A Study on the Field Application of the Measurement Technique for Static Displacement of Bridge Using Ambient Vibration (상시 진동을 이용한 교량 정적 처짐 산정 기술의 현장 적용성 연구)

  • In safety assessment of a aged bridge, dynamic characteristics and displacement are directly related to the rigidity of the structural system, especially displacement is the most important factor as the physical quantity that the bridge user can directly detect. However, in order to measure the displacement of the bridge, it is difficult to install displacement sensors at the bottom of the bridge and conduct traffic blocking and loading tests, resulting in increased costs or impossible measurements depending on the bridge's environment. In this study, a method of measuring the displacement of a bridge using only accelerometers without installing displacement sensors and ambient vibration without a loading test was proposed. For the analysis of bridge dynamic characteristics and displacement using ambient vibration, the mode shape and natural frequency of the bridge were extracted using a TDD technique known to enable quick analysis with simple calculations, and the unit load displacement of the bridge was analyzed through flexibility analysis to calculate static displacement. To verify this proposed technology, an on-site test was conducted on C Bridge, and the results were compared with the measured values of the loading test and the structural analysis data. As a result, it was confirmed that the mode shape and natural frequency were 0.42 to 1.13 % error ratio, and the maximum displacement at the main span was 3.58 % error ratio. Therefore, the proposed technology can be used as a basis data for indirectly determine the safety of the bridge by comparing the amount of displacement compared to the design and analysis values by estimating the displacement of the bridge that could not be measured due to the difficulty of installing displacement sensors.

  • Fiber reinforced composite (FRC) is usually used as a connector joining a few teeth into one unit in orthodontics. However, fracture often occurs during the two to three years of the orthodontic treatment period due to repeated occlusal loading or water sorption in the oral environment. We simulated the repair by overlapping and attaching portions of two FRC strips in the middle and performed a three-point bending test to investigate the changes of the repair strength among the different FRC groups. The specimens were grouped according to the overlapping lengths of the two FRC strips, which were 1, 2, 3 and 4 mm (group E1, E2, E3 and E4, respectively) and the control group consisted of unrepaired, intact FRC strips. Each group consisted of 6 specimens and were cured with a light emitting diode curing unit. Group E4 showed the highest maximum loads of 2.67 N, then the control group (2.39 N), group E3 (2.35 N), E2 (2.10 N), and E1 (1.75 N) in decreasing order. Group E4 also showed the highest stiffness, which was 2.32 N/mm, however, the stiffness of group E3 (2.06N/mm) was higher than that of the control group (1.88 N/mm). According to the visual examination, the specimens tended to be bent rather than being fractured into two pieces with an increased length of overlapping portions. The above results suggest that a minimum overlapping length of 3 mm was necessary to obtain an adequate repair of a 10 mm length of FRC connector. In addition, the critical section adjacent to the joint area, where the thickness decreased abruptly, should be reinforced with flowable resin to minimize the bending tendency.

