Optimization of three small-scale solar membrane distillation desalination systems

  • Membrane distillation (MD), which can utilize low-grade thermal energy, has been extensively studied for desalination. By incorporating solar thermal energy, the solar membrane distillation desalination system (SMDDS) is a potential technology for resolving the energy and water resource problems. Small-scale SMDDS (s-SMDDS) is an attractive and viable option for the production of fresh water for small communities in remote arid areas. The minimum-cost design and operation of s-SMDDS are determined by a systematic method, which involves a pseudo steady state approach for equipment sizing and the dynamic optimization using overall system mathematical models. The s-SMDDS employing three MD configurations, including the air gap (AGMD), direct contact (DCMD) and vacuum (VMD) types, are optimized. The membrane area of each system is $11.5m^2$. The AGMD system operated for 500 kg/day water production rate gives the lowest unit cost of $5.92/m^3$. The performance ratio and recovery ratio are 0.85 and 4.07%, respectively. For the commercial membrane employed in this study, the increase of membrane mass transfer coefficient up to two times is beneficial for cost reduction and the reduction of membrane heat transfer coefficient only affects the cost of the DCMD system.

  • The objective of this study is to develop an automatic object changer unit to improve processing problems existed in the conventional horizontal machining center. To achieve this goal, this study designed a horizontal transfer as the second project continued to the first project that designed a upward and downward traverse unit. A horizontal traverse unit shows a symmetric structure and consists of frame, which consists of four unit tools, motor and reducer, which are fixed at a frame, operation unit with pinions, first traverse unit, and second traverse unit. Constraint conditions based on the operation mechanism with these elements were configured and obtained following results after modeling a model for a traverse motor. In the kinematic expression of sliding motion with one degree of freedom, the sliding motion is constrained. Also, the rack 3 installed at a frame is used to configure possible kinematic constraint conditions of the rack 2 according to the rolling motion of the pinion 2 in the first traverse unit. In addition, the moment of inertia that is a type of kinetic energy in a converted horizontal traverse unit in the side of the reducer can be applied to introduce the moment of inertia of a converted horizontal traverse unit in the side of the reducer by using the sum of kinetic energy in the rack and pinion, which is a part of the horizontal traverse unit. Also, the equation of motion of the converted upward and downward traverse unit in the side of the motor using the equation of motion of the motor. Furthermore, the horizontal traverse unit predetermines the mass of the first and second traverse unit and applied load including the radius and reduction ratio of the pitch circle in the pinion 1 and applied load to the rack 2. Then, a proper motor can be determined using several parameters in the upward and downward traverse unit in order to verify such predetermined specifications. In future studies later this study, a simulation that verifies the results of the previous two stages of studies using a finite element method.

Effects of Uphill Exercise on Digestible Energy Intake and Energy Expenditure during Exercise in Yearling Horses

  • The objectives of this study were to evaluate the digestible energy intake and energy expenditure in yearling horses on different training protocols (uphill- and level-track exercise training protocols). Twenty-four thoroughbred yearlings (12 males and 12 females, aged 27.0$\pm$0.9 months) were divided into two groups based on their training on two different tracks: the uphill (with a gradient of about 3%) training group (uphill training) and the level training group (level training). The digestible energy (DE) intake and energy expenditure (EE) during exercise were measured in both the groups. It was found that the DE intake in the uphill training and the level training groups was 5.1$\pm$3.1 and 36.9$\pm$4.8 Mcal/day, respectively. The EE during exercise in the two groups was 3.05$\pm$0.51 and 2.07 $\pm$0.56 Mcal, respectively. Thus, there was a significant difference in the EE (p<0.05), but not in the DE intake between the animals of the two training groups. The EE for a given intensity of exercise was greater in the uphill training group than in the level training group, but the DE intake was not affected by the exercise intensity. The DE intake was not generally affected by the intensity of exercise in this study, but a daily negative gain of body weight was observed in the uphill training group, particularly in the females. Thus, the energy requirement may be higher in yearlings undergoing uphill training than in those undergoing level training.

SNG 생산용 공기분리공정의 공기 재 압축비에 따른 민감도 분석 (Simulation and Sensitivity Analysis of the Air Separation Unit for SNG Production Relative to Air Boosting Ratios)

