics of flow-induced vibration are introduced.
Three-dimensional and unsteady flow analysis is a practical target of high performance computation. As recently advances of computers, a numerical prediction by the large eddy simulation (LES) are introduced and evaluated for various engineering problems. Its advanced methods for the complex turbulent flows are discussed by several examples applied for aerodynamic designs, analysis of fluid flow mechanisms and their interaction to complex phenomena. These results of time-dependent and three-dimensional phenomena are visualized by interactive graphics and animations.

The unsteady flow in three-dimensional cubic cavity with narrow channel at upper region is investigated experimentally for three kinds of Reynolds number, 1*10/sup 4/, 3*10/sup 4/ and 5*10/sup 4/ based on the cavity width and cavity inlet mean flow velocity. Instant velocity vectors are obtained simultaneously at whole field by PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry). Wall pressure distributions are estimated using Poisson equation from the velocity data. Results of PIV reveal that severe unsteady flow fluctuation within the cavity are remarkable at all Reynolds numbers and sheared mixing layer phenomena are also found at the region where inlet driving flow is collided with the clock-wise rotating main primary vortex. Instant velocity profiles reveal that deformed forced vortex formation is observed throughout the entire region and spanwise kinetic energy migration is conspicuous.
