The fruit and seeds of Butea monosperma (Lam) Kuntze (Fabaceae) are useful in piles, anthelmintic, eye diseases, and inflammation in the Indian system of medicine. Hence, we have evaluated the anti-inflammatory activity of the fixed oil, mixed fatty acids, and unsaponifiable matter of B. monosperma against carrageenan-induced paw oedema and cotton pellet-induced granuloma in rats. The fixed oil, mixed fatty acids, and unsaponifiable matter of the oil exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity on the tested experimental animal models. The unsaponifiable matter of the oil produced higher protection compared to fixed oil and mixed fatty acids. Phytochemical analysis of the fixed oil revealed the presence of steroids and terpenoids while unsaponifiable matter of the oil showed the presence of ${\beta}-sitosterol$. Also, four fatty acids were identified in the fixed oil by gas liquid chromatography. The anti-inflammatory activity of the fixed oil may be due to unsaponifiable matter or combination of unsaponifiable matter and mixed fatty acids.
Purpose: Mee (Madhuca longifolia) is an economically important tree growing throughout Sri Lanka. Its importance is mainly attributed to its oil with high nutritional and medicinal values. However, an inefficient extraction method limits its use. This study revealed the possibility of extracting oil from mee seeds by using a screw-type oil expeller. Methods: A popular screw-type oil expeller was used in the experiment. Extract bar clearance and speeds of the main spiral shaft were altered to increase the oil expelling efficiency of the machine. The quality of refined oil at the optimum oil yield was determined by measuring the refractive index, saponification value, iodine value, unsaponifiable matter, free fatty acid, and specific gravity. Results: An optimum yield of 35% oil was obtained when the machine capacity was 30 kg/h and energy consumption was 0.13 kWh/kg. This optimum machine condition was observed at an extract bar clearance of 0.5 mm and a main spiral shaft speed of 90 rpm. The refractive index, saponification value, iodine value, unsaponifiable matter, free fatty acid, and specific gravity of the oil were 1.4, 203, 59, 3.5%, 0.2%, and 0.907 g/cm3 respectively. Color of the mee oil was closer to yellow, which is revealed by the lightness value (L) of 24.93 and positive value (b) of 11.81. Conclusion: The screw-type oil expeller can be used for economically extracting mee oil on a commercial scale.
Alcoholic extract of Spathodea campanulata P. aerial parts, and two of the isolated fractions from celite column showed strong antioxidant activity (92, 94 & 89% RSA, Radical Scavenging Activity). Phytochemical investigation of chloroform/EtOAc faction of this column led to the isolation of phenolic acids, caffiec acid (1), and ferulic acid (2), fraction EtOAc/MeOH on further fractionation afforded 3 Flavonoids, kampferol 3-O-glucoside (3), quercetin 3-methyl ether (4) and 8-methoxy kampferol 3-O-glucoside (5). The isolated constituents were identified by co chromatography with authentic samples, TLC, PC., UV, MS and $^1H-NMR$. Also the lipoidal matter of the plant was studied. The unsaponifiable matter was found to be mixture of hydrocarbons from $(C_{14}-C_{28})$, cholesterol, campasterol, stigmasterol, and ${\alpha}-amyrin$. Fatty acid methyl esters were found to contain 12 fatty acids. The fatty acids containing $C_{18}$ farmed ca.65% of the total mixture.
four varieties of ground nut (Arechis hypogea) were collected from different areas of Pakistan (Tillagang, Gujar khan, Hanoi and Pipplan) from Punjab province. The oils were extracted for the evaluation of lipid. Physico-chemical values of oils were determined like refractive index, peroxide value, unsaponifiable matter, acid value, iodine value, free fatty acid and ester value. The lipid profile as indicated by GLC showed that Palmitic acid ranged from 8.2-8.8%, proportions of oleic acid and linoleic acid varied from 57.8-59.87% and 22.5-24.1% respectively. Gujar khan variety of peanut has higher % age of oil (56.79). The higher yield of oil in this variety is not at the cost of any nutritional quality of peanut oil.
An investigation has been performed to find an effective separation method of steriols and tocopherols from the deodorized condensates of vegetable oils. Simple heating of the starting mixture isolated the oil layer from water, and the former was collected. It was then methyl esterified followed by a distillation for the removal of fatty acid. The ensuing step was to saponify the residue. The unsaponifiable matter was extracted by both methanol and concentrated. The sterol was crystallized by cooling such concentrated solution. To obtain tocopherol, the mother liquor was first dissolved in methanol. Cooling this solution to $-20^{\circ}C$ trapped fatty acid which was filtered out. The filtrate was then treated with ion exchange resin.

