  • The purpose of this study is to estimation of pollutants loads using unit load method in Hong-bo watershed. In general, because river water quality management have been conducted with point source pollutant in our country, pollutants caused by precipitation have not been managed well so far. Especially the pollutants tends to concentrate in the reservoir of reclaimed land. Therefore, the reservoir of reclaimed land is need to continuous monitoring and update of an accurate data. also, It is need to improvement of environmental pollution. There are divide into nine sub-catchments and made an estimate of pollutants loads using unit load method in Hong-bo basin. The sample of data was during the 10 years.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the influence of pollutant loads on the water quality in the Goseong reservoir from May 2005 to October 2006. Annual total runoff at the Goseong-cheon watershed was 968.0 mm in 2005, 382.6 mm in 2006, respectively. The mean concentration of BOD, COD and SS in the stream were 2.28, 6.03, 46.97 mg/L in rainy seasons and 0.95, 2.14, 6.05 mg/L in dry seasons at SWT C sub-watershed. Total-N concentrations ranged from 2.60 to 3.18 mg/L at SWT C sub-watershed, which was generally higher than the quality standard of agricultural water (1.0 mg/L). Total-P concentrations ranged from 0.044 to 0.130 mg/L at SWT C sub-watershed. Measured pollutant loads in the SWT C sub-watershed were 36.7 kg/day of BOD, 72.3 kg/day of T-N and 2.3 kg/day of T-P in 2005 at SWT C sub-watershed, 63.9 kg/day of BOD, 82.8 kg/day of T-N and 1.1 kg/day of T-P in 2006 at SWT C sub-watershed, respectively. In the analysis of the effluent characteristics for NPS pollutants, it appeared that the loading rates of effluent from SWT C watershed were, respectively, BOD 62.3%, T-N 69.6%, T-P 71.1%, SS 70.1% during the rainy season in 2006. The calculated T-N daily pollutant loadings by the unit loading factor method from each sub-watershed were much greater than observed, but the calculated T-P daily pollutant loadings much lesser than observed.

  • The design flow considering nonstationarity is estimated to determine the design flood related to hydraulic structure quantitatively based on the design process for stream restoration in the Mokgamcheon watershed proposed by Lee et al. (2011). The purpose of this research is to suggest new ways that the design flood was calculated considering nonstationarity at the Mokgamcheon watershed. Storm-unit hydrograph method to calculate design flood and direct frequency analysis were applied and nonstationarity was considered for the frequency analysis through extRemes toolkit developed at NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research). Although the method of direct flood frequency analysis due to dealing with flowrates directly has a more reliable than strom-unit hydrograph method, as a result, the method of direct flood frequency analysis underestimated the design flood than strom-unit hydrograph method due to the characteristics of the flow data. Therefore, the flood of storm-unit hydrograph method (100 years frequency) was determined as the design flood in the Mokgamcheon watershed.

  • The allocation of margin of safety (MOS) at a uniform rate to all areas of the unit watershed makes it very difficult to keep the load allotment stable in the area for lack of reduction measures like forest land. This study developed an equation to calculate margin of safety differentially according to the regional characteristics. The equation was formulated on the basis of the regional characteristic factors such as a load contribution factor for land use type and a site conversion factor for the unit watershed. The load contribution factor represents a contribution of loads from a particular land use. The site conversion factor was derived from the site conversion ratio of a unit watershed. Margin of safety for the non-point pollution load in the land use sector decreased by 20~25% in three river basins. The margin of safety in the unit watersheds with low site occupation ratios decreased in high rate, while in the unit watersheds with large urban area decreased in low rate. With the application of the differential margin of safety considering regional characteristics, not only the reduction of pollution loads can become lighter but also it can be easier to develop plans for Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) even where the reduction measures are not available.

