The hot deformation behaviour of particulate reinforced aluminium 6061 Al composite were investigated by hot compression tests in the temperature range from 623K to 823K with strain rate of 10$^{-3}$ ~5.0 S$^{-1}$ . The effect of reinforced particulate volume fraction, mean diameter on the high temperature flow stress has also been studied. Experimental results showed that the increase in the volume fraction of reinforcement contributed to the rising of yield stress, but the stress above the yield point appeared to be steady state at all volume fractions. The apparent activation energy for deformation was 290KJ/mo1 for unreinforced 6061 Al, 327KJ/mo1 for 6061 Al-20vo1.% SiC composite and 531KJ/mo1 for 6061 Al-20vo1.%A1$_2$O$_3$composite. It appeared that $Al_2$O$_3$reinforced composites was more difficult to hot deform.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the seismic performance of domestic unreinforced masonry(URM) buildings using nonlinear dynamic analysis. For that, the nonlinear hysteresis models suggested in the previous research were validated for the dynamic analysis. The results of the shaking table test were compared with the dynamic analysis results using the suggested nonlinear hysteresis models. As a result, the nonlinear hysteresis models were expected to be applicable to the dynamic analysis of URM buildings. Based on the models, the dynamic analysis of domestic URM buildings varying the number of stories and opening ratio was carried out. The analysis results showed that most of the domestic URM buildings were very vulnerable to design earthquake in Korea.
This study has observed that the dynamic behavior of Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) in low velocity impact varies with impact velocity. MMCs with 15 fiber volume percent were fabricated by using the squeeze casting method. The AC8A was used as the matrix, and the alumina and the carbon were used as reinforcements. The tensile and vibration tests conducted yielded the yielded the tensile stress and elastic modulus of MMCs The low pass filter and instrumented impact test machine was adopted to study dynamic behaviors of MMCs corresponding to impact velocity. Stable impact signals were obtained by using the low pass filter. Impact corresponding to impact velocity. Stable impact signals were obtained by using the low pass filter. Impact energy of unreinforced alloy and MM s increased as the impact velocity increased. The increase of crack propagation energy was especially prominent, but the dynamic toughness of each material did not change much. To show the relation between crack initiation energy and dynamic fracture toughness, a simple model was proposed by using the strain energy and stress distribution at notch. The model revealed that crack initiation energy is proportional to the square of dynamic fracture toughness and inversely proportional to elastic modulus.
Cyclic deformation and fatigue behavior of $Al/$Al_2O_3$ metal matrix composites and matrix alloy were studied. Hatigue strength Al/$Al_2O_3$ composites was about 210MPa, and that of Al matrix alloy was 170MPa. Most of the resultant displacement due to permanent plastic deformation occurred in less than the first 5% of fatigue life. In case of composites, decrease of cyclic displacement was smaller than that of matrix because the reinforcements acted as barriers to dislocation movement. Consequently, cyclic stress-displacement response curve can be considered to have these atages ; an initial few cycles of rapid hardening, followed by progressive hardening for most the fatigue life, and then just prior to failure, an instantaneous drop in stress carrying capability of the material due to multiple microcrack initiation, eventual coalescence of microcrack to form a macrocrack and then rapid macroscopic crack growth.

RC frames with unreinforced masonry infiledl walls are common in worldwide. Since infilled walls are normally considered as non-structural elements, their presence is often ignored by engineers. In this study, to improve the seismic performance of masonry walls, hexagonal block was developed and the influence of masonry infilled wall on the seismic performance of reinforced concrete(RC) frames that were designed in accordance with current code provisions without the consideration of earthquake loadings are investigated. Two 1/2 scale, single story, single bay, frame specimens were tested. The parameters investigated included that the strength of infilled wallls with respect to that of the lateral load history. The experimental results indicate that infilled walls can significantly improve the lateral stiffness and strength of RC frames. The lateral loads developed by the infilled frame specimen is higher than that of the bare frame. It also indicates that infilled walls can be potentially used to improve the performance of existing nonductile frames. For this purpose. methods should be developed to avoid irreparable damage and catastrophic failure.

Masonry structures have been used throughout the world for the construction of residential buildings. However, from a structural point of view, the masonry material is characterized by a very low tensile strength. Moreover, the bearing and shear capacity of masonry walls have been found to be vulnerable to earthquakes. In this study, to improve the seismic performance of masonry walls, hexagonal blocks were developed and six masonry walls made with hexagonal block were tested to failure under reversed cyclic lateral loading. This paper focuses on an experimental investigation of different types of wall with hexagonal blocks, i.e. walls with different hexagonal blocks and with different reinforcing bar arrangements, subjected to applied cyclic loads. The cracking, damage patterns and hysteretic feature were evaluated. Results from the hexagonal masonry wall were shown more damage reduction and less brittle failure in comparison to the existing rectangular masonry walls.
PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to compare the flexural strength of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and bis-acryl composite resin reinforced with polyethylene and glass fibers. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three groups of rectangular test specimens (n = 15) of each of the two resin/fiber reinforcement were prepared for flexural strength test and unreinforced group served as the control. Specimens were loaded in a universal testing machine until fracture. The mean flexural strengths (MPa) was compared by one way ANOVA test, followed by Scheffe analysis, using a significance level of 0.05. Flexural strength between fiber-reinforced resin groups were compared by independent samples t-test. RESULTS. For control groups, the flexural strength for PMMA (215.53 MPa) was significantly lower than for bis-acryl composite resin (240.09 MPa). Glass fiber reinforcement produced significantly higher flexural strength for both PMMA (267.01 MPa) and bis-acryl composite resin (305.65 MPa), but the polyethylene fibers showed no significant difference (PMMA resin-218.55 MPa and bis-acryl composite resin-241.66 MPa). Among the reinforced groups, silane impregnated glass fibers showed highest flexural strength for bis-acryl composite resin (305.65 MPa). CONCLUSION. Of two fiber reinforcement methods evaluated, glass fiber reinforcement for the PMMA resin and bis-acryl composite resin materials produced highest flexural strength. Clinical implications. On the basis of this in-vitro study, the use of glass and polyethylene fibers may be an effective way to reinforce provisional restorative resins. When esthetics and space are of concern, glass fiber seems to be the most appropriate method for reinforcing provisional restorative resins.
Currently, layered geogrid method (LGM) is the commonly practiced technique for reinforcement of slopes. In this paper the geogrid-box method (GBM) is introduced as a new approach for reinforcement of rock-soil slopes. To achieve the objectives of this study, a laboratory setup was designed and the slopes without reinforcements and reinforced with LGM and GBM were tested under the loading of a circular footing. The effect of vertical spacing between geogrid layers and box thickness on normalized bearing capacity and failure mechanism of slopes was investigated. A series of 3D finite element analysis were also performed using ABAQUS software to supplement the results of the model tests. The results indicated that the load-settlement behavior and the ultimate bearing capacity of footing can be significantly improved by the inclusion of reinforcing geogrid in the soil. It was found that for the slopes reinforced with GBM, the displacement contours are widely distributed in the rock-soil mass underneath the footing in greater width and depth than that in the reinforced slope with LGM, which in turn results in higher bearing capacity. It was also established that by reducing the thickness of geogrid-boxes, the distribution and depth of displacement contours increases and a longer failure surface is developed, which suggests the enhanced bearing capacity of the slope. Based on the studied designs, the ultimate bearing capacity of the GBM-reinforced slope was found to be 11.16% higher than that of the slope reinforced with LGM. The results also indicated that, reinforcement of rock-soil slopes using GBM causes an improvement in the ultimate bearing capacity as high as 24.8 times more than that of the unreinforced slope.
New composite membranes were manufactured by impregnating post-sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)s containing perfluorocyclobutane (PFCB) groups into porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) films. Two kinds of post-sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)s with two different monomer ratios (sulfonable biphenylene monomer : non-sulfonable sulfonyl monomer = 6 : 4, 4 : 6) were first prepared through three synthetic steps: synthesis of trifluorovinylether-terminated monomers, thermal cycloaddition polymerization and post-sulfonation using chlorosulfonic acid (CSA). The composite membranes were then prepared by adjusting the concentrations (5~20 wt%) of the resulting copolymers impregnated in the PTFE films. The water uptake, ion exchange capacity (IEC) and ion conductivity of the composite membranes were characterized and compared with their unreinforced dense membranes and Nafion. All the synthesized compounds, monomers and polymers were characterized by $^1H$-NMR, $^{19}F$-NMR and FT-IR and the composite membranes were observed with scanning electron micrographs (SEM).
The effect of fiber reinforcing materials on the fracture strength of composite resin was evaluated. Each ten composite resin bars reinforced by glassfiber[Fiber-Splint ML$^{(R)}$(Polydentia SA, Switzerland)], polyethylene fiber [Ribbond$^{(R)}$(Ribbond Inc., U.S.A.)] and polyaramid fiber[Kevlar$^{(R)}$(DuPont, U.S.A.)] were loaded under the 3-point compression technique. Another ten pure composite resin bars without reinforcement were used as a control group. Then mean fracture strength and standard deviation were calculated and a ANOVA and Scheffe test were used in statistics. The results were as follows: 1. Kevlar group showed the highest fracture strength as 175.5MPa (p<0.05). Fiber-Splint ML group showed the lowest fracture strength as 112.7MPa. 2. The mean value of fracture strength in Ribbond group was 136.4MPa, and that of unterated control group was 143.6MPa. No difference was found between the two groups. 3. Ribbond and Kevlar reinforcement groups showed a catastrophic failure, where complete separation of pieces occurs to a unseparated fracture pattern. The use of Kevlar reinforcement fibers with composite resin showed significant increase in the average load failure and the presence of the fibers did prevent the catastrophic crack propagation present in the unreinforced samples. The use of Ribbond reinforcement fibers with composite resin showed no significant increase in the average load failure. However, the presence of the fibers did prevent the catastrophic crack propagation. Because high strength of glassfiber are rapidly degraded on exposure to moisture and humidity. The use of Fiber-Splint ML reinforcement fibers with composite resin showed significant decrease in the average load failure and displayed catastrophic fractures.
