Porous ceramics have the advantages of low density, low thermal conductivity, and excellent mechanical properties. Among porous ceramic manufacturing methods, the replica template method allows the easy manufacturing of porous filters with the highest porosity and pores of the desired size, but it also has the disadvantage that the resulting filters have low mechanical strength. To overcome this shortcoming, mullite (3Al2O3·2SiO2) whiskers, which have excellent thermal stability and high mechanical strength, were introduced in porous ceramic structure. The mullite whiskers were synthesized using a composition of Al2O3, flyash and MoO3. The morphologies and crystal structures of the mullite whiskers with MoO3 contents were investigated in detail. When the porous ceramic with mullite whiskers was fabricated using 20 wt% MoO3 catalyst the most uniform microstructure was obtained, and the mullite whiskers showed the highest aspect ratio of 47.03. The porosity and compressive strength of the fabricated porous ceramic were 82.12 % and 0.83 MPa, respectively.
This paper presents an analytical hyperbolic theory based on the refined shear deformation theory for mechanical stability analysis of the simply supported advanced composites plates (exponentially, sigmoidal and power-law graded) under triangular, trapezoidal and uniform uniaxial and biaxial loading. The developed model ensures the boundary condition of the zero transverse stresses at the top and bottom surfaces without using the correction factor as first order shear deformation theory. The mathematical formulation of displacement contains only four unknowns in which the transverse deflection is divided to shear and bending components. The current study includes the effect of the geometric imperfection of the material. The modeling of the micro-void presence in the structure is based on the both true and apparent density formulas in which the porosity will be dense in the mid-plane and zero in the upper and lower surfaces (free surface) according to a logarithmic function. The analytical solutions of the uniaxial and biaxial critical buckling load are determined by solving the differential equilibrium equations of the system with the help of the Navier's method. The correctness and the effectiveness of the proposed HyRPT is confirmed by comparing the results with those found in the open literature which shows the high performance of this model to predict the stability characteristics of the FG structures employed in various fields. Several parametric analyses are performed to extract the most influenced parameters on the mechanical stability of this type of advanced composites plates.

This study compares the quartzites of four quartzite units: The Fagfog Quartzite, Dunga Quartzite (member of the Robang Formation), Pandrang Quartzite (member of the Kalitar Formation) and the Chisapani Quartzite. The analysis shows variations in flakiness and elongation, as the Fagfog Quartzite displays low flakiness whereas the Pandrang and the Chisapani have moderate and the Dunga Quartzite has shown variations. The density values of the four quartzite units remain consistent, indicating uniform physical properties and porosity levels. However, bulk density values differ among the quartzites, suggesting variations in particle arrangement, porosity, and density. Regarding strength measures, the Pandrang and the Chisapani Quartzite have higher strength characteristics as compared to the Fagfog and the Dunga Quartzites. The Pandrang Quartzite has the highest average point load strength index, classifying it as "Extremely Strong". The resistance to impact and crushing forces varies among the quartzites, with lower Aggregate Impact Value (AIV) and Aggregate Crushing Value (ACV) indicating higher strength and durability. Durability tests show that the Fagfog Quartzite has high durability against slaking, with a slight decrease observed after the fifth cycle. The Dunga Quartzite shows varying degrees of weathering, while the Pandrang and the Chisapani Quartzite have minimal weight changes, indicating strong resistance to weathering. Magnesium sulfate soundness tests indicate high durability and resistance to degradation for all four units. The Los Angeles abrasion value (LAAV) tests indicate favorable resistance to abrasion for the majority of the Fagfog, Dunga, and the Pandrang Quartzites samples, while Chisapani Quartzite shows more variability in LAAV values. The Pandrang Quartzite shows a higher proportion of elongated particles but lower flakiness index values as compared to Fagfog and Dunga Quartzites while Chisapani Quartzite stands out with a significantly higher presence of flaky particles and lower elongation index values. Mechanically, the Fagfog and Dunga Quartzite show higher strength and better resistance to abrasion and freeze and thaw. The Pandrang Quartzite shows moderate resistance to crushing and sudden effect, while the Chisapani Quartzite has variable resistance to effect. This comparative study emphasizes the diversity and complexity of quartzite rock types, showing the need for comprehensive characterization and assessment to determine their suitability for specific applications.

