Closed-form and numerical solution of the static and dynamic analysis of coupled shear walls by the continuous method and the modified transfer matrix method

  • This study investigates the static and dynamic structural analysis of symmetrical and asymmetrical coupled shear walls using the continuous and modified transfer matrix methods by idealizing the coupled shear wall as a three-field CTB-type replacement beam. The coupled shear wall is modeled as a continuous structure consisting of the parallel coupling of a Timoshenko beam in tension (with axial extensibility in the shear walls) and a shear beam (replacing the beam coupling effect between the shear walls). The variational method using the Hamilton principle is used to obtain the coupled differential equations and the boundary conditions associated with the model. Using the continuous method, closed-form analytical solutions to the differential equation for the coupled shear wall with uniform properties along the height are derived and a numerical solution using the modified transfer matrix is proposed to overcome the difficulty of coupled shear walls with non-uniform properties along height. The computational advantage of the modified transfer matrix method compared to the classical method is shown. The results of the numerical examples and the parametric analysis show that the proposed analytical and numerical model and method is accurate, reliable and involves reduced processing time for generalized static and dynamic structural analysis of coupled shear walls at a preliminary stage and can used as a verification method in the final stage of the project.

  • The reflection coefficients of monochromatic water waves over various shear currents flowing on a constant topography are estimated analytically in this study. The region of varying shear currents is represented by a finite number of tiny steps with a uniform depth topography. The proper numbers of steps and evanescent modes needed for the analysis are proposed by a series of convergence tests. The characteristics of reflection coefficients for various shear currents conditions are also examined.

  • Effect of spherodization of cementite on static and dynamic deformation behaviors of SCM415 steels was investigated in this study. Dynamic torsional test was conducted using torsional Kolsky bar with the strain rate of $1.6{\times}10^3/s$. Three type of specimens were used with different spherodization degree of cementite. Dynamic test results were analyzed comparing with static tensile results and microstructural changes. The obtained results are as follows; 1) All the specimens of static and dynamic tests showed a ductile fracture mode of dimple. Specimens of the dynamic test showed adiabatic shear bands on the beneath of fracture surface. 2) In static tensile test, decreased tensile strength and increased uniform and non-uniform elongations appeared as spherodization degree of cementite increased. 3) In dynamic torsional test, decreased shear strength and increased uniform elongation appeared as spherodization degree of cementite increased. 4) Due to the largest uniform elongation, superior cold forgeability at high speed is expected on high spherodization degree of cementite.

  • Parametric resonance of shear deformable composite skew plates subjected to non-uniform (parabolic) and linearly varying periodic edge loading is studied for different boundary conditions. The skew plate structural model is based on higher order shear deformation theory (HSDT), which accurately predicts the numerical results for thick skew plate. The total energy functional is derived for the skew plates from total potential energy and kinetic energy of the plate. The strain energy which is the part of total potential energy contains membrane energy, bending energy, additional bending energy due to additional change in curvature and shear energy due to shear deformation, respectively. The total energy functional is solved using Rayleigh-Ritz method in conjunction with boundary characteristics orthonormal polynomials (BCOPs) functions. The orthonormal polynomials are generated for unit square domain using Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization process. Bolotin method is followed to obtain the boundaries of parametric resonance region with higher order approximation. These boundaries are traced by the periodic solution of Mathieu-Hill equations with period T and 2T. Effect of various parameters like skew angle, span-to-thickness ratio, aspect ratio, boundary conditions, static load factor on parametric resonance of skew plate have been investigated. The investigation also includes influence of different types of linearly varying loading and parabolically varying bi-axial loading.

  • The plate under shear loading umformly distributed on the end portions of its side boundary was considered. Infinite hyperbolic serieses and Fourier serieses were combined as a stress function and from which exact solutions for the 15 cases for the parameters of b/L=0.25, 0.5, 1.0 and l/L=0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0 are obtained. In each cases the first 5 terms of the infinite series at the 36 points as shown in Fig. 3. The results are presented in Fig. 4-1, 4-2, and 4-3. The conclusions are as follows: 1) The stresses ${\sigma}_x$ increase very slightly as $\chi$ increases in the range of 0<x<L-l 2) When the parameters satisfy the conditions b/L<0.25 and l/L<0.2, the stresses in the region of 0<x<L-l can be obtained by replacing the uniform shear loading by the equivalent uniform shear loading by the equivalent uniform tensile force and pure bending moment at x=l. 3) The stress ${\sigma}_y$ is negligible throughout the region. 4) When the parameter b/L varies, the stresses ${\sigma}_x$ and u vary as L/b, while strain $\upsilon$ varies as $(L/b)^2$.

