This study was carried to investigate the biodegradability of phenol in the wastewater with the two sludge blanket-packed bed reactor in series. Each reactor had a dimension of 0.09 m i.d. and 1.5 m height and consisted of two regions. The lower region was a sludge blanket of 0.5 m height and the upper region was a packed-bed of 1 m height. The packed bed region was charged with ceramic raschig rings of 10 mm i.d., 15 mm o.d. and 20 mm length. The reactors were operated at 35$\circ$C and the hydraulic retention time(HRT) was maintained 24 hours. The synthetic wastewater composed of glucose and phenol as major components was fed into the reactor in a continuous mode with incereasing phenol concentration. In addition, the nutrient trace metals($Na^+, Mg^{2+}, Ca^{2+}, PO_4^{3-}, NH_4^+, Co^{2+}, Fe^{2+}$ etc.) were added for growing anaerobes. The phenol concentration of the effluent, the overall gas production, the composition of product gas, the efficiency of COD reduction and the duration of acclimation period were measured to determine the performance of the anaerobic wastewater treatment system as the phenol concentration of the influent was increased from 600 to 2400 mg//l. Successfully stable biodegradation of phenol could be achieved with the anaerobic treatment system from 600 to 1, 800 mg/l of the influent phenol concentration. The upper level of influent phenol loading was high enough to meet most of the practical requirement. The duration of acclimation increased with the phenol loading. At steady state of the influent phenol concentration of 1800 mg/l, the treatment performance indicated the phenol reduction efficiency of 99%, the COD reduction efficiency of 99% and the gas production rate of 37 l/day. At the influent phenol concentration of 2400 mg/l, however, the operation of the treatment system was noted unstable. While the concentration of methane in biogas decreased with increasing the influent phenol loading, the carbon dioxide was increased. However, the concentration of hydrogen was varied negligibly. The concentration of methane was high enough to be used as a fuel. As a result, it is suggested that anaerobic phenol wastewater treament was economical in the sense of energy recovery and wastewater treatment.

Purpose: Recently, the American Heart Association recommended that routine cervical spine protection in submerged patients was not necessary, except in high-energy injury situations. However, until now, this recommendation has few supportive studies and literatures. This retrospective study was performed to demonstrate the risk of cervical spine injury in patients who had been submerged in a river. Methods: Seventy-nine submerged patients who visited St. Mary's Hospital between January 2000 and December 2005 were included in this retrospective study. We investigated and analyzed the victim's age, sex, activity on submersion, mental status and level of severity at admission, prognosis at discharge, associated injuries, and risk group by using the medical records and cervical spine lateral images. According to the activity on submersion, victims were classified into three groups: high risk, low risk, and unknown risk. The reports of radiologic studies were classified into unstable fracture, stable fracture, sprain, degenerative change, and normal. Results: The patients' mean age was 36.8 yrs, and 54% were males. Of the 79 patients, adult and adolescent populations (80%) were dominant. Jumping from a high bridge (48%) was the most common activity on submersion and accounted for 52% of the high-risk group. The Glasgow coma scale at admission and the cerebral performance scale at discharge showed bimodal patterns. The results of the radiologic studies showed one stable fracture, one suspicious stable fracture, and 18 sprains. The incidence of cervical spine fracture in submerged patients was 2.5% in our study. The incidence of cervical spine injury was higher in the high-risk group than it was in the low-risk group, especially in the jumping-from-high-bridge subgroup; however this observation was not statistically significant. No other factors had any significant effect on the incidence of cervical spine injury. Conclusion: Our study showed that even submerged patients in the high risk group had a low incidence of cervical spine fracture and that the prognosis of a patient did not seem to be influenced by the cervical spine fracture itself.

