  • The specimens of three unrecorded triphorid snails, Mastonia millepunctata, Monophorus testaceus, and Obesula turricula were collected from Jeju-do, Korea and diagnostic characters were analysed. As a result, the family Triphoridae in Korea turned out to be 18 species revised species catalogue are listed.

  • Two species, Zaglyptus multicolor(Gravenhorst) and Zaglyptus semirufus Momoi, are newly recognized from South Korea. Zaglyptus iwatai (Uchida) has only been reported from South Korea to date. Diagnoses of two unrecorded species, illustrations of diagnostic characters and a key to species of this genus are provided.

Fissidens (Fissidentaceae, Bryophyta) species newly recorded in Korea

  • Here, 15 taxa of genus Fissidens Hedw. are reported as new to the moss flora of Korea: F. bryoides var. esquirolii, F. closteri subsp. kiusiuensis, F. crispus, F. curvatus, F. enervis, F. flabellulus, F. ganguleei, F. gracilifolius, F. gymnandrus, F. incurvus, F. longisetus, F. pusillus, F. takayukii, F. viridulus, and F. wichurae. The list of Fissidens in Korea, consisting of 26 taxa previously, is updated to 38 taxa by adding 15 taxa and excluding three taxa. Descriptions, taxonomic notes with diagnoses, in situ and microscopic photographs of the unrecorded species, and taxonomic keys of four sections belonging to the subgen. Fissidens are provided.

Taxonomic study of the genus Brachynervus Uchida (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae: Anomaloninae) from South Korea

  • Two unrecorded species, Brachynervus beijingensis and B. confusus are described from South Korea for the first time. A taxonomic study of the South Korean Brachynervus was initiated by Uchida (1955). Until now only one species, B. tsunekii, has been recorded from South Korea. In the study, we provide the diagnoses and photos of two unrecorded species of Brachynervus.

  • For investigation of the species diversity of the Genus Crepidotus in Korea and constructing a key to Korean Crepidotus species, a total of 65 specimens, collected from 18 locations from 1982 to 2002, were observed for morphological characters of carpophores and other features. All the specimens have been preserved in the herbarium of the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, R.D.A., Suwon, Korea. The specimens were identified according to the classification systems given by Hesler and Smith(1965), Nordstein(1990), Orton(1960), Pilat(1948), Senn-Irlet(1991, 1992, 1993) and Singer(1951, 1973, 1986). In this study, a total of 10 Crepidotus species were confirmed. Among them, Korean common names were designated to six unrecorded species as follows: C. uber, "끈적귀버섯"; C. hygrophanus, "곤약귀버섯"; C. latifolius, "꼬마무리귀버섯"; C. obscurus, "먼지귀버섯"; C. subverrucisporus, "분홍주름귀버섯"; and C. circinatus, "노란고리귀버섯". A key to 10 Crepidotus species has been constructed.

  • Nervilia nipponica Makino (Orchidaceae), a genus and species previously unrecorded for the Korean flora, was collected in the deciduous forests of Mt. Halla, Jeju Island. This species was known to be distributed mainly from tropical to subtropical regions of Taiwan and Japan. Genus Nervilia is distinguished from other genera of tribe Nervilieae (Orchidaceae) by having only a single, plicate leaf which develops and senesces before flowering shoots appear, stems unbranched, two pollinia, and sometimes lacking a viscidium.

New records of the genus Cyanobium and Cyanobium gracile (Synechococcales, Cyanophyceae) in Korean freshwater

  • Cyanobium is a genus of picoprokaryotic cyanophytes, which includes species worldwide. The present study investigated the morphology, ultrastructure, and molecular phylogeny of the unrecorded genus Cyanobium Rippka & Cohen-Bazire 1983 and species Cyanobium gracile Rippka & Cohen-Bazire 1983. A C. gracile culture from a freshwater sample collected from the Adongji pond was established by single-cell isolation. Morphological data were analyzed using light and transmission electron microscopy. C. gracile lives as solitary cells without gelatinous envelopes and is ovate, oval, or shortly rod-shaped. Thylakoids are laid along the cell walls, with three thylakoid membranes parallel to each other. Nucleoplasm was observed in the center of the cell. Molecular phylogeny performed with data from 16S small subunit ribosomal DNA gene (SSU rDNA) sequences showed that the three strains of C. gracile, including the type strain (PCC6307) and a newly recorded strain (Adong101619), formed a distinct clade with a high supporting value (maximum-likelihood=100, pp=1.00). Based on morphology and molecular data, we report the newly recorded C. gracile in Korea.

  • Two naturalized species, Euphorbia dentata Michx. and Securigera varia (L.) Lassen were newly reported from Korea. Euphorbia dentata, "Top-Ni-Dae-Geuk", was found from Jungbu Highway, Daechang-ri, Daechang-myeon, Yeongcheon-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do. It is distinguished from E. pulcherrima by its life form, which is herbaceous, and its upper leaves, which are uniformly green. Securigera varia, "Wang-Gwan-Gal-Kwi-Na-Mul", was found from Hangang, Yeouido, Seoul. The genus Securigera is unrecorded in Korea and distinguished from genus Hedysarum by rose-colored flowers, a peduncle 5-10 cm and by having dense umbels at the tips of the peduncles.

A report of four unrecorded Proteobacteria species isolated from soil in Korea

  • In 2015 and 2017, the National Institute of Biological Resources has isolated four unrecorded prokaryotic species designated as R-1-5, R-2-13, R-2-1, and R-1-8 from the peatland soil of Yongneup. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity determined the four strains (R-1-5, R-2-13, R-2-1, R-1-8) were most closely related to Curvibacter lanceolatus (99.93%), Massilia brevitalea (98.7%), Pseudomonas lini (99.54%), and Pseudomonas vancouverensis (99.93%), respectively. The four unrecorded strains belong to the phylum Proteobacteria, in which the genera Curvibacter and Massilia are assigned to the class Betaproteobacteria, and the genus Pseudomonas to the class Gammaproteobacteria. Since there are no publications or official reports on these four strains, these four species are new records to Korea. The strains were further characterized by Gram reaction, colony and cell morphology, basic biochemical properties, and phylogenetic position. Descriptive information of the four unrecorded species is provided.