Rice bran contains high amounts of fiber and various phytochemicals, including vitamin E, ${\gamma}$-oryzanol, and phenolic acids. The oxidative stabilities of corn oil added with three rice bran extracts from two rice cultivars (Dasan 1 and Ilpum) were evaluated. The three rice bran extracts were unsaponifiable matter of rice bran (USM), methanolic extract of rice bran oil (MEO), and methanolic extract of defatted rice bran (MEDR). Each sample was stored at $50^{\circ}C$ for 24 days. Oxidation of these samples was determined every 3 days by measuring the peroxide value (POV) and conjugated diene value (CDV). Vitamin E content was analyzed on day 0 and day 24. The results show that the POV and CDV values of samples increased gradually during the storage period. The order of oxidative stability was shown as BHT> MEDR> MEO> USM> control, regardless of cultivars. In the case of vitamin E, ${\alpha}$-T, ${\gamma}$-T, ${\alpha}$-T3, and ${\gamma}$-T3 contents decreased by 89%, 31%, 83%, and 32% after storage for 24 days, respectively. In conclusion, MEDR showed higher oxidative stability and may have potential as a source of natural antioxidants in the oil industry.

The objective of this study was to determine the antioxidant activities of rice bran extracts by three different extraction methods. Rice bran was extracted by solvent extraction, saponification extraction, and supercritical fluid extraction. The antioxidant activities of the rice bran extracts were determined based on ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities, reducing power, and lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity. The unsaponifiable matter (USM) extracted by the saponification method showed higher ABTS (671.7 mg Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC)/g) and DPPH (330.7 mg TEAC/g) radical scavenging activities as well as reducing power ($A_{700}=1.14$) than those of the solvent extract (ME) and supercritical fluid extract (SFE). Inhibitory effect on lipid peroxidation was higher in USM (68.7%) and SFE (75.4%) compared to ME (47.8%). USM indicated relatively higher antioxidant activities compared with those of SFE and ME. These results show that the saponification method for extraction of USM from rice bran extracted was the most effective method for enhancement of antioxidant activity. In addition, these extracts from rice bran could be used as functional ingredients in the food industry.
Investigation of M. peregrina aerial parts revealed the isolation and identification of 4-flavonoidal compounds, quercetin, quercetin-3-0-rutinoside (rutin), chrysoeriol-7-0-rhamnoside 6,8,3',5'-tetramethoxy apigenin. The compounds were identified by TLC, PC, MS, and $H^1-NMR$. The fatty acids and unsaponifiable matter were studied. The $LD_{50}$ for M. peregrina was 113.4 mg/100g b.wt. Repeated intraperitoneal injection of 1/20 and 1/10 $LD_{50}$ (5.67 mg and 11.34 mg/100g b.wt.) of defatted alcoholic of M. peregrina for 30 days induced significant decrease in serum glucose, liver enzymes and lipid components. M. peregrina administered i.p., 30min prior to carrageenan at the above doses significantly inhibited the rat paw oedema response, In acute pain models, namely, the acetic acid-induced writing and hot-plate assay, M. peregrina exhibited marked analgesic properties. In addition, M. peregrina administered at time of indomethacin injection inhibited the development of gastric lesions in rats.
Methods for the determination of sterols in sesame oils were studied. The sesame oils were saponified and the sterols isolated from the unsaponifiable matter by Florisil column chromatography, and the individual components were determined by means of gas chromatography. Campesterol, ${\beta}-sitosterol$, stigmasterol were found in sesame oil including unknown Ⅰ and Ⅱ. The use of SE-30 gas chromatographic column allows the slow elution, duplication of peaks and relatively low reproducibility, therefore, 3% OV-17 was suitable for the sterol analysis. The result of this study showed that contents of sterols in sesame oil were campesterol 8.4%, stigmasterol 4.5%, ${\beta}-sitosterol$ 33.9% and others 53.0% involving 8.8% of unknown I and 44.3% of unknown Ⅱ. There has been no specific test available for identifying the sesame oil among common edible oils. But the ratio of sterols in sesame oils allowed the estimation of genuiness. The ratio of sterols vs. campesterol in genuine sesame oils were stigmasterol 0.3- 0.6, ${\beta}-sitosterol$ 3.0-3.8 and unknown Ⅱ 3.0, respectively. The 65 samples were composed of genuine sesame oil 40%, mixed rape seed oil 3%, cotton seed oil 1. 5% others were reused soybean oil or re-extracted oil.
The objectives of this study were to analyze the physiological and antimicrobial activities of wheat germ. The fatty acid components of the wheat germ included palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids. Furthermore, the acid value was 8.5, the peroxide value was 7.1, the iodine value was 126.8, the saponification value was 159.7, and the refractive index was 1.547. In the unsaponifiable matter, the total phenol concentration extracted by ethanol, along with physiological activity were 2.02% and 0.45%, respectively, and the amount of flavonoids and activity were 6.89% and 6.90%, respectively. The amount of flavonoids was larger than the phenol concentration in the wheat germ. In addition, the nitritescavenging ability of the wheat germ was lower than ascorbic acid but greater than BHT and tocopherol. The peroxide value in the linoleic acid changed over 5 days, presenting as 0.67, 22.70, 44.25, 5.81, and 91.17 meq/kg, and increases were also consistently shown as time passed for the ethanol extractions and unsaponifiable. Additional data showed that antimicrobial effects could not be detected in the wheat germ concentration or method of extraction.
