  • We compared intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) treatment plans with commercially available multileaf collimators (MLCs) of different leaf width for intracranial lesions. Twelve cases previously treated with micro-MLCs(mMLCs) were replanned using the Varian 120 and 80 MLCs. These collimators have minimum leaf width of 3mm, 5 mm and 10 mm at isocenter, respectively. These three plans were compared with respect to the uniformity and the conformity indices, doses to normal tissue. For the uniformity index of planning target volume (PTV),there was no statistically significant difference between mMLCs with 120 MLCs (p = 0.06). However, there was a little difference between mMLCs with 80 MLCs (p = 0.001). Maximum target dose to the PTV showedno dependency with respect to the leaf width. On the contrary, there were statistically significant differences in the conformity indices between mMLCs and 120 MLCs (p = 0.003) and between mMLCs and 80 MLCs (p = 0.003).The volumetric increments for MLCs with leaf widths of 5 mm and 10 mm were 6.3% and 23.2% for the normal tissue Irradiated to = 50% dose, and 8.7% and 32.7% for the normal tissue Irradiated to = 70% dose, respectively, compared to the volume for MLCs with leaf width of 3 mm. This shows that for the sparing of normal tissue, MLCs with leaf width of 3 mm are more effective, compared to MLCs with leaf widths of 5 mm and 10 mm.

  • Purpose: To compare desimetrically intensity-modulated radiotherapy treatment plans with commercially available multileaf collimators (MLCs) of different leaf width for intracranial lesions. Materials and Methods: Twelve patients with intracranial lesions were treated with BrainLAB's micro-MLCs (mMLCs) and performed with the BrainSCAN ver. 5.2 planning software. They were replanned using the Varian 120 and 80 MLCs. These collimators have minimum leaf width of 3 mm, 5 mm and 10 mm at isocenter, respectively. PTV was $3.3~339.2\textrm{cm}^3$ and the number of beams was 3~7. These three plans were compared with respect to the uniformity and the conformity indices, doses to critical organ and normal tissue. Results: For the uniformity index of the planning target volume (PTV), there were no statistically significant differences between mMLCs and 120 MLCs (p=0.057) and between 120 MLCs and 80 MLCs (p=0.388). However, there was a difference between mMLCs and 80 MLCs (p<0.001). Maximum target dose to the PTV showed no dependency with respect to the leaf width. On the contrary, there were statistically significant differences in the conformity indices between mMLCs and 120 MLCs (p=0.003), between mMLCs and 80 MLCs (p=0.003) and between 120 MLCs and 80 MLCs (p=0.003). The volume of brainstem irradiated to $\geq$70% dose and to $\geq$50% dose was increased as the leaf width of MLCs increased. In particular, the volume of normal tissue irradiated is obviously changed for different leaf width. Volumetric increments for MLCs with leaf widths of 5 mm and 10 mm were 6.3% and 23.2% to the normal tissue irradiated to $\geq$50% dose, and 8.7% and 32.7% to the normal tissue irradiated to $\geq$70% dose, respectively, compared to the volume for MLCs with leaf width of 3 mm. Conclusions: The uniformity index and maximum target dose to the PTV showed no dependency with respect to leaf width of MLCs. However, the conformity index was improved as the leaf width decreased. For the sparing of normal brain tissue, treatment plans with MLCs of 3 mm leaf width is more effective, compared to ones with MLCs of 5 mm and 10 mm leaf widths.

  • To improve the flow and mixing characteristics of marine SCR system, two different mixer including up-down and swirl type mixer were considered. The purpose of this study is to analyse turbulence intensity and uniformity index in detail and to improve the performance of SCR with respect to the mixer structure. The results showed that, the concentration uniformity index is improved by about 5% with the utilization of both mixers in the front of catalyst part. Although the RMS value and relative turbulence intensity increased after the up-down type mixer, it could observed that the value of two parameters decreased with the flow proceeding forward to the downstream. For the case of swirl type mixer, the decrease of RMS value and relative turbulence intensity were relatively smaller than that of up-down type mixer, and uniform distribution of relative turbulence intensity was observed. As a results, it could be concluded that the mixing effects and the distance of the two kinds of mixer were different.

  • This study presents the characteristics of a pressure drop and uniformity index for a particulate matter reduction device with a perforated plate and mixer for marine diesel engines. The perforated plate and mixer equipped on the particulate matter reduction device induce an increase of exhaust gas reduction performance by increasing the uniformity index. Whereas, the perforated plate induces pressure drop increases in the particulate matter reduction device. Therefore to calculate the effect of the uniformity index and pressure drop of the perforated plates and mixer, this study combines several cases using five types of perforated plates and one type of mixer. Consequently, these results were analyzed to determine the optimized type and position of the perforated plate and mixer.

