Seawater intake systems have significant problems due to seawater pollution, suspended solids, unstable intake and maintenance etc. An underground type seawater intake system was newly developed to overcome the existing weaknesses and was facilitated in Gyukpo port. In this study, to check the performance of the new system, the samples for water quality and the 3-D numerical modeling test were conducted. The five times test included the COD, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, pH, and suspended solid for the intake system. The analyses show that the COD, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, PH showedminor changes before and after. On the other hand, the change in suspended solids was significant and water was purified below 5 mg/l, first level fisheries water, after. The numerical model adopted the RNG $k-{\epsilon}$ algorithm and the CFX model based on the finite volume method. The porosity algorithm was used to reproduce filtered-sand, outer diameter, and thickness. The numerical results showed that the double pipe is advantageous in that it provides a uniform pressure between the inner and outer pipe for the flow to be stable. In addition, the use of multiple intake pipes did not interfere with the discharge reduction of 0.98 at the both intake pipes compared with the central intake pipe.

Physical properties and textural parameters of thirty-five piston tore samples recovered from the southeastern coast of Korea (Korea Strait), were investigated using the autopycnometer. The physical properties (porosity, water content, wet bulk density, dry bulk density, gram density, and void ratio) were measured at rather uniform intervals along each core. Sediment texture (grain size, sand, silt, and clay contents) was also measured at the same subbottom depth. The measured and calculated results are; mean grain size $0.57\~8.09\phi(average:3.67\phi)$, porosity $26\~81\%\;(average:\;55\%)$, water content $16.7\~61.4\%(average:\;31.6\%)$, wet bulk density $1.37\~2.18g/cm^3\;(average:\;1.85g/cm^3)$, dry bulk density $2.55\~3.11g/cm^3\;(average:\;2.35g/cm^3)$, grain density $2.40\~3.10g/cm^3\;(average:\;2.85g/cm^3)$, and void ratio $0.56\~2.54$ (average: 0.94). The sediment texture generally coincides well with the bathymetry indicating the influence of Pleistocene-Holocene sea level changes. Also the contours of physical properties are closely related to the sediment texture. Fluctuation of physical properties are similar to the textural variation. It seems that sediment texture is a significant factor in determining physical property in this study area.

As a part of basic studies on monitoring of landslides and slope stability using SP measurements, micro-electric potentials of rock samples were measured accompanied with the rock failure by a uniaxial loading test were measured. The measurement system consists of a 8 channel A/D converter with 24 bit resolution, uniaxial loading tester, strain gages and 4 sets of electrode attached to a rock sample. Rock samples of granite, limestone, and sandstone were tested. Also, mortar samples were tested in order to monitor electric-potentials of a uniform sample. Micro-electric potentials were detected in all saturated samples and the strength of them increased as the loading force increased. Sandstone samples showed the largest strength of micro-electric potential and it followed limestone and granite samples, which indicates a positive relationship with porosity of rocks. The mechanism generating these micro-electric potential can be explained in terms of electro-kinetics. In case of dry samples, micro-electric potential could be observed only in sandstone samples, where piezoelectric effect played main role due to high contents of quartz in sandstone samples. We found that biggest micro-electric potentials were observed at the electrodes near the crack surface of rock samples. This is very encouraging result that SP monitoring can be applied to predicting landsliding or to estimate collapsing position combining with monitoring of acoustic emissions.

In this study, glassy carbon coating was performed on the graphite using a phenolic resin and a curing agent was mixed with ethylene glycol as an additive to form the uniform surface. The phenolic resin was dried and cured under the environments of hot air, then converted into a glassy carbon layer by pyrolysis at 500~1,500℃. FTIR, XRD, SEM analysis, and density/porosity/contact angle measurement were performed for characterization of glassy carbon. The pyrolysis temperature for high-quality glassy carbon was optimized to be about 1,000℃. As the content of the additive increased, the effect of reducing surface defects on the coated surface, reduction of porosity, increase of contact angle, and increase of density were investigated in this study. The method of forming a glassy carbon coating layer through an additive is expected to be applicable to graphite coating and other fields.
Polyancrylonitrile nanofiber membrane (PAM) was prepared by using the electrospinning method with a solution of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) in DMF. The pore-diameter of PAMs and the number of PAM's layer were controlled for the microfiltration (MF) application. In addition, in order to improve the water-flux, AN-PEGMA copolymers have been synthesized via free radical polymerization with poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate and azobisisobutylronitrile (AIBN), and then PAN/AN-PEGMA nanofiber membranes (PAM/APM) were prepared by electrospinning with a mixture of PAN (9 wt%) and AN-PEGMA (3 wt%) in DMF (88 wt%). The prepared membranes were investigated with FT-IR and E.D.S. It was confirmed through scanning electron microscope (SEM), porometer, and porosity analysis that the porous membrane with a uniform diameter (400~600 nm) and a uniform pore characteristics (0.5~0.4 ${\mu}m$) was prepared. For the MF application, water-flux measurements were investigated and then the result was shown that the water permeability value of PAM/APMs introduced AN-PEGMA copolymers was relatively higher than that of the PVdF commercial membrane. From these results, PAN nanofiber membranes prepared by electrospinning could be utilized as a MF membrane.