Although the electrophoretic deposition method has the advantage of simple processing procedure, less fabrication facilities, and easier control for deposition thickness and wire length, providing economical and technical merits, it also has the disadvantages of cracking and porosity phenomena, requiring an improved processing method for higher particle density and constant particle orientation. we have developed an optimization method to increase the particle density and to unify its orientation, and have performed a study to overcome the cracking and porosity problems in the fabricated superconductor. In order to improve the surface uniformity and the conduction properties of the fabricated YBCO thick films, a system that applies alternate voltage vertically has been developed for the first time and applied to the electrophoretic deposition process. The applied alternate electric field caused a force to be exerted on each YBCO particle and resulted in a rotation of the particle in the direction of applied electric field, accomplishing a uniform particle orientation. We name this process as the shaky-aligned electrophoretic deposition method. For commercial utilization and efficiency, in this dissertation, alternating voltage of 60 Hz and 25 ∼ 120 V/cm was proposed to apply it as a subsidiary source for shaky-flow deposition so that the fabricated thin film showed uniform surface morphology with less voids and cracks and Tc,zero of 90 K and the critical current density of 3419 A/$cm^2$.
We estimated the hydraulic conductivity of the sediments using constant-head permeability tests and electrical resistivity measurements with Jumoonjin standard sand of a uniform size and glass beads of different grain sizes. In this study, we determined the variations of the porosity, the hydraulic conductivity, and the resistivity in case 1 (changing the packing of the Jumoonjin standard sand) and in case 2 (varying the size of the glass beads). The results of case 1 showed that the hydraulic conductivity decreased with an increase in the electrical resistivity. This occurred because the sand grain while packing became rhombohedral with the a decrease of both the pore size and porosity. The results of the case 2 showed that the hydraulic conductivity increased due to the increase in the pore size as caused by the increased glass bead size. In addition, the porosity decreased and the electrical resistivity increased. Therefore, the relationship between the hydraulic conductivity and the electrical resistivity is negatively proportional as regards the grain packing with a change from cubic to rhombohedral whereas this relationship is positively proportional to the increase in the grain size.
In this study, we conducted the study of the merits and demerits of the laser flash and the divided-bar methods for measuring the thermal conductivity of rocks and investigated applicability of the divided-bar apparatus which was developed by KIGAM. The laser flash method can measure thermal diffusivity, specific heat capacity, and thermal conductivity of rocks with even small thickness (< ~3 mm) in the high temperature range($25-200^{\circ}C$) in non-contact mode. For the laser flash method, samples must be uniform and homogeneous. In the case of the divided-bar method, the apparatus measures only thermal conductivity of rock samples at the room temperature. We measured thermal conductivities of 12 rock samples with low density and high porosity using two methods. In the laser flash method, there exist potential errors caused by the effect of pulse dispersion and reflection by various minerals and porosity in rock samples; the difference in thermal conductivity values measured on the front surface and the opposite surface ranges from 0.001 to 0.140 W/mK with the standard deviation of 0.003~0.089 W/mK, which seems to be caused by heterogeneity of rock samples. On the contrary, the divided-bar apparatus shows stable thermal conductivity measurements and relatively small measurement errors; the difference in thermal conductivity values, just as we applied to the laser frash method, is 0.001~0.016 W/mK with the standard deviation 0.001~0.034 W/mK. In turn, the divided-bar method can be applied to more thick samples that are more representative of bulk thermal conductivity.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of crumb rubber recycled from used tires as a soil incorporation and topdressing materials on a trafficked Korean lawngrass‘Zenith’(Zoysia japonica). In Exp 1, incorporation treatments included three particle sizes (PS: coarse =4∼6.35 mm, medium =2∼4 mm, and One : less than 2 mm in diameter) and two incorporation rate (IR: 10 and 20%). Wear treatments were applied 30 passes per day by compactor weights being 60 kg with soccer shoes. Topdressing treatments included three PS and two topdressing depth (TD: 5 and 10 mm). Wear treatments were the same as described in Exp 1. In Exp 1, the treatment with medium PS+IR 20 resulted in the tendency to have high total clipping yield. There was no significant difference in clipping yield, turfgrass visual color, coverage, and root length among the treatments. Compared to control, tissue Zn levels increased about 6.5-fold by the treatments. The treatment with fine PS +IR 20 caused a less peak deceleration than coarse PS +IR 10. Total porosity, air-filled porosity, and capillary porosity increased with fine PS +IR 20. In Exp 2, compared to controls, however, there was a difference in turfgrass visual color after the termination of traffic treatment. There was no difference in root length. The treatment with fine PS + TD 10 resulted in the highest total clipping yield. As a result of soil physical analysis, soil penetration resistance was reduced by the treatments. The treatment with coarse PS resulted in a less peak deceleration than fine PS. In conclusion, turfgrass growth was increased by crumb rubber incorporation which enhanced soil physical properties. The crumb rubber topdressing was able to cushion the crown tissue area while still providing a smooth and uniform surface, improve overall turfgrass quality, and reduce compaction.