  • To find out the power tiller's travel and tractive characteristics on the general slope land, the tractive p:nver transmitting system was divided into the internal an,~ external power transmission systems. The performance of power tiller's engine which is the initial unit of internal transmission system was tested. In addition, the mathematical model for the tractive force of driving wheel which is the initial unit of external transmission system, was derived by energy and force balance. An analytical solution of performed for tractive forces was determined by use of the model through the digital computer programme. To justify the reliability of the theoretical value, the draft force was measured by the strain gauge system on the general slope land and compared with theoretical values. The results of the analytical and experimental performance of power tiller on the field may be summarized as follows; (1) The mathematical equation of rolIing resistance was derived as $$Rh=\frac {W_z-AC \[1+ \frac{sl}{K} \(\varrho ^{-\frac{sl}{K}-1\)\] sin\theta_1}} {tan\phi \[1+ \frac{sl}{K} \(\varrho ^{-\frac{sl}{K}-1\)\]+\frac{tan\theta_1}{1}$$ and angle of rolling resistance as $$\theta _1 - tan^1\[ \frac {2T(AcrS_0 - T)+\sqrt (T-AcrS_0)^2(2T)^2-4(T^2-W_2^2r^2)\times (T-AcrS_0)^2 W_z^2r^2S_0^2tan^2\phi} {2(T^2-W_z^2r^2)S_0tan\phi}\] $$and the equation of frft force was derived as$$P=(AC+Rtan\phi)\[1+ \frac{sl}{K} \(\varrho ^{-\frac{sl}{K}-1\)\]cos\phi_1 \ulcorner \frac {W_z \ulcorner{AC\[ [1+ \frac{sl}{K} \(\varrho ^{-\frac{sl}{K}-1\)\]sin\phi_1 {tan\phi[1+ \frac{sl}{K} \(\varrho ^{-\frac{sl}{K}-1\]+ \frac {tan\phi_1} { 1} \ulcorner W_1sin\alpha $$The slip coefficient K in these equations was fitted to approximately 1. 5 on the level lands and 2 on the slope land. (2) The coefficient of rolling resistance Rn was increased with increasing slip percent 5 and did not influenced by the angle of slope land. The angle of rolling resistance Ol was increasing sinkage Z of driving wheel. The value of Ol was found to be within the limits of Ol =2\ulcorner "'16\ulcorner. (3) The vertical weight transfered to power tiller on general slope land can be estim ated by use of th~ derived equation: $$R_pz= \frac {\sum_{i=1}^{4}{W_i}} {l_T} { (l_T-l) cos\alpha cos\beta \ulcorner \bar(h) sin \alpha - W_1 cos\alpha cos\beta$$The vertical transfer weight $R_pz$ was decreased with increasing the angle of slope land. The ratio of weight difference of right and left driving wheel on slop eland,$\lambda= \frac { {W_L_Z} - {W_R_Z}} {W_Z} $, was increased from ,$\lambda$=0 to$\lambda$=0.4 with increasing the angle of side slope land ($\beta = 0^\circ~20^\circ) (4) In case of no draft resistance, the difference between the travelling velocities on the level and the slope land was very small to give 0.5m/sec, in which the travelling velocity on the general slope land was decreased in curvilinear trend as the draft load increased. The decreasing rate of travelling velocity by the increase of side slope angle was less than that by the increase of hill slope angle a, (5) Rate of side slip by the side slope angle was defined as $ S_r=\frac {S_s}{l_s} \times$ 100( %), and the rate of side slip of the low travelling velocity was larger than that of the high travelling velocity. (6) Draft forces of power tiller did not affect by the angular velocity of driving wheel, and maximum draft coefficient occurred at slip percent of S=60% and the maximum draft power efficiency occurred at slip percent of S=30%. The maximum draft coefficient occurred at slip percent of S=60% on the side slope land, and the draft coefficent was nearly constant regardless of the side slope angle on the hill slope land. The maximum draft coefficient occurred at slip perecent of S=65% and it was decreased with increasing hill slope angle $\alpha$. The maximum draft power efficiency occurred at S=30 % on the general slope land. Therefore, it would be reasonable to have the draft operation at slip percent of S=30% on the general slope land. (7) The portions of the power supplied by the engine of the power tiller which were used as the source of draft power were 46.7% on the concrete road, 26.7% on the level land, and 13~20%; on the general slope land ($\alpha = O~ 15^\circ ,\beta = 0 ~ 10^\circ$) , respectively. Therefore, it may be desirable to develope the new mechanism of the external pO'wer transmitting system for the general slope land to improved its performance.l slope land to improved its performance.

Performance assessment of an urban stormwater infiltration trench considering facility maintenance (침투도랑 유지관리를 통한 도시 강우유출수 처리 성능 평가)

  • Stormwater runoff containing considerable amounts of pollutants such as particulates, organics, nutrients, and heavy metals contaminate natural bodies of water. At present, best management practices (BMP) intended to reduce the volume and treat pollutants from stormwater runoff were devised to serve as cost-effective measures of stormwater management. However, improper design and lack of proper maintenance can lead to degradation of the facility, making it unable to perform its intended function. This study evaluated an infiltration trench (IT) that went through a series of maintenance operations. 41 monitored rainfall events from 2009 to 2016 were used to evaluate the pollutant removal capabilities of the IT. Assessment of the water quality and hydrological data revealed that the inflow volume was the most relative factor affecting the unit pollutant loads (UPL) entering the facility. Seasonal variations also affected the pollutant removal capabilities of the IT. During the summer season, the increased rainfall depths and runoff volumes diminished the pollutant removal efficiency (RE) of the facility due to increased volumes that washed off larger pollutant loads and caused the IT to overflow. Moreover, the system also exhibited reduced pollutant RE for the winter season due to frozen media layers and chemical-related mechanisms impacted by the low winter temperature. Maintenance operations also posed considerable effects of the performance of the IT. During the first two years of operation, the IT exhibited a decrease in pollutant RE due to aging and lack of proper maintenance. However, some events also showed reduced pollutant RE succeeding the maintenance as a result of disturbed sediments that were not removed from the geotextile. Ultimately, the presented effects of maintenance operations in relation to the pollutant RE of the system may lead to the optimization of maintenance schedules and procedures for BMP of same structure.