Electrostatic precipitator that shows a good performance for the removal of particulate matter is important for controlling emissions from industrial facilities and power plants. The efficiency of the electrostatic precipitator on the removal of particulate matter is highly affected by the flow pattern inside the electrostatic precipitator. A number of studies have been conducted to obtain uniform flow distribution inside electrostatic precipitators. An electrostatic precipitator (ESP) with a length of 3.5 m and a height of 0.875 m was designed and installed in this study. The ESP included an inlet duct, diffuser, body, and contractor. Three perforated plates were installed in the diffuser of the ESP. Five pitot tubes were installed vertically and used to measure flow distribution in the cross section of the ESP body. Root mean square deviation value (RMS%) was used to examine the flow distribution inside the ESP when the perforated plates were installed in the diffuser. Flow distribution was also investigated in relation to the porosity of the perforated plate. The results showed that the perforated plates improved greatly the flow distribution inside the electrostatic precipitator. In addition, the most uniform flow distribution was found with 40%, 50%, and 50% porous perforated plates located from the inlet of the diffuser.

This paper investigates the impact of fiber dispersion on the internal structure and mechanical strength of SiCf/SiC composites manufactured using spread SiC fibers. The fiber volume ratio of the specimen to which spread SiC fiber was applied decreased by 9%p compared to the non-spread specimen, and the resin slurry impregnated between the fibers more smoothly, resulting in minimal matrix porosity. In order to compare the fiber dispersion of each specimen, a method was proposed to quantify and evaluate the separation distance between fibers in composite materials. The results showed that the distance between fibers in the spread specimen increased by 2.23 ㎛ compared to the non-spread specimen, with a significant 42.6% increase in the distance between fiber surfaces. Furthermore, the 3pt bending test demonstrated a 49.3% higher flexural strength in the spread specimen, accompanied by a more uniform deviation in test data. These findings highlight the significant influence of SiC fiber dispersion on achieving uniform densification of the SiCf/SiC matrix and increasing mechanical strength.

In general, a sintered rod is used as a feed in the growth of crystals by the floating zone(FZ) method. The sintering condition of the feed rod affected the stability of molten zone because it influenced the interface shape between the feed and the melt during the crystal growth. In this study, rutile and ruby crystals were chosen as samples to analyze the effect of the microstructures of the feed rods. In sintering of the feed rod for the growth of rutile and ruby single crystals, the difference of grain size between the inner and the outer region of the feed rod increased with the sintering temperature and dwelling time. As a result, it altered melting behavior of the feed. The uniform grain size of the sintered rod was necessary for the optimum growing condition of crystals. The effect of pores in the feed rod was not a dominant factor to grow crystals by the FZ method, which was confirmed by growing crystals with nonsinterd rods as feeds.

Cylindrical type ceramic filers, that is 60 O.D$\times$10t$\times$600L and 60 O.D$\times$10t$\times$1,000L were manufactured by vacuum forming processes using ceramic ray materials. For cylindrical type ceramic filters, porosity and bulk density were measured for, 80 to 90% and 0.3 to 0.4 g/㎤, respectively at uniform pore size of 41 to 45${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Bench scale candle filters (60$\psi$$\times$10t$\times$600L) were tested using different dusts collected from many industries including chemical processing, glass processing and metal manufacturing pants. Collection efficiencies found out to range from 99.87% to 99.90%, while resistance coefficients from 1.1$\times$10(sup)11/$m^2$ to 1.7$\times$10(sup)11/$m^2$ . Full scale low density ceramic filters (60$\psi$$\times$10t$\times$1,000L) were also tested at 1 atm, $600^{\circ}C$ to reveal the filtration efficiency, conditioning, and resistance coefficients using two different types of dust as chemical processing and metal refined processing. Darcys law resistance coefficients were measured to range 1.44$\times$10(sup)11/$m^2$ to 2.74$\times$10(sup)11/$m^2$, and collection efficiencies on the range 99.84 to 99.96%, Finally, results of long term performance test showed that filters were conditioned after 170hrs. Experimental conditions for effective filtration were examined under the condition 10 cm/sec face velocity, 3kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ pulsing pressure, 5 min filtration cycle, and 300msec pulse opening time.
