Traffic and emergency monitoring systems are essential constituents of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technologies, but the lack of traffic monitoring has become a primary weakness in providing prompt emergency services. Demonstrated in numerous military applications, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have great potentials as a part of ITS infrastructure for providing quick and real-time aerial video images of large surface area to the ground. Despite of obvious advantages of UAVs for traffic monitoring and many other civil applications, it is rare to encounter success stories of UAVs in civil application including transportation. The objective of this paper is to report the outcomes of research supported by the state agency in US to investigate the feasibility of integrating UAVs into urban highway traffic monitoring as a part of ITS infrastructure. These include current technical and regulatory issues, and possible suggestions for a future UAV system in civil applications.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the fixed wing type domestic UAV for monitoring of algae bloom in aquatic environment. The UAV used in this study is operated automatically in-flight using an automatic navigation device, and flies along a path targeting preconfigured GPS coordinates of desired measurement sites input by a flight path controller. The sensors used in this study were Sequoia multi-spectral cameras. The photographed images were processed using orthomosaics, georeferenced digital surface models, and 3D mapping software such as Pix4D. In this study, NDVI(Normalized distribution vegetation index) was used for estimating the concentration of chlorophyll-a in river. Based on the NDVI analysis, the distribution areas of chlorophyll-a could be analyzed. The UAV image was compared with a airborne image at a similar time and place. UAV images were found to be effective for monitoring of chlorophyll-a in river.
The world of technology is pleasantly evolving to a stage where small robotic aid may be used to ease the work of researchers, and to one day bring more accurate results than the current human abilities allow. In the research field of species monitoring in biology, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have begun to play an important role in how research is approached, analyzed, and then applied for further investigation, particularly by focusing on a single species. This paper uses data that has been collected from June to October 2015, to demonstrate how the innovative idea of using UAVs to monitor a particular species will bring a positive development in conservation research, and what it was able to achieve in this research field so far. More precisely, we examine the potential of UAVs to take center stage in future research, as well as their current accuracy. This paper describes the use of the commercially available Phantom 2 Vision+ for the detection, assessment, and monitoring of the butterfly species Libythea celtis, demonstrating how it can help the monitoring of butterflies and how it could be developed for even more adventurous and detailed research in the future.
Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) has several advantages over conventional remote sensing techniques. They can acquire high-resolution images quickly and repeatedly. And with a comparatively lower flight altitude, they can obtain good quality images even in cloudy weather. In this paper, we discussed the state-of-the-art of the domestic and international use of UAV in agricultural sector as well as assessed its utilization and applicability for agricultural environment in Korea. Association of robotic, computer vision and geomatic technologies have established a new paradigm of low-altitude aerial remote sensing that has now been receiving attention from researchers all over the world. In a field study, it has been found that use of UAV imagery in an agricultural subsidy program can reduce the farmers' complain and provide objective evidence. UAV high resolution photography can also be helpful in monitoring the disposal zone for animal carcasses. Due to its expeditiousness and accuracy, UAV imagery can be a very useful tool to evaluate the damage in case of an agricultural disaster for both parties insurance companies and the farmers. Also high spatial and temporal resolution in UAV system can increase the prediction accuracy which in turn help to maintain the agricultural supply and demand chain.
An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV) is a powered pilotless aircraft, which is controlled remotely or autonomously. UAVs are currently employed in many military missions(surveillance, reconnaissance, communication relay, targeting, strike etc.) and a number of civilian applications(communication service, broadcast service, traffic control support, monitoring, measurement etc.). For accomplishing the UAV's missions, guarantee of survivability should be preceded. The main objective of this study is the path planning to maximize survivability for UAV based on 3-dimensional environment. A mathematical programming model is suggested by using MRPP(Most Reliable Path Problem) and solved by transforming MRPP into SPP(Shortest Path Problem). This study also suggests a $A^*PS$ algorithm based on 3-dimensional environment to UAV's path planning. According to comparison result of the suggested algorithm and SPP algorithms (Dijkstra, $A^*$ algorithm), the suggested algorithm gives better solution than SPP algorithms.
This research is to select a path planning algorithm to maximize survivability for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV). An UAV is a powered pilotless aircraft, which is controlled remotely or autonomously. UAVs are currently employed in many military missions(surveillance, reconnaissance, communication relay, targeting, strike etc.) and a number of civilian applications(communication service, broadcast service, traffic control support, monitoring, measurement etc.). In this research, a mathematical programming model is suggested by using MRPP(Most Reliable Path Problem) and verified by using ILOG CPLEX. A path planning algorithm for UAV is selected by comparing of SPP(Shortest Path Problem) algorithms which transfer MRPP into SPP.
This study was carried out to apply the UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) coupled with Multispectral sensor for the algae bloom monitoring in river. The study acquired remote sensing data using UAV on the midstream area of Gum River, one of four major rivers in South Korea. Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) is used for monitoring algae change. This study conducted water sampling and analysis in the field for correlating with NDVI values. Among the samples analyzed, the chlorophyll concentration exhibited strong and significant linear relationships with NDVI, and thus NDVI was chosen for algae bloom index to identify emergence aspect of phytoplankton in river. Aerial remote sensing technology can provide more accurate, flexible, cheaper, and faster monitoring methods of detecting and predicting eutrophication and therefore cyanobacteria bloom in water reservoirs compared to currently used technology. As a result, there was high level of correlation in chlorophyll-a and NDVI. It is expected that when this remote water quality and pollution monitoring technology is applied in the field, it would be able to improve capabilities to deal with the river water quality and pollution at the early stage.
UAVs are unmanned, autonomous or remotely piloted aircraft. As UAVs become smaller, lighter and more economical, their applications continue to expand. Researches on UAVs in the field of remote sensing show development methods and purposes similar to those on satellite images, and they are widely used in studies such as 3D image composition and monitoring. In the field of environmental impact assessment(EIA), satellite information and data are mainly used. However, only low-resolution images covering long distances and large-scale data allowing for rough examination are being provided, so their uses are seriously limited. Therefore, in this paper, we construct spatial information of forest area by using unmanned aerial vehicle and seek efficient utilization and policy improvement in the field of environmental impact assessment. As a result, high-resolution images and data from UAVs can be used to identify the location status of SEIA, EIA, and small scale EIA project plans and to evaluate detailed environmental impact analysis. In addition, when provided together with infographics about Post-environmental impact investigation, it was confirmed that the possibility of periodic spatial information construction and evaluation can be used throughout the entire project contents and project post-process.In order to provide sophisticated infographics for the EIA, drone photography and GCP surveying methods were derived. The results of this study will be used as a basis for improving high-resolution monitoring and environmental impact assessment in the forest sector.

The UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) systems like unmanned autonomous helicopters are used in various missions of flight navigation and used to collect the environmental information of the surroundings. To realize the full functionalities of the UAV, the software part becomes a challenging problem. In this paper embedded real-time software architecture for unmanned autonomous helicopter is proposed that guarantee real-time performance of hard-real time tasks and re-configurability of soft-real time and non-real time tasks. The proposed software architecture has four layers: hardware, execution, service agent and remote user interface layer according to the reactiveness level for external events. In addition, the layered separation of concurrent tasks makes different kinds of mission reconfiguration possible in the system. An Unmanned autonomous helicopter system was implemented (Kyosho RC Helicopter) in our lab to test and evaluate the performance of the proposed system.