  • 심랭식 공기분리공정은 공기를 액화시켜 질소와 산소, 아르곤 등 다양한 산업가스를 생산하며, 가스생산조건(순도, 종류)에 따라 공정 또한 달라진다. 그 중 SNG 플랜트 공급용 공기분리공정은 99.5% 이상의 초고순도 산소 생산을 요구하기 때문에 공정의 효율이 타 공기분리공정에 비해 떨어지며, 공정효율을 낮추는 요인에는 공기압축에 의한 소모동력이 대표적이다. 본 연구에서는 SNG 플랜트에 적용하는 공기분리공정의 에너지 효율 향상을 위하여 소모동력과 관련된 공기 압축 설비의 민감도 분석을 수행하였다. 민감도 분석을 위해 ASPEN PLUS를 이용해 공기분리공정을 모사하였다. 모사 결과, 99.5% 이상의 산소 18.21 kg/s를 생산하였으며, 33.26 MW의 동력이 소모되었다. 모사된 공정 중 공기압축설비는 주 압축기 1대와 2대의 재 압축기가 있으며, 2대의 재압축기에서의 공기압축비 변화에 따른 고압질소, 저압산소, 저압질소의 유량과 순도에 대한 영향과 공정 내 소모동력 변화에 대해 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 99.5% 산소, 99% 질소(고압), 90% 질소(저압)를 생산하기 위한 최적의 운전조건은 재압축비가 각각 0.48, 0.50가 되었으며, 재압축비 조정 후 $0.507kWh/O_2kg$에서 $0.473kWh/O_2kg$으로 소모동력도 약 7%가량 줄었음을 확인하였다.

  • 연료전지와 수소를 사용하는 연료전지 자동차의 상용화를 위해서는 수소 공급용 수소 스테이션(hydrogen station)의 개발이 중요한 핵심 기반기술이다. 일반적으로 수소 스테이션은 탈황반응, 개질반응(reforming), 수성가스전환(WGS) 반응 및 수소분리(PSA) 장치로 구성된 수소제조 공정과 압축, 저장 및 분배 장치로 구성된 후처리(post-treatment) 공정으로 구성되어 있다. 본 총설에서는 수소 경제(hydrogen economy) 사회로의 진입을 위해 국내외에서 연구개발 중인 수소 스테이션에 대한 연구 개발 동향과 전망을 고찰하였다. 그리고 향후 풍력 및 태양열 등 재생 가능 에너지(renewable energy)원으로부터 물의 분해에 의한 수소제조 기술이 확립되기 전까지는 화석연료의 개질 반응이 수소를 제조하는 핵심기술이 될 것으로 판단된다. 따라서 화석연료의 탈황반응, 화석연료의 개질 반응에 의한 수소제조, CO 농도 저감을 위한 수성가스 전환반응 및 수소의 분리기술 등 수소 스테이션의 상용화에 필수적인 단위공정개발에 대한 최근의 연구동향을 정리하였다.

Continuous Cell-Free Protein Synthesis Using Glycolytic Intermediates as Energy Sources

  • In this work, we demonstrate that glycolytic intermediates can serve as efficient energy sources to regenerate ATP during continuous-exchange cell-free (CECF) protein synthesis reactions. Through the use of an optimal energy source, approximately 10 mg/ml of protein was generated from a CECF protein synthesis reaction at greatly reduced reagent costs. Compared with the conventional reactions utilizing phosphoenol pyruvate as an energy source, the described method yields 10-fold higher productivity per unit reagent cost, making the techniques of CECF protein synthesis a more realistic alternative for rapid protein production.

Effects of Probiotic-vitacogen and β1-4 Galacto-oligosaccharides Supplementation on Methanogenesis and Energy and Nitrogen Utilization in Dairy Cows

  • The effects of probiotic-vitacogen and galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) supplementation on methanogesis, energy and nitrogen utilization in replacement dairy cows were evaluated. A basal diet comprising orchardgrass hay, lucerne hay cube and concentrate (2:2:1, DM basis) were fed with or without supplements to four cows at $80g\;DM/kgBW^{0.75}$per day in a $4{\times}4$ Latin square arrangement. The four treatments were; 1) basal diet, 2) basal diet plus 100 g probiotic-vitacogen, 3) basal diet plus 50 g GOS, 4) basal diet plus 50 g GOS and 100 g probiotic-vitacogen. Nutrient apparent digestibility was not altered by the effect of supplementation. Nitrogen intake was significantly (p<0.001) higher for the two vitacogen-supplemented diets compared to control and GOS supplemented diets. However, vitacogen supplemented diets had numerically higher fecal and urinary nitrogen losses, thereby, having lower nitrogen retention compared to control and GOS supplemented diets. Gross energy intake was also significantly (p<0.05) higher for vitacogen-supplemented diets compared to control and GOS diets, however, due to higher losses in feces, urine, methane and heat, GOS supplemented diet had numerically higher energy retention. There was an 11% reduction in methane emission (liters/day) in GOS supplemented diet compared to control diet. However, the combination of GOS with vitacogen resulted in an increased methane emission. When expressed per unit of animal production (g/kg live-weight gain), methane production tended to be lower in vitacogensupplemented diets compared to control and GOS diets. The supplementation of replacement dairy cows with GOS reduced methane emission (liters/day), while, vitacogen supplementation reduced methane emission per unit animal production. The two feed supplements may contribute to the abatement of methane as a greenhouse gas.

