Monochoria vaginalis var. angustifolia (Pontederiaceae): First report for Korea (가는물달개비(물옥잠과): 한반도 미기록 식물)

  • Monochoria vaginalis var. angustifolia (Pontederiaceae) was newly found in a furrow in Imha-ri, Boeun-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do for the first time in Korea. This taxon is distinguished from the other species of the genus Monochoria in Korea by having the smallest plant height, very narrow lanceolate leaves, a cuneate leaf base, and raceme with 1 to 2 flowers. A local name was newly given, 'Ga-neun-moul-dal-ge-bi' for the species. The morphological characteristics and illustrations of the taxon as well as photographs at the habitat are provided with a taxonomic key to the species of Monochoria in Korea.

  • In the course of the taxonomic study on onbatid mites from Korea, the author obtained one nau genus, 5 new species, 1 new subspecies, and 5 species unrecorded in Korea for th first time. They are Koreonbates foliatus gen. n, sp. n., Hermannio neotricha sp. n., Xyiobates geonjiensis sp. n., Defectamems sungohi sp. n., Protoripoda flagellato sp. n., Liocarus gommatus coreanus ssp. n., Liocarus polychoihomus Wen, 1991, Tectodamoeus armatus Aok, 1984, T striatus Enami et Aoki, 1988. Oripoda trilabiata Hammer, 1961, and Dometorino tuberculata Aoki, 1984. And keys to the species and subspec~es of genera Liacorus, Defectamems, and Protoripoda are present All the specimens are deposited at the Lab of Plant Protection, Coli, ot Agr, Won Kwang Univ., hi, Korea.   • Through a floral study and resource investigation of Korean mushrooms during the year 1993, five species of Agaricales, Pseudoclitocybe cyathiformis (Bull.: Fr.) Sing.; Pholiota brunnescens A.H. Smith & K. Hesler; Coprinus angulatus Peck; Rhodophyllus bisporus Hongo; Suillus viscidipes Hongo and one form of Gasteromycetes, Lysurus mokusin (L.: Pers.) Fr.f. sinensis (Lloyd) Kobayashi, were found and described new to Korean flora. Pseudoclitocybe is described as an unrecorded genus to Korea. The color names cited are from Kornerup & Wanscher's Methuen Handbook of Colour (1984). All the specimens are deposited in the RDAGB's and ASIK's herbarium.

  • Amanita Pers. is a well-known monophyletic mushroom genus with a broad distribution. However, the diversity of Korean Amanita species has been underestimated, and most taxonomic studies conducted in Korea have only investigated their morphological characteristics. This approach is frequently insufficient for correct identification in fungal classification; therefore, we constructed a phylogeny of Amanita subgen. Lepidella in order to understand the phylogenetic placements of 16 Amanita specimens collected in Korea in 2012. The phylogeny constructed using the sequence data of the internal transcribed spacers and the partial large subunit of ribosomal RNA identified nine Amanita species (A. citrina, A. excelsa var. spissa, A. flavipes, A. fritillaria, A. oberwinklerana, A. pallidorosea, A. rubescens, A. subjunquillea, and A. volvata); of these, A. fritillaria, A. oberwinklerana, and A. pallidorosea are new to Korea.

New Report of Three Unrecorded Species in Trichoderma harzianum Species Complex in Korea

  • The genus Trichoderma (Hypocreaceae, Ascomycota) consists of globally distributed fungi. Among them, T. harzianum, one of the most commonly collected Trichoderma species, had been known as a polyphyletic or aggregate species. However, a total of 19 species were determined from the polyphyletic groups of T. harzianum. Thus, we explored Korean "T. harzianum" specimens that were collected in 2013-2014. These specimens were re-examined based on a recent study with translate elongation factor 1-alpha ($EF1{\alpha}$) sequences to reveal cryptic Trichoderma species in Korea. As a result, four different species, T. afroharzianum, T. atrobruneum, T. pyramidale, and T. harzianum, were identified. Except T. harzianum, the other three species have not been reported in Korea. In this work, we describe these species and provide figures.