Low pressure casting process for unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced aluminum (UD-CF/Al) composites which is an infiltration route of molten Al into porous UD-CF preform has been a cost-effective way to obtain metal matrix composites (MMCs) but, easy to cause non-uniform fiber distribution as CF clustering. Such clustered CFs have been a problem to decrease the density and thermal conductivity (TC) of composites, due to the existence of pores in the clustered area. To obtain high thermal performance composites for heat-sink application, the relationship between fiber distribution and porosity has to be clearly investigated. In this study, the CF distribution was evaluated with quantification approach by using two-dimensional spatial distribution method as local number 2-dimension (LN2D) analysis. Note that the CFs distribution in composites sensitively changed by sizes of Cu bridging particles between the CFs added in the UD-CF preform fabrication stage, and influenced on only $LN2D_{var}$ values.

A numerical study has been carried out to investigate the flow and heat transfer from an aluminum foam heat sink in a confined channel. A uniform heat flux is given at the bottom of the aluminum foam heat sink, which is horizontally placed on the heated surface. The channel walls are assumed to be adiabatic. Cold air is supplied from the top opening of the channel and exhausted to the channel outlet. Comprehensive numerical solutions are acquired to the governing Wavier-Stokes and energy equations, using the Brinkman-Forchheimer extended Darcy model and the local thermal non-equilibrium model f3r the region of porous media. Details of flow and thermal fields are examined over wide ranges of the principal parameters; i.e., the Reynolds number Re, the height of heat sink h/H, porosity $\varepsilon$and pore diameter ratio $R_{H}$.

In this study, hyaluronic acid (HyA) - Gelatin (Gel) hydrogels were prepared at ratio of 15:85 with the goal of obtaining a high uniform porosity and porous biocompatibility scaffold for bone tissue engineering applications. In order to develop a proper scaffold for bone implant application, a HyA-Gel hydrogel loaded in sponge Biphasic Calcium Phosphate (BCP) was prepared. To assay the cytocompatibility and cell behavior on the HyA-Gel hydrogel and HyA-Gel/BCP scaffold, cell attachment and spreading of MSCs seeded on the scaffolds were studied. An invivo study was performed for HyA-Gel/BCP scaffolds after 1 and 3 months implantation. Our results provide a novel and simple method to obtain an adequate scaffold for osteoblast cells and indicate that HyA-Gel hydrogel and HyA-Gel/BCP scaffold could be a good candidate for bone tissue engineering scaffolds.
