For this purpose, the freshmen were collected from A University in Gyeonggi Province from October 16 to 30, 2017. We analyzed 1,369 data in terms of the individual, family, educational institution, and social factors using t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression. The major findings of the study are as follows. First, individual factors which influence dropout intention of freshmen are overall university satisfaction, the degree to which they think their majors fit them, the degree to which they are willing to recommend their department to others, a plan to dropout, and a plan to take a leave of absence. Second, the family factors are the encouragement of parents and family to do well in college. Third, educational institution factors are satisfaction with the curriculum of majors, a sense of belonging to department, the degree to which the professors instill career vision and self-esteem, and satisfaction with college facilities. Fourth, social factors are the degree they think going to college was a good choice in their life and the degree they think knowledge learned in college is helpful to them. Based on the results, the study suggested what to be considered at professors, school personnel, and university level and discussed how to reduce dropout rate of freshmen in university.

  • Purpose: Mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder are a major mental health problem in college students. We investigate the prevalence of depression and bipolar disorder and the relevance of risk factors for these mood disorders among one college freshmen. Methods: The subjects were 2,865 college students who entered one university located in Seoul and Ansung in 2009. We used BDI (Beck Depression Inventory) for depression assessment and K-MDQ (Mood Disorder Questionnaire) for bipolar disorder assessment. Demographic and socioeconomic factors were measured by questionnaire. Height, weight, blood pressure, total cholesterol, complete blood cell count, and liver function test data were obtained by physical examination for freshmen. Chi-square test and multiple logistic regression were performed to analyze the possible risk factors for depression and bipolar disorder. Results: With different BDI cutoff value, 16 and 21, the prevalence of depression was 8.7% (male: 7.6%, female: 10.1%) and 2.4% (male: 2.5%, female: 2.3%), separately. 'Low economic status', 'urban birth place', and 'low grade at entrance' were significantly associated with depression. Using the original cutoff criterion, defined as clustering of 7 or more symptoms that caused moderate or severe problems, the prevalence of bipolar disorder was 1.3% (male: 1.4%, female: 1.1%). The risk factor of bipolar disorder was academic fields (art fields). Conclusion: Depression and bipolar disorder are common disease in college freshmen. Therefore, Campus-based mental health service program is needed to help with prevention of and early intervention of these mood disorders.

  • Purpose : This study aimed to identify factors that influence selection of occupational therapy as a college major by freshmen. Methods : A survey was conducted on 308 freshmen majoring in occupational therapy from March 2022 to September 2022. The questionnaire consisted of five items about general characteristics, two about the choice of college and major, three about the timing of major selection, three about information acquisition, and one about the university application process. Results : While choosing a university, 37% of the students primarily considered the available choice of majors, whereas 41% considered the college application period. Employment rate was another important factor that was considered when choosing a department. Most students learned about occupational therapy through research on physical therapy and primarily gathered information by searching on "Naver and blogs." Among the descriptions of occupational therapy, the most interesting keyword was "hospital" (54 %). Conclusion : This study investigated the factors that influenced the college major selection by new students in the department of occupational therapy. This study provides meaningful basic data that can be referred to when promoting the department of occupational therapy. A limitation of this study is that a high percentage of students from Gyeongnam were included, and hence, further research that investigates according to region is needed. Moreover, detailed investigations on factors related to university applications in each region are required. It is also necessary to investigate the relationship between the characteristics of freshmen and the determining factors of the department and the admission process.