The First Record of Knorringia sibirica subsp. sibirica (Polygonaceae) in Korea (한반도 미기록 식물: 시베리아여뀌(마디풀과))

  • We report a taxon of the unrecorded genus Knorringia (Polygonaceae) from Baengryeongdo, Ongin-gun, Incheon-si in the Korean peninsula. This taxon is K. sibirica (Laxm.) Tzvelev subsp. sibirica., has been known from Siberia, Mongolia and China. The new Korean name, 'Si-be-ri-a-yeo-kkwi', was given considering the species epithet and the type locality, Siberia. Description, illustration and photograph showing habitat were given.

New record of Hedyotis corymbosa, a naturalized species in Korea (한국 미기록 귀화식물: 산방백운풀)

  • One new naturalized species was recorded from Jeollanam-do Yeongam-gun, Daegu, and Daejeon in Korea. Hedyotis corymbosa grows well where there is enough sunlight; in moist, sandy soil. Hedyotis corymbosa (Rubiaceae) can be distinguished from other species in the same genus by longer peduncles, and a lot of flowers. We gave it the Korean name 'San-bang-back-un-pul' based on the specific epithet 'corymbosa'.

Notes on Some Unrecorded Species of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Collected from Rhizospheres of Plants in Korea (식물 근권토양에서 분리한 수지상균근균)

  • In this study, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) were isolated and cultivated from rhizospheres of various plants in Korea. Five species belonging to four genus were identified based on spore morphology and 18S rDNA sequence analysis: Acaulospora cavernata Claroideoglomus luteum, Diversispora aurantium, D. trimurales, Rhizophagus irregularis. These fungal species have not been cultivated or reported to date in Korea, Morphological description and phylogenetic analysis for each species were presented. This result could be useful for research of AMF diversity in Korea.

  • The genus Peronospora, an obligate biotrophic group belonging to Oomycota, causes serious damage to a variety of wild and ornamental plants, as well as cultivated crops, such as beet, rose, spinach, and tobacco. To investigate the diversity of Peronospora species parasitic to Stellaria and Pseudostellaria (Caryophyllaceae) plants in Korea, we performed a morphological analysis on dried herbarium specimens and molecular phylogenetic inferences based on internal transcribed spacer rDNA and cox2 mitochondrial DNA sequences. As a result, it was confirmed that there are four species of Peronospora parasitic to specific species of Stellaria and Pseudostellaria, all of which were hitherto unrecorded in Korea: P. alsinearum (ex Stellaria media), P. stellariae-aquaticae (ex Stellaria aquatica), P. stellariae-uliginosae (ex Stellaria alsine), and P. pseudostellariae (ex Pseudostellaria palibiniana). In addition, Peronospora specimens parasitic to Pseudostellaria davidii differed morphologically from P. pseudostellariae owing to the large and ellipsoidal conidia; this morphological discrepancy was also validated by the high genetic divergence between the two species. Peronospora casparyi sp. nov. is described and illustrated here.

A report on 14 unrecorded bacterial species isolated from the Nakdong River, South Korea

  • As a part of the research project "Survey of freshwater organisms and specimen collection," freshwater samples were collected from the Nakdong River. Among the bacterial isolates, we selected strains that showed higher than 98.7% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with confirmed bacterial species previously unreported in South Korea. The 14 new records to South Korea were phylogenetically diverse and belonged to four phyla, six classes, 11 orders, and 14 genera. At the genus level, these species were found to be affiliated with Reyranella, Ferrovibrio, Brevundimonas, and Aquidulcibacter of the class Alphaproteobacteria; Pseudomonas, Cellvibrio, and Photobacterium of the class Gammaproteobacteria; Paenibacillus and Bacillus of the phylum Firmicutes; Chryseobacterium, Flavobacterium, Pedobacter of the phylum Bacteroidetes; and Actinomadura and Leifsonia of the phylum Actinobacteria. These species were further characterized by examining their Gram reaction, colony and cell morphologies, biochemical properties, and phylogenetic positions. The detailed descriptions of these 14 previously unreported species are provided.
