Recently, unmanned electric vehicles are increasingly interested among all of the world since they can provide low exhaust gas, high efficiency and high mobility. To exploit their silent maneuver and high mobility, unmanned electric vehicles have been developed since early 1980's for military. However, it is not easy to design and control a power system satisfying operating duration and mobility performance requirements based on various mission profiles for military use under the conditions of limited space and weight. Moreover it is also necessary to prevent over-charge, over-discharge and voltage unbalance between cells of battery to secure high voltage battery which is serially connected with muti-cells. In this paper, we presents power control and optimal management method for the dog-horse robot which adopts a electric power system and suggests a guide-line to manage and control to secure high voltage battery.
Recent developments of small-size unmanned or manned mobile systems such as autonomous robots, exoskeleton or armored suits, micro air vehicles, and unmanned armored vehicles require long-lasting independent power sources of high energy and power density to support the systems' operation for up to 72 hours in the fields. Chemical batteries such as Ni-MH, Li-Ion, the current primary power sources for mobile devices, however, are not capable of providing enough power and energy density for the next generation high power mobile machines. For this reason, KIMM along with KERI and KIMS has been carrying out a 500W MTG development project under the DAPA's "Next generation military power source R&D program" since 2009. In this paper, a design process for a 500W MTG system currently being developed at KIMM is briefly described and the technical issues related to its development are addressed.
Unmanned surface vehicles(USVs) have been developed for special operations in foreign navies. These will be employed to conduct critical missions including inspection, coast guard, ISR, fire protection, precision strike, mine interception warfare and antisubmarine warfare. It is also known the USVs will be deployed at the front line of the network-centric warfare to replace the manned naval operations. The unmanned operation can, thus, minimize unnecessary risk to personnel and enhance the success probability for the imposed mission. In this research, the USVs which are under operation and development in foreign navies are investigated. Based on this, an USV with $7\~10m$ of length and 10ton of weight for the Korean Navy which can be deployed near the Northern Limit Line(NLL), is proposed.
This paper develops scenarios to evaluate the safety performance of Unmanned Ground Vehicle on military circumstances. The scenarios were created using Pegasus Project 6-layer format. These scenarios consist of straight road, curved road, merging road and crossroad. We adapt these scenarios to unpaved road. The characteristics of unpaved roads were divided into roughness, friction coefficient and road frequency. This adaption is validated via computer simulation. We observe the scan lines of vehicle become tangled of the straight road that make the cognitive abilities of the vehicle low and the lane-keeping is unable when vehicles entering curved off-roads over 40 km/h. The developed scenarios will contribute to enhancing stability from the perspective of introducing autonomous driving technology to Korean military.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly needed as they can replace manned aircrafts in dangerous military missions. However, because of their low autonomy, current UAVs can execute missions only under continuous operator control. To overcome this limitation, higher autonomy levels of UAVs based on autonomous situational awareness is required. In this paper, we propose an autonomous situational awareness software consisting of situation awareness management, threat recognition, threat identification, and threat space analysis to detect dynamic situational change by external threats. We implemented the proposed software in real mission computer hardware and evaluated the performance of situational awareness toward dynamic radar threats in flight simulations.
The small unmanned robot developed in this paper can perform tasks such as surveillance and reconnaissance in the battle field. The noise generated during the operation of the robot may expose the operation area. Therefore, in this study, we developed a method to quantitatively measure the noise of the developed small unmanned ground robot. The criteria for noise measurement in indoor and outdoor are presented. It was used for statistical verification method to verify the reliability of the developed noise measurement method. The noise was measured at different places, and the correlation was analyzed. Thus, we proposed a method to predict the noise level in the operation area where the robot is operated by the noise test data measured during the development process.
Recently many studies of Radar systems mounted on ground vehicles for autonomous driving, SLAM (Simultaneous localization and mapping) and collision avoidance are reported. In near field, several hits per an object are generated after signal processing of Radar data. Hence, clustering is an essential technique to estimate their shapes and positions precisely. This paper proposes a method of grouping hits in range-doppler domains into clusters which represent each object, according to the pre-defined rules. The rules are based on the perceptual cues to separate hits by object. The morphological connectedness between hits and the characteristics of SNR distribution of hits are adopted as the perceptual cues for clustering. In various simulations for the performance assessment, the proposed method yielded more effective performance than other techniques.
This paper describes the analysis of lightning strike zoning, the indirect lightning data simulation and the protection design for lightning indirect effects of equipment by lightning strike for unmanned aircraft consisting of composite wings. Through the analysis of lightning strike zoning according to the external shape of unmanned aerial vehicles, the structure areas that should be protected during lightning strike is derived, and the protection requirements of lightning indirect effects for flight critical equipments and equipment that must be operated upon lightning strike was derived. Lightning protection levels according to the location of mounting equipment and surrounding structure materials for each equipment was derived, and the protection design of the unmanned aerial vehicle with composite structures was also proposed from direct effect of lightning. Later, the lightning protection technology will be verified by the ground test of lightning direct and indirect effects.