  • The curvilinear hydrograph can be replaced by an equivalent triangular hydrograph which is more easily constructed and, for routing through reservoirs or stream channels, gives results about as accurate as those obtained using the curvilinear hydrograph. A synthetic hydrograph is prepared using the data from a number of watersheds to develop a dimensionless unit hydrograph applicable to ungauged watersheds. The dimensionless unit hydrograph for the NakDong River Basin was prepared from the unit hydrographs of a variety of nine subwatersheds. The equation for the peak rate of flow (unit volume of runoff in 1.0mm) was derived as {{{{ { q}_{p } = { 0.21AR} over { {T }_{p } } }}}} The results summarized in this study are as follows: 1) It found that the watershed lag time (Lg, hrs) could be expressed by Lg=0.253(L.Lca)0.4171 The product L.Lca is a measure of the size and shape of the watershed. Correlation coefficient for Lg was 0.97 which defined with high significance. 2) The base length of the unitgraph, in hours, was adopted as Tb=17.51+2.073Lg with high significant correlation coefficient, 0.92. 3) Time in hour from start of rise to peak rate (TP) generally occured at the position of 0.289 Tb with some indication of higher values for larger watershed. 4) Triangular hydrograph is a dimensionless unitgraph prepared from the 40 unitgraphs. The equation is shown as {{{{ { q}_{p } = { K.A.R} over { { T}_{p } } }}}}. The constant K=0.21 is defined to NakDong River basin. 5) In the light of the results analyzed in this study, average errors in the peak discharge of the Trjangular unitgraph was estimated as 5.34 percent to the peak of observed average unitgraph. Each ordinate of the Triangular unitgraph was approached closely to the observed one.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of the pollutant discharge from non-point source and to estimate the unit loads of the pollutant discharge from the upper watershed of Seomjin Dam during rainy season. The upper watershed of Seomjin Dam is located in the middle of Jeonbuk province is formed two tributaries mainly. A sub-branch stream of those tributaries is Imsil stream of which flow rate is about 13% of the main stream of Seomjin reservoir normally. On the basis of measurement result in this study, the water quality of Imsil stream was fluctuated highly and the quantity of measured pollutant discharge was higher than the value calculated with the proportion of flow rate during dry season. On the contrary, during rainy season the mean values of flow rate and water quality were higher than the quartile according to the statistical analysis. That means rainfall can influence strongly on the water quality of the upper watershed of Seomjin reservoir. Among the several criteria of water quality, SS discharge was most sensitive to the flow rate variation of stream, which was fluctuated in proportion of rainfall, basically. It was evaluated the event mean concentration (EMC) of non-point source pollutants depending on rainfall events as well. Though the pollutant discharge unit of Imsil stream was lower than the main stream of Seomjin reservoir, the EMC value of Imsil stream was higher than the main stream of Seomjin reservoir.

  • The LDC (Load Duration Curve) method can analyze river water quality changes according to flow rate and seasonal conditions. It is also possible to visually recognize whether the target water quality is exceeded or the size of the reduction load. For this reason, it is used for the optimal reduction of TPLCs and analysis of the cause of water pollution. At this time, the flow duration curve should be representative of the water body hydrologic curve, but if not, the uncertainty of the interpretation becomes big because the damaged flow condition is changed. The purpose of this study is to estimate the daily mean flow of the unit watershed using the HSPF model and to analyze the difference of the flow duration curves according to the cumulative daily mean flow rate using the NSE technique. The results show that it is desirable to construct the flow duration curve by using the daily average flow rate of at least 5 years although there is a difference by unit watershed. However, this is the result of the water bodies at the end of Han River basin watershed, so further study on various water bodies will be necessary in the future.

  • The objective of this study is to establish a methodology of bioregional approach for coastal area management as a basis for planning and design. Focusing on the bioregional approach, this study reviewed currently prevailing approaches such as watershed approach and ecological unit approach for planning and management purposes. This research placed its geographical focus on the landward watershed of the Bay of Hampyong located in Chonnam Province, dealing efficiently with shortcomings of existing researches which mainly covered seaward tidal flats without considering outside effects. The main methods of the study are classified into indoor computerized map analysis and field work. For computer analysis, printed maps and digital maps have been analysed, and GIS techniques have been utilized for its synthesis and finalizations. Field work included on-site landscape analysis and verification of a tentative place unit boundary. As a practical step, criteria for classifying bioregion were presented and the selected criteria included : topography & water ways ; roads & administrative boundaries ; habitat types ; and visual enclosure. First, based on the data of topography and water ways, broad classification work was performed and corrections were made based on data drawn out from other criteria. A tentative place unit map was drawn and revised through field visits. This study encompassed an initial but integral part for bioregional approach in landward watershed management of a coastal area. As results of the study, the necessity and efficiency of bioregional approach which considers environmental and cultural components systematically have been presented.

  • Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) system was introduced to manage pollution load of watershed and to improve water quality of unit watershed so that it is possible to protect dringking water soureces. Load allocation observation is the most important factor in TMDLs system. Because if load allocation is not observed, it is difficult to achieve water quality goal of unit watershed. Also it is impossible to improve water quality of the drinking water sources. Therefore it is necessary to apply some kind of sanctions (penalty) in case of excess of load allocation. The sanctions have to be, however, applied differently based on various reduction plan types, i.e., using the reduction load planed in 2nd phase, delay the completion, additional reduction in 2nd phase, error of the pollution sources, etc. Moreover, the penalty load should be properly imposed, lest it should be overburden the provence. The reduction load trade inter province must be restrictively permmitted only the same unit watershed.

  • In this study, we developed the GIS-based Geomorpho-hydrological Watershed Modeling System($G^{2}WMS$) which could consider both nonlilear rainfall-runoff relationship based on Geomorpho-Climatic Unit Hydrograph(GCUH) as well as watershed system inducing river routing. The developed new model was calibrated at the gaged rainfall events at natural watersheds and previewed to apply at the ungaged mountain basins, such as Sulma basin for small mountain basin and Andong-Dam basin for large scale basin, compared single with partitioned basin in the observed unit hydrographs and rainfall-discharge events. Finally, at the large scale Andong dam basin, we concluded that partitioned basin cases which including th nonlinear GCUH and river routing methods were superior to single basins which including the traditional methods in rainfall-discharge simulation at the mountain basins.