In a haptic system, a virtual wall is modeled as a virtual spring. The larger the stiffness of the virtual spring is, the more improved the reality of the virtual wall is, but the more unstable the haptic system becomes. This paper shows how to increase the stiffness of the virtual spring while the stability of the haptic system is guaranteed and shows the effects of a mass (Md) and a damper (Bd) of a haptic device on the stability when first-order hold method is applied and a virtual wall is modeled as a virtual spring (Kw). The simulation results show the boundary of the virtual spring is proportional to the square root of the mass (Md) and the damper (Bd) while maintaining the stability. The relation among the virtual spring (Kw), the mass (Md) and the damper (Bd) of the haptic device, and sampling time (T) is inferred as $K_w{\leq}{1.611M_d}^{0.50}{B_d}^{0.50}T^{-1.51}$, by using the simulation results. The maximum available stiffness of the virtual spring in first-order hold method is larger than in zero-order hold method. So the reality of the virtual wall can be improved.

In this study, the impact on the circulating water system has been analyzed due to an installation of helical turbine to develop hydro-kinetic energy at the discharge channel of the power plant. Numerical simulations of velocity and pressure variations have been performed when one set of $3.6\;m\;{\times}\;1.5\;m$ sized helical turbine is installed at the outlet of discharge culvert. In case of mean sea level, change of downstream water surface elevation does not affect upstream elevation of the weir because its propagation is blocked by the seal well weir. However in case of highest high water level, change of downstream elevation affects upstream elevation because flow pattern in discharge culvert becomes the full pipe flow with submerged weir. Although an unstable pressure change occurs in upstream of the weir during the intial 10 minutes after beginning of the discharge, it becomes stable after that time. In addition, a rise of water surface elevation by 0.2 m is observed but it is concluded that it hardly affects the safety of circulating water pump (CWP) although its required power is increased more or less. Therefore, the increase of required power of CWP needs to be considered for evaluation of the helical turbine applicability.

The solubilities of ethyl bromide in aniline and o-chloroaniline have been measured at 5, 15$^{\circ}$ and 25$^{\circ}$C in the presence and the absence of gallium bromide. When gallium bromide does not exist in the system, the solubility of ethyl bromide in o-chloroaniline is greater than in aniline, indicating a stronger interaction of ethyl bromide with o-chloroaniline than that with aniline. It could be thought that ethyl bromide forms unstable complex with gallium bromide in the presence of gallium bromide in the system. This complex has been assumed in various ways and evaluated, that instability constant (K value) is relatively constancy under the assumption of 1 : 1 complex, $C_2H_5Br{\cdot}GaBr_3$. Therefore, the complex forms the following equilibrium in the solution: $C_2H_5Br{\cdot}GaBr_3\;{\rightleftharpoons}\;C_2H_5Br +1/2Ga_2Br_6$ The instability of the complex of ethyl bromide with gallium bromide is compared with similar complexes of gallium bromide with methyl bromide. The changes of enthalpy, free energy and entropy fcor the dissociation of the complex are also calculated.

