In order to improve the performance of the PM (Particulate Matter) filter, the TPMS structure was used as a flow controller to control the flow entering the filter. Among various TPMS structures, a primitive structure that is easy to utilize 3D printing technique was selected and the effect of unit cell size was analyzed. In addition, numerical analysis was performed and swirl ratio was analyzed to confirm changes in filter inlet flow characteristics that affect changes in filter performance. Unit cell size is closely related to filter performance, and both PM collection efficiency and pressure drop increase as unit cell size decreases. Through quality factor (QF) comparison, which comprehensively evaluate collection efficiency and pressure drop, it was confirmed that when the unit cell size is 5 mm, PM collection efficiency increases, but the flow controller actually reduces filter performance. QF values are similar for unit cell sizes of 10 and 20 mm, and it is advantageous to select the unit cell size among these two considering collection efficiency and operating costs. The filter's collection performance increases due to the increase in swirl flow caused by the primitive structure, and the filter's collection efficiency increases due to the swirl flow that increases throughout the flow field as the unit cell size becomes smaller.
This paper introduces a conceptual design of a combined scroll expander-compressor unit for a fuel cell. Since air discharged out of the fuel cell stack has still high pressure energy, some power can be extracted from the air by directing it to pass through an expanding device. Such extracted power can be used to drive an auxiliary compressor. For this purpose, a scroll type expander coupled to a scroll type compressor was designed for a 1kW-class fuel cell. The orbiting scroll members of the expander and the compressor were made to share three of common drive shafts installed in the mid frame plate. Performance analysis for the combined expander-compressor unit showed that the installation of this unit could reduce the auxiliary power consumption in the fuel cell by about 42%.
In the present study, computations for flow fields inside the CDI unit cells with electrodes and spacers have been made to evaluate their performance. Three types of unit cells that include a planar type, a serpentine channel type, and a spiral wound type were considered and their flow characteristics were compared. From the computational results, it is found that the serpentine channel type has a large flow resistance and can not guarantee the outflow flux for industrial applications. On the other hand, the planar type can sustain a large enough outflow flux but it's efficiency is low for the electrode-use because of the non-uniform velocity distribution inside the cell and dead zones in every corner. Finally, The spiral wound type has not only a large outflow flux as much as the planar type has, but also a high efficiency for the electrode-use because of uniform velocity distribution. From this comparison, we can expect that the spiral wound type of CDI unit cell would have a high performance deionization capability.
Solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC) is an electrochemical energy conversion system with high efficiency and low-emission of pollution. In order to reduce the operating temperature of SOFC system under $800^{\circ}C$, the thickness reduction of YSZ electrolyte to be as thin as possible, e.g., less than 10 ${\mu}m$ are considered with the microstructure control and optimum design of unit cell. Methods for reducing the thickness of YSZ electrolyte have been investigated in coin cell. Moreover, a large unit cell($8cm{\times}8cm$) for SOFC was fabricated using an anode-supported electrolyte assembly with a thinner electrolyte layer, which was prepared by a tape casting method with a co-sintering technique. we studied the design factors such as active layer, electrolyte thickness, cathode composition, etc,. by the coin type of unit cell ahead of the fabrication process of a large unit cell and also reviewed about the evaluation technique of a large size unit cell such as interconnect design, sealing materials and current collector and so forth. Electrochemical evaluations of the unit cells, including measurements such as power density and impedance, were performed and analyzed. Maximum power density and polarization impedance of coin cell were 0.34W/$cm^2$ and $0.45{\Omega}cm^2$ at $800^{\circ}C$, respectively. However, Maxium power density of a large unit cell($5cm{\times}5cm$) decreased to 0.21W/$cm^2$ at $800^{\circ}C$ due to the increase of ohmic resistance. However, It was found that the potential value of a large unit cell loaded by 0.22A/$cm^2$ showed 0.76V at 100hrs without the degradation of unit cell.
Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) is an attractive candidate for residential power generator due to fast start-up and stop, high efficiency, low emission, and high power density. In this study, we employ short module stack to understand the performance of the unit cell of the stack in terms of operating temperatures. To simulate the practical fuel cell stack of residential power generator, the structure and active area of the short module stack is kept the same as that of the practical fuel cell. The results shows that the electric potential of short module stack is different from the number of cells times the potential of unit cell because of cell-to-cell variation.
Electrolyte loss is considered as one of the major obstacles limiting the life time of molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFCs). Unit cells with an effective area of 100 $cm^2$ were prepared and were operated to determine the optimum matrix thickness which contains the maximum amount of electrolyte without serious preformance loss caused by high resistance. Matrices with different thickness, 1.45, 1.8, and 2.3 mm, were used in unit cells and those cells were operared about 5000, 10000, and 4000 hrs. The unit cell used 1.8 mm thick matrix showed 0.85 V (at 150 mA/$cm^2$) as the intial performance and this cell voltage is not lower than the cell voltage obtained in the cell with 1 mm thick matrix. This cell was operated for 10000 hrs. The cell used 1.45 mm thick matrices showed 16.6 % in the electrolyte loss after 5000 hr operation. In the case of the cell with 2.3 mm thick matrix, the initial cell voltage was below 0.80 V (at 150 mA/$cm^2$). For thermal cycle test, the gas crossover amount of unit cell used 1.8 mm thick matrix was much less than that of the cell with 1.0 mm thick matrix.
A band stop filter is proposed with cascading unit cells that are based on a dual composite right/left-handed (D-CRLH) conductorbacked coplanar waveguide. The parameters of the unit cell have been analyzed to confirm the behavior of each component for the equivalent circuit of the cell. We simulated the dispersion characteristics and energy distribution and have determined that the unit cell has a D-CRLH property. The band stop filter was implemented by symmetrically cascading two of the proposed unit cells. The experimental results for the band stop filter revealed a band rejection performance of 32 dB and a return loss of 0.35 dB in the stopband frequency range from 869MHz to 954MHz. Finally, we show that there is a good agreement in the experimental results and those obtained through the simulations.
Metallic sandwich panels based on a truss core structure have been developed for a wide range of potential applications with their lightweight and multi-functionality. Structural performance of sandwich panels can be predicted from the studies on mechanical behavior of a unit cell of truss core structures. Analytical investigations on the unit cell provide approximated guidelines for the design of overall core structures for a specific application in short time. In this study, the effects of geometrical parameters on mechanical behavior of a pyramidal shape of unit cell were investigated with analytical models. The unit cell with truss member angle of 45 degree was considered as reference model and other models were designed to have the same weight and projected area but different truss member angle. All truss members were assumed to be connected with pin joint in analytical models. Under the assumptions, the equivalent strength and stiffness of the unit cell under compressive and shear loads were predicted and compared. And finally, the optimum core member angle to have maximum mechanical property could be calculated and verified with FE analysis results.
The research and development for the solid oxide fuel cells have been promoted rapidly and extensively In recent years. because of their high efficiency and future potential. The purpose of this research Is to Investigate the performance evaluation and unit cell fabrication for SOFC.
The optimum polymer gel electrolyte composition ratio was 23 : 66 : 11 wt% of P(VdF-co-HFP) : PVP =20 : 3), (PC: EC =44 : 22) and TEABF$_4$. And the optimal thickness of polymer gel electrolyte was 50 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The electrochemical characteristics result of unit cell were 31.41 Fig of specific capacitance, and 3.21$\times$10$^{-3}$ S/cm of ion conductivity. Ion conductivity of polymer gel electrolytes decreased according to added PVP through impedance analysis, and it was higher in 7 wt%, but electrochemical characteristics of unit cell were better in 3 wt% PVP. And for excellent ion conductivity of polymer gel electrolytes, the use of a thin layer electrolyte(20 $\mu\textrm{m}$) was an effective method, but with unit cell application, the best thickness was 50 $\mu\textrm{m}$. Unit cell showed higher capacitance and more stable electrochemical performance when hot pressed between polymer gel electrolyte and electrode. This results from enhancement of the physical contact between the electrode and the polymer gel electrolyte and good accessibility of the liquid electrolyte to the electrode surface.
