Manned-unmanned teaming can be a very promising air-to-air combat tactic since it can maximize the advantage of combining human insight with the robustness of the machine. The rapid advances in artificial intelligence and autonomous control technology will speed up the development of manned-unmanned teaming air-to-air combat system. In this paper, we introduce a manned-unmanned teaming air-to-air combat tactic which is composed of a manned aircraft and an UAV. In this tactic, a manned aircraft equipped with radar is functioning both as a sensor to detect the hostile aircraft and as a controller to direct the UAV to engage the hostile aircraft. The UAV equipped with missiles is functioning as an actor to engage the hostile aircraft. We also developed a combat scenario of executing this tactic where the manned-unmanned teaming is engaging a hostile aircraft. The hostile aircraft is equipped with both missiles and radar. To demonstrate the efficiency of the tactic, we run the simulation of the scenario of the tactic. Using the simulation, we found the optimal formation and maneuver for the manned-unmanned teaming where the manned-unmanned teaming can survive while the hostile aircraft is shot-downed. The result of this study can provide an insight to how manned aircraft can collaborate with UAV to carry out air-to-air combat missions.

The typical missions for the current stand-off UAVs are surveillance and reconnaissance. On the other hand, the primary mission for the future UCAS will be combat mission such as SEAD under the man-made ultimately hostile environment including SAM, antiaircraft artillery, threat radar, etc. Therefore, one of the most important challenges in UCAS design is improvement of survivability. The current studies for aircraft combat survivability are focused on the improvement of susceptibility and vulnerability of manned aircraft system. Although the survivability design methodology for UCAS might be very similar to the manned combat system but there are some differences in mission environment, system configuration, performance between manned and unmanned systems. So the parameters and their sensitivities which affect aircraft combat survivability are different in qualitatively and quantitatively. The susceptibility related parameters for F-16 C/D and X-45A as an example of manned and unmanned system are identified and the susceptibility parameter sensitivities are analyzed by using Monte-Carlo Simulation in this study.

Recently, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency(DARPA) in the United States is studying a new concept of war called Mosaic Warfare, and MUM-T(Manned-Unmanned Teaming) through the division of missions between expensive manned and inexpensive unmanned aircraft is at the center. This study began with the aim of deriving the priority of autonomous functions according to the role of unmanned aerial vehicles in the present and present collaboration that is emerging along with the concept of mosaic warfare. The autonomous function of unmanned aerial vehicles between the presence and absence collaboration may vary in priority depending on the tactical operation of unmanned aerial vehicles, such as air-to-air, air-to-ground, and surveillance and reconnaissance. In this paper, ACE (Air Combat Evaluation), Skyborg, and Longshot, which are recently studied by DARPA, derive the priority of autonomous functions according to air-to-air collaboration, and use AHP analysis. The results of this study are meaningful in that it is possible to recognize the priorities of autonomous functions necessary for unmanned aircraft in order to develop unmanned aerial vehicles according to the priority of autonomous functions and to construct a roadmap for technology implementation. Furthermore, it is believed that the mass production and utilization of unmanned air vehicles will increase if one unmanned air vehicle platform with only essential functions necessary for air-to-air, air-to-air, and surveillance is developed and autonomous functions are expanded in the form of modules according to the tactical operation concept.
LiDAR(Light Detection and Ranging) technology provides realistic 3-dimension image information, and it has been widely utilized in various fields. However, the utilization of this technology in the military domain requires prompt responses to dynamically changing tactical environment and is therefore limited since LiDAR technology requires complex processing in order for extensive amounts of LiDAR data to be utilized. In this paper, we introduce an Unmanned Aircraft Platform Based Real-time LiDAR Data Processing Architecture that can provide real-time detection information by parallel processing and off-loading between the UAV processing and high-performance data processing areas. We also conducted experiments to verify the feasibility of our proposed architecture. Processing with ARM cluster similar to the UAV platform processing area results in similar or better performance when compared to the current method. We determined that our proposed architecture can be utilized in the military domain for tactical and combat purposes such as unmanned monitoring system.