Numerical Analyses for Evaluating Factors which Influence the Behavioral Characteristics of Side of Rock Socketed Drilled Shafts (암반에 근입된 현장타설말뚝의 주면부 거동에 영향을 미치는 변수분석을 위한 수치해석)

  • Drilled shafts are a common foundation solution for large concentrated loads. Such piles are generally constructed by drilling through softer soils into rock and the section of the shaft which is drilled through rock contributes most of the load bearing capacity. Drilled shafts derive their bearing capacity from both shaft and base resistance components. The length and diameter of the rock socket must be sufficient to carry the loads imposed on the pile safely without excessive settlements. The base resistance component can contribute significantly to the ultimate capacity of the pile. However, the shaft resistance is typically mobilized at considerably smaller pile movements than that of the base. In addition, the base response can be adversely affected by any debris that is left in the bottom of the socket. The reliability of base response therefore depends on the use of a construction and inspection technique which leaves the socket free of debris. This may be difficult and costly to achieve, particularly in deep sockets, which are often drilled under water or drilling slurry. As a consequence of these factors, shaft resistance generally dominates pile performance at working loads. The efforts to improve the prediction of drilled shaft performance are therefore primarily concerned with the complex mechanisms of shaft resistance development. The shaft resistance only is concerned in this study. The nature of the interface between the concrete pile shaft and the surrounding rock is critically important to the performance of the pile, and is heavily influenced by the construction practices. In this study, the influences of asperity characteristics such as the heights and angles, the strength characteristics and elastic constants of surrounding rock masses and the depth and length of rock socket, et. al. on the shaft resistance of drilled shafts are investigated from elasto-plastic analyses( FLAC). Through the parametric studies, among the parameters, the vertical stress on the top layer of socket, the height of asperity and cohesion and poison's ratio of rock masses are major influence factors on the unit peak shaft resistance.

  • Viral load and the duration of viral shedding of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) are important determinants of the transmission of coronavirus disease 2019. In this study, we examined the effects of viral doses on the lung and spleen of K18-hACE2 transgenic mice by temporal histological and transcriptional analyses. Approximately, 1×105 plaque-forming units (PFU) of SARS-CoV-2 induced strong host responses in the lungs from 2 days post inoculation (dpi) which did not recover until the mice died, whereas responses to the virus were obvious at 5 days, recovering to the basal state by 14 dpi at 1×102 PFU. Further, flow cytometry showed that number of CD8+ T cells continuously increased in 1×102 PFU-virus-infected lungs from 2 dpi, but not in 1×105 PFU-virus-infected lungs. In spleens, responses to the virus were prominent from 2 dpi, and number of B cells was significantly decreased at 1×105 PFU; however, 1×12 PFU of virus induced very weak responses from 2 dpi which recovered by 10 dpi. Although the defense responses returned to normal and the mice survived, lung histology showed evidence of fibrosis, suggesting sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our findings indicate that specific effectors of the immune response in the lung and spleen were either increased or depleted in response to doses of SARS-CoV-2. This study demonstrated that the response of local and systemic immune effectors to a viral infection varies with viral dose, which either exacerbates the severity of the infection or accelerates its elimination.

Packaging Technology for the Optical Fiber Bragg Grating Multiplexed Sensors (광섬유 브래그 격자 다중화 센서 패키징 기술에 관한 연구)

  • The packaged optical fiber Bragg grating sensors which were networked by multiplexing the Bragg grating sensors with WDM technology were investigated in application for the structural health monitoring of the marine trestle structure transporting the ship. The optical fiber Bragg grating sensor was packaged in a cylindrical shape made of aluminum tubes. Furthermore, after the packaged optical fiber sensor was inserted in polymeric tube, the epoxy was filled inside the tube so that the sensor has resistance and durability against sea water. The packaged optical fiber sensor component was investigated under 0.2 MPa of hydraulic pressure and was found to be robust. The number and location of Bragg gratings attached at the trestle were determined where the trestle was subject to high displacement obtained by the finite element simulation. Strain of the part in the trestle being subjected to the maximum load was analyzed to be ${\sim}1000{\mu}{\varepsilon}$ and thus shift in Bragg wavelength of the sensor caused by the maximum load of the trestle was found to be ~1,200 pm. According to results of the finite element analysis, the Bragg wavelength spacings of the sensors were determined to have 3~5 nm without overlapping of grating wavelengths between sensors when the trestle was under loads and thus 50 of the grating sensors with each module consisting of 5 sensors could be networked within 150 nm optical window at 1550 nm wavelength of the Bragg wavelength interrogator. Shifts in Bragg wavelength of the 5 packaged optical fiber sensors attached at the mock trestle unit were well interrogated by the grating interrogator which used the optical fiber loop mirror, and the maximum strain rate was measured to be about $235.650{\mu}{\varepsilon}$. The modelling result of the sensor packaging and networking was in good agreements with experimental result each other.