Three hundreds thirty two bacterial colonies which were able to degrade crude oil were isolated from soil samples that were contaminated with oil in Daejeon area. Among them, one bacterial strain was selected for this study based on its higher oil degrading ability, and this selected bacterial strain was identified as Acinetobactor sp. B2 through physiological-biochemical tests and analysis of its 16S rRNA sequence. Acinetobactor sp. B2 was able to utilize various carbohydrates but did not utilize trehalose and mannitol as a sole carbon source. Acinetobactor sp. B2 showed a weak resistance to antibiotics such as kanamycin, streptomycin, tetracycline and spectinomycin, but showed a high resistance up to mg/ml unit to heavy metals such as Ba, Li, Mn, AI, Cr and Pb. The optimal growth temperature of Acinetobactor sp. B2 was $30^{\circ}C.$ The lipase produced by Acinetobactor sp. B2 was purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation, DEAE-Toyopearl 650M ion exchange chromatography and Sephadex gel filtration chromatography. Its molecular mass was about 60 kDa and condition for the optimal activity was observed at $40^{\circ}C$ and pH 10, respectively. The activation energy of lipase for the hydrolysis of pnitrophenyl palmitate was 2.7 kcal/mol in the temperature range of 4 to $37^{\circ}C,$ and the enzyme was unstable at the temperature higher than $60^{\circ}C.$ The Michaelis constant $(K_m)\;and\;V_{max}$ for p-nitrophenyl palmitate were 21.8 uM and $270.3\;{\mu}M\;min^{-1}mg^{-1},$ respectively. This enzyme was strongly inhibited by 10 mM $Cd^{2+},\;Co^{2+},\;Fe^{2+},\;Hg^{2+},$ EDTA and 2-Mercaptoethalol.
Since weathering weakens the rock fabric and exaggerates any structural weakness, it affects mechanical properties as well as physical and chemical properties of rock. Weathering leads to a decrease in density, strength, friction angle and cohesion, and subsequently it affects negatively on the stability of rock slope. The purpose of the study is to investigate the changes of the rock slope stability caused by discontinuities which have different weathering grades. For that, the discontinuity samples which are divided into two different weathering grades are obtained from the field and tested their mechanical properties such as JCS, JRC and residual friction angle. In order to evaluate the effects on the stability of slope due to weathering, the deterministic analysis is carried out. That is, the factors of safety for planar failure are calculated for rock masses which have two different weathering grades, such as fresh and weathered rock mass. However, since the JRC and friction angle values are widely scattered and the deterministic analysis cannot consider the variation, the factors of safety cannot represent properly the stability of the rock slope. Therefore, the probabilistic analysis has been used to consider the scattered values. In the deterministic analysis, the factors of safety for the fresh discontinuity and weathered discontinuity are 1.25 and 1.0, respectively. The results indicate the fresh discontinuities are stable for planar failure and the weathered discontinuities are marginally stable. However, the probabilities of failure for the fresh discontinuity and weathered discontinuity are 25.6% and 45.9%, respectively. This shows that both discontinuities are analyzed as unstable in the probabilistic analysis.
Changes of color intensity and components during browning reaction of water extracts from white tail ginseng were investigated. Temperature dependence was described by the Arrhenius relationship with an activation energy of 16kcal/mole. Temperature sensitivities$(Q_{10}\;value)$ for water extracts of ginseng was 1.90 between $70^{\circ}C\;and\;80^{\circ}C$, 1.57 between $80^{\circ}C\;and\;90^{\circ}C$ and 1.46 between $90^{\circ}C\;and\;100^{\circ}C$. pH value of the solution treated at $90^{\circ}C\;and\;100^{\circ}C$ slightly increased with an increase in reaction time. Among ginseng saponins ginsenoside-Re was most unstable against heat-treatment, white diol group saponins were more stable against heat-treatment. Hydrogen donating activity (reducing activity for ${\alpha},\;{\alpha}'-diphenyl-{\beta}-picrylhydrazyl$) and 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid(DNS) positive substances of browning reaction products increased in proportion to the length of browning reaction time and temperature, whereas folin positive substances decreased by heat-denaturation of ginseng protein at initial reaction time and then increased thereafter.
Storage ecosystems of rough rice, brown rice and polished rice were analyzed form Feb. 1987 to Nov. 1988 to investigate structures and ecological successions in the arthropod communities as well as changes in energy of the systems. The changes in temperature of stored rice showed high degree dependence on the temperature of storage room with time lag of about four weeks. Moisture content of rough rice, brown rice and polished rice during the period were in the range of 12.7$\pm$0.4, 13.1$\pm$0.4 and 13.5$\pm$0.3%, respectively. The arthropod communities in rough rice, brown rice and polished rice were qualitatively and quantitatively different. In rough rice, dominant species changed from Leptinotus reticulatus Endlein to Liposcelisentomophilus Endlein, while in brown rice from Pyralis farinalis L. to Sitophilus oryze (L.), unidentified parasitic wasps, Anisopteromalus calandrae Howard and Tribolium castaneum Herbst and finally to S. oryzae. In polished rice, the arthropod community showed an ecological succession similar to that in brown rice except for a transient dominance of two psocidspecies. Thearthropod community in rough rice was rather simple and unstable in comparison with those in brown rice and polished rice. The 1000 kernel weight of brown rice decreased slightly during the period when the arthropods were active (summer season), while that of rough rice and polished rice remained at the similar level. However, the ash content per unit volume of brown rice as well as rough rice and polished rice showed no increase during the period.