식량 안정생산기술의 전망 (Prospects of Stable Production Technologies for Food Crops)

  • The major problems of food crop cultivation in Korea are low yield of most crops except rice. inefficient cultivation techniques for aged farmers. and low international competibility. Therefore, development of cultivation techniques of food crops should aim the yield. quality improvement, labor reduction and production cost. The primary issue for increasing the yield of soybean, barely and wheat is to reduce the yield gap between the farmer's yield and recommended ones of experiment station. More advanced cultivation techniques needs to be developed. and/or the conventional breeding methods to be reconsidered. The newly developed labor-saving mechanized technique needs to reduce labor hours , and the cost of agricultural implements and machineries. In other words the labor-saving mechanized technique should be developed based on the improvement of total farming system as well as systemic fundamental innovation of cultural methods. The efficiency of solar energy use in food production of Korea in 1997 is as low as $0.52{\%}$ so there is much room to increase yield. It is recommendable that the concept of food Production should be changed to energy Producing efficiency Per unit area basis from volume and weight of food materials. Moreover, introduction of resonable cropping system is needed to increase yield of main crops, farmer's income, solar energy use efficiency, and decrease of land service expenditure. Current cropping system emphasized on economic crops. especially in vegetables , is not desirable for resonable use of arable land. stability of agricultural management and staple food crop self-sufficiency ratio. It is desirable to increase food crops . that are energy of carbohydrate and protein rich and land dependent crops. in cropping system. And the agronomist should develop the cultural methods to replace food crops for food self-sufficiency and stable farming management instead of economic crops in current cropping system. Low-input and environmentally-sound crop cultivation techniques, especially nitrogen-reducing culture technique which is directly related to food crop quality, also needs to be developed urgently. The extended cultivation of corn in upland and barely and wheat in lowland as a feed stuffs is recommended to prevent further decrease of food self-sufficiency ratio, which is mainly caused by the high reliance on imported feed grain. It is also considered that the calculation and presentation methods of standard agricultural income needs to be improved. The current calculation method uses unit land area of 10a regardless of crop kinds , characteristics of agricultural management and cultivation scale. So, it is apt to lead misunderstanding of farm income value. Therefore. it should show an income of average farmers for certain number of years. Research and developing system for food producing is not desirable because they are conducted currently individual crop and mono-culture basis. But actual agricultural income is usually earned by cropping system including upland and lowland. For example. the barley and wheat is usually cultivated in double cropping system. The cooperation among research institutes such as university agribusiness. government and farmers is indispensible. The public information and education on importance and consumption habit of food crops is necessary in Korean society to increase food self-sufficiency through nationwide cooperation.

폐목재 자원화 방법 환경편익 분석 (Analysis of environmental benefit of wood waste recycling processes)

  • 폐목재를 자원화하는 방법은 물질재활용과 에너지재활용으로 분류된다. 물질재활용은 폐목재를 원료로 파티클보드 또는 MDF를 생산하는 것 등이 포함되며 분리배출 및 수집을 통해 수차례 재활용이 가능한 장점이 있다. 에너지재활용은 칩을 제조하여 열병합발전 또는 보일러의 원료로 에너지를 생산하는 것을 말한다. 화석연료를 사용하는 발전소, 보일러 등에서 기존의 연료(석유, 화석연료 등)를 폐목재로 대체하면 화석연료 구입비용과 폐목재를 폐기물로서 처리하는 비용을 절감할 수 있다. 본 연구는 폐목재를 원료로 하여 파티클보드 생산공정과 열병합 에너지 생산공정을 전과정평가의 방법으로 지구 온난화에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 폐목재 1톤을 사용하여 파티클보드 생산공정은 112kg의 온실가스 를 배출하며, 열병합에너지공정은 382kg의 온실가스를 배출하는 것으로 분석되었으며, 분석조건은 파티클보드의 평균수명 14년과 재활용회수 16회를 가정하였고, 이때 임시적 탄소저장능을 고려하였다.

현장 타설 콘크리트의 단위수량 측정 및 관리 개선 방안 제시 (A Proposal for Improving the Measurement and Management of Unit Water Content in In-Situ Concrete)

  • 본 연구에서는 국내외 단위수량 규정을 조사하고 현장 타설 콘크리트의 단위수량을 평가하였다. 콘크리트 품질을 타이틀로 하여 핵심 단어 시각화했을 때 단위수량이 높은 중요도를 가짐을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 단위수량 관리 및 단위수량 측정 방법에서 한국과 일본 간 상대적으로 큰 차이가 나타나지 않음을 알 수 있었다. 현장에 반입된 콘크리트의 단위수량을 단위용적질량법을 이용하여 계산한 결과, 현장에서 임의로 채취한 샘플에서 단위수량이 불균일하고 가변적이며, 단위수량이 적정 단위수량 기준을 초과하는 결과를 확인할 수 있었다. 현장 타설 콘크리트의 품질관리를 위해서는 레미콘 업체, 건설업체, 검사관이 단위수량에 대한 엄격한 기준을 준수하는 것이 중요하며, 명확한 단위수량 측정 매뉴얼 제공과 철저한 교육, 주기적인 현장 점검 등 보다 체계적이고 실용적인 시스템 구축이 필요하다고 판단된다.