National defense research and development is trying to develop the weapon system to satisfy users' requirements at minimum cost, high quality and the shortest period. Under integrated database computer environments, development processes and tools have been developed to implement system engineering and concurrent engineering systematically. In the aerospace defense weapon system, the fixed wing development department has developed and operated the integrated operation and management information system based on web technology to manage efficiently the technical information generated by the R&D process. When this system was applied to the existing R&D project for the aircraft weapon system, it proved and verified its efficiency. In this paper, we describe the future development plan of an integrated R&D framework and an integrated weapon system database based on the integrated operation and management information system which are able to centrol the technical information of KF-X, UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) and UCAV(Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles) programs. We also describe an interoperability and integration plan with WISEMAN which will be operated soon in our research Institute.

An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is a powered pilotless aircraft, which is controlled remotely or autonomously. UAVs are an attractive alternative for many scientific and military organizations. UAVs can perform operations that are considered to be risky or uninhabitable for human. UA V s are currently employed in many military missions such as reconnaissance, surveillance, enemy radar jamming, decoying, suppression of enemy air defense (SEAD), fixed and moving target attack, and air-to-air combat. UAVs also are employed in a number of civilian applications such as monitoring ozone depletion, inclement weather, traffic congestion, and taking images of dangerous territory. For accomplishing the UAV's missions, guarantee of survivability should be preceded. The main objective of this study is to suggest a mathematical programming model and a $A^*PS$-PGA (A-star with Post Smoothing-Parallel Genetic Algorithm) for an UAV's path planning to maximize survivability. A mathematical programming model is composed by using MRPP (Most Reliable Path Problem) and TSP (Traveling Salesman Problem). A path planning algorithm for UAV is applied by transforming MRPP into SPP (Shortest Path Problem).

The plume infrared signature effects at various flight conditions of aircraft were investigated for the purpose of reducing infrared signature level. The nozzle of a virtual subsonic unmanned combat aerial vehicle was designed through a performance analysis. Nozzle and associated plume flowfields were first analyzed using a density-based CFD code and plume IR signature was then calculated on the basis of the narrow-band model. Finally, qualitative information for the plume infrared signature characteristics was obtained through the analysis of the IR signature effects at various flight conditions.
Nowadays, Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle(UCAV) has become an important aircraft system for the national defense. For its efficiency and survivability, shape optimization of UCAV is an essential part of its design process. In this paper, shape optimization of UCAV was processed for aerodynamic performance improvement and Radar Cross Section(RCS) reduction using Multi Objective Genetic Algorithm(MOGA). Lift and induced drag, friction drag, RCS were calculated using panel method, boundary layer theory, Physical Optics(PO) approximation respectively. In particular, calculation applied Radar Absorbing Material(RAM) was performed for the additional RCS reduction. Results are indicated that shape optimization is performed well for improving aerodynamic performance, reducing RCS. Further study will be performed with higher fidelity tools and consider other design segments including structure.

Since the concept of Manned-UnManned Teaming(MUM-T) and Unmanned Aircraft System(UAS) can efficiently respond to rapidly changing battle space, many studies are being conducted as key components of the mosaic warfare environment. In this paper, we propose a rule-based AI engagement model based on Basic Fighter Maneuver(BFM) capable of Within-Visual-Range(WVR) air-to-air combat and a simulation environment in which human pilots can participate. In order to develop a rule-based AI engagement model that can pilot a fighter with a 6-DOF dynamics model, tactical manuals and human pilot experience were configured as knowledge specifications and modeled as a behavior tree structure. Based on this, we improved the shortcomings of existing air combat models. The proposed model not only showed a 100 % winning rate in engagement with human pilots, but also visualized decision-making processes such as tactical situations and maneuvering behaviors in real time. We expect that the results of this research will serve as a basis for development of various AI-based engagement models and simulators for human pilot training and embedded software test platform for fighter.

A computational system to predict flowfield and infrared signature in aircraft exhaust system is developed. As the first step, a virtual mission profile is considered and an engine is selected through a performance analysis. Then a nozzle that meets the requirement of each mission is designed. The internal flow in the exhaustion nozzle at the maximum thrust is analyzed using a state-of-the-art CFD code. In addition, a system to combine information of the skin temperature distribution of the nozzle and after-body surface with an infrared prediction code is developed. Finally, qualitative results for the infrared signature reduction design are obtained by investigating the infrared signature level under various conditions.