Optimal Conditions of Aerosol Flow Generation for High-density and Uniform Fog Screen (고밀도 균일 안개스크린을 위한 에어로졸 유동의 최적 생성조건)

  • The fog screen is a device projecting the media to the aerosol flow field. As major parameters to generate dense and steady fog screen, shear stress, optical blockage ratio and SMD were obtained result through experiment. The micro droplet was generated by the piezo oscillation element, and the aerosol flow mixed with an air flow was sprayed into the vertical direction from the top of the fog screen through the 280 mm slot. For produce a dense, uniform fog screen, the shear effect, optical blockage ratio and SMD between aerosol and air curtain were measured. The minimum and maximum shear stress conditions were selected and it was confirmed that the optical transmission deviation of the aerosol flow field was small when the aerosol and air curtain flow rates were changed. When the aerosol and air curtain flow power were 18 V (1.51 m/s) and 24 V (2.55 m/s), respectively, under the condition of the minimum shear stress and laminar flow, the optical blockage ratios with the spray length were small, and it produced a most stable and high density uniform fog screen by injecting a constant of $10{\mu}m$ or less.

  • The shear behavior of reinforced concrete beams subjected to uniform loading was investigated by testing 1/3 small-scale model R/C beams. The emphasis was placed in finding a fundamental difference in behavior between in uniformly loaded beams and in point loaded beams. The major variable was the span-to-depth ratio, varying from 4 to 12. The concrete strength and steel ratio were fixed.

  • Shear stress is one of the most important mechanical factors used in various fields and is important for the design of artificial channels. Current shear stresses have been used in the past, but there are factors that are difficult to actually measure or calculate, such as bed shear stress and energy slope in the equation used. In particular, the energy slope is a very difficult factor to estimate, and it is difficult to estimate the slope and flow velocity of the boundary layer although the energy slope can be used to obtain the shear stress distribution. In addition, the bed shear stress among the shear stress distribution is very difficult to measure directly, and the research is somewhat slower than the velocity. In this study, we have studied the simple calculation of the average flow velocity and the shear stress distribution using entropy M without reflecting the energy gradient, and we used existing laboratory data to demonstrate the utility of the applied equation. The stress distribution in the graphs was comparatively analyzed. In the case of the uniform flow and the non-uniform flow, the correlation coefficient was almost identical to 0.930-0.998.

  • In this study. an experiment has been performed to investigate distributions of static pressure around a circular cylinder in a uniform shear flow which is made by a specially designed wind tunnel. From the computation program(BLAYER), various boundary layer value are obtained depending on the shear flow rate. It is basical design data that boundary layer flow phenomenon of nuclear power plant heat exchanger tube surroundings. airfoil. and others flow fields.

  • Vibration analysis of embedded functionally graded (FG)-carbon nanotubes (CNT)-reinforced piezoelectric cylindrical shell subjected to uniform and non-uniform temperature distributions are presented. The structure is subjected to an applied voltage in thickness direction which operates in control of vibration behavior of system. The CNT reinforcement is either uniformly distributed or functionally graded (FG) along the thickness direction indicated with FGV, FGO and FGX. Effective properties of nano-composite structure are estimated through Mixture low. The surrounding elastic foundation is simulated with spring and shear constants. The material properties of shell and elastic medium constants are assumed temperature-dependent. The motion equations are derived using Hamilton's principle applying first order shear deformation theory (FSDT). Based on differential cubature (DC) method, the frequency of nano-composite structure is obtained for different boundary conditions. A detailed parametric study is conducted to elucidate the influences of external applied voltage, elastic medium type, temperature distribution type, boundary conditions, volume percent and distribution type of CNT are shown on the frequency of system. In addition, the mode shapes of shell for the first and second modes are presented for different boundary conditions. Numerical results indicate that applying negative voltage yields to higher frequency. In addition, FGX distribution of CNT is better than other considered cases.