  • Power tiller is a major unit of agricultural machinery being used on farms in Korea. About 180.000 units are introduced by 1977 and the demand for power tiller is continuously increasing as the farm mechanization progress. Major farming operations done by power tiller are the tillage, pumping, spraying, threshing, and hauling by exchanging the corresponding implements. In addition to their use on a relatively mild slope ground at present, it is also expected that many of power tillers could be operated on much inclined land to be developed by upland enlargement programmed. Therefore, research should be undertaken to solve many problems related to an effective untilization of power tillers on slope ground. The major objective of this study was to find out the travelling and tractive characteristics of power tillers being operated on general slope ground.In order to find out the critical travelling velocity and stability limit of slope ground for the side sliding and the dynamic side overturn of the tiller and tiller-trailer system, the mathematical model was developed based on a simplified physical model. The results analyzed through the model may be summarized as follows; (1) In case of no collision with an obstacle on ground, the equation of the dynamic side overturn developed was: $$\sum_n^{i=1}W_ia_s(cos\alpha cos\phi-{\frac {C_1V^2sin\phi}{gRcos\beta})-I_{AB}\frac {v^2}{Rr}}=0$$ In case of collision with an obstacle on ground, the equation was: $$\sum_n^{i=1}W_ia_s\{cos\alpha(1-sin\phi_1)-{\frac {C_1V^2sin\phi}{gRcos\beta}\}-\frac {1}{2}I_{TP} \( {\frac {2kV_2} {d_1+d_2}\)-I_{AB}{\frac{V^2}{Rr}} \( \frac {\pi}{2}-\frac {\pi}{180}\phi_2 \} = 0 $$ (2) As the angle of steering direction was increased, the critical travelling veloc\ulcornerities of side sliding and dynamic side overturn were decreased. (3) The critical travelling velocity was influenced by both the side slope angle .and the direct angle. In case of no collision with an obstacle, the critical velocity $V_c$ was 2.76-4.83m/sec at $\alpha=0^\circ$, $\beta=20^\circ$ ; and in case of collision with an obstacle, the critical velocity $V_{cc}$ was 1.39-1.5m/sec at $\alpha=0^\circ$, $\beta=20^\circ$ (4) In case of no collision with an obstacle, the dynamic side overturn was stimu\ulcornerlated by the carrying load but in case of collision with an obstacle, the danger of the dynamic side overturn was decreased by the carrying load. (7) In case of running up and downward with the first set of high speed and no collision with an obstacle, the limit of slope angle of dynamic side overturn was $\beta=30^\circ-35^\circ$ (8) When the power tiller without implement attached travels up and down on the general slope ground with first set of high speed, the limit of slope angle of dynamic side overturn was $\beta=32^\circ-39^\circ$ in case of no collision with an obstacle, and $\beta=11^\circ-22^\circ$ in case of collision with an obstacle, respectively.

Statistical Analysis of Water Flow and Water Quality Data in the Imjin River Basin for Total Pollutant Load Management (임진강 유역 오염물질 총량관리를 위한 유량-수질 자료의 통계분석)

  • The purpose of this study was assessment the quality of water by using the statistical analysis technique of the Water flow and water quality from January 2012 to December 2016 at the unit basin for total pollutant load management system (TPLMS) in the Imjin River. Water flow and water quality were monitored at an average of 8 day intervals, 11 parameters were used for correlation analysis, principal component analysis (PCA), factor analysis (FA), and cluster analysis (CA). The Hierarchical CA was classified into three according to the change of space, such as natural rivers, urban rivers, point with large influence of point pollution source, it was found that the type of contamination source the similarity of water quality affected the classification of cluster. Using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc Analysis, there were statistically significant differences between mean values among the clusters. Correlation analysis showed the correlation coefficient between $COD_{Mn}$ and TOC was 0.951 (p<0.01) and the correlation was statistically significantly higher. According to the result PCA and FA, 3 principal components can explaining 72% of the total variations in water quality characteristics and main factor was EC, $BOD_5$, $COD_{Mn}$, TN, TP and TOC indirect indicators of organic matter and nutrients were influenced. This study presented the regression equation obtained by applying the factor scores to the multiple linear regression analysis and concluded that the management Indirect indicators of organic matter and nutrients is important for water quality management in the Imjin River basin.