  • 36,000lbs porcelain insulators (D-1995, D-1997, D-2002) investigated mechanical and electrical qualities, which were installed in the Korea 154kV transmission lines. This paper assessed Weibull distribution function, quality index, and uniformity index to forecast the remaining life expectancies of insulators. Applying Weibull distribution function on year lapse change test, electro-mechanical failing load test, and HRB values confirmed a significant degree of correlation. Statistically calculating the life expectancy through quality indices for aging and new products and uniformity indices that are associated with uniformity of insulation materials revealed.

  • SAI(Secondary Air Injection) system has been studied widely as one of the promising countermeasure for reducing HC emission at cold start. In this paper, in order to find out the optimal position of SAI, computational thermal fluid analysis on exhaust system adapted SAI system is performed using commercial 3-D CFD code, CFX. The present results showed that SAI position strongly affected the uniformity of air distribution in front of catalyst. And also through the decision process of optimal position of SAI, new index, uniformity of air distribution($U_{\phi}$) is proposed to define it quantitively. Because $U_{\phi}$ is very simple equation and similar with flow uniformity, it is very easy to figure out the physical meaning and to apply it to practices. Finally, we applied the index $U_{\phi}$ to the decision process of the optimal position of SAI, so that we could get the clear comparison results.

  • Diesel engines have the advantages of higher thermal efficiency and lower CO2 emissions than gasoline engines, but have the disadvantages that particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions are greater than those of gasoline engines. In particular, nitrogen oxides (NOx) emitted from diesel engines generates secondary ultrafine dust (PM2.5) through photochemical reactions in the atmosphere, which is fatal to humans. In order to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx), pre-treatment systems such as EGR, post-treatment systems such as LNT and Urea SCR have been actively studied. The Urea SCR consists of an injection device injecting urea agent and a catalytic device for reducing nitrogen oxides (NOx). The nitrogen oxide (NOx) reduction performance varies greatly depending on the urea uniformity in the exhaust pipe. In this study, spray characteristics according to the spray hole structure were confirmed, and the influence of spray uniformity on spray characteristics was studied through engine evaluation.

  • Lack of the space in many diesel vehicles make it difficult to design and install the catalytic muffler to reduce emissions. For this reason, inlet part of the catalytic muffler is made of L-type which has lower flow uniformity than conventional I-type, and catalytic muffler has complex internal structure by various insertions, which affect the flow uniformity and pressure drop of the systems. In this work, the flow characteristics such as flow uniformity and pressure drop have been numerically investigated by changing such various geometries as inlet shape, porosity, and outlet shape inside the muffler with the three-dimensional turbulent incompressible flow solver. Total 4 different cases are considered in order to find optimal configurations of the catalytic muffler in view of high flow uniformity and low pressure drop. The results show that Case 2 which has no induction cone and outlet perforated pipe has higher uniformity index and lower pressure drop than others considered in this work.

  • In recent year, as the current and future emission regulations go stringent, the research of exhaust manifold and CCC has become the subject of increasing interest and attention. This study is concerned with the systematic approach to improve catalyst flow uniformity and light-off behavior through the basic understanding of exhaust flow characteristics. Computational approach to the unsteady compressible flow for exhaust manifold of 4-1 type and 4-2-1 type and CCC system of a 4-cylinder DOHC gasoline engine was performed to investigate the flow distribution of exhaust gases. In this study, through calculation, the effects of geometric configuration of exhaust manifold on flow structure and its maldistribution in monolith were mainly investigated to understand the exhaust flow patterns in terms of flow uniformity. Based on the design guidance resulting from this fundamental study, the flow uniformity of 4-2-1 type exhaust manifold demonstrated the more improved exhaust characteristics than that of the 4-1 type one.

  • Dispersion munitions are often equipped with dispersive submunitions used to scatter bombs over a wide area, and one of the types of dispersive submunitions is the Magnus rotor, commonly referred to as a self-rotating flying body. The Magnus rotor is designed to be dispered over a wide area by utilizing the principle of the Magnus effect through self-rotation, and has various trajectories depending on the initial conditions from the mother dispersion munition. In this paper, an index to evaluate the dispersion uniformity of footprint of the dispersive submunition is presented and the dispersion uniformity according to various initial release conditions is evaluated, and it is getting larger with high incidence angle and get max value at certain initial angular velocity.
