  • Analysis of radiation heating system for producing 60" size PDP panels was carried out using $RADCAD^{TM}$ software. Optimum arrangement of infrared heating elements was found to obtain uniform temperature distribution in PDP panel during heating. Heating capacity of each heater was determined to obtain an appropriate maximum panel temperature. Parametric study to find the effect of design parameters such as the thermophysical and optical properties of glass and cooling system was carried out. As a reference system, about 35 kW heating capacity was chosen to obtain about 800 K maximum panel temperature after 30 minute heating. The maximum temperature difference in panel was below 20 K. The maximum/minimum and its difference in the panel were very sensitive to the variation of the emissivity of glass and cooling block.

  • In order to investigate the cooling and heating characteristics of a variable-capacity system A/C using a digital scroll compressor, the cooling and heating capacities and EER are measured by the psychrometric calorimeter. The capacity of the system is controlled by the digital scroll compressor, which is operated by controling PWM valve and the loading vs. unloading time. When the system A/C is operated under the cooling and heating standard conditions, EER is nearly uniform but cooling capacity and heating capacity increase at minimum, rated and maximum modes. When the auxiliary heater is on, at the cold region, the system A/C produces the excellent heating capacity.

  • The purpose of this study is to select a conductive resistor as high energy efficiency through analysis of the heating properties by induction heating. The result of this study, the heating properties is capable of weaken cementitious joint in 10~30 seconds when using the conductive resistor with wire mesh or punching metal. Although the steel is higher temperature than SUS304, SUS304's heating properties are more uniform.

  • Induction heating is utilized in a large and ever-increasing number of application. The most prominent of these are billet heating, heat treating, metals joining, and metal melting. In these day, heating roll, a kind of induction heating, is widely used in curing of coatings and fiber industry. We designed and manufactured heating roll that in order to distribute uniform temperature on the roll's surface. Then Heating roll's characteristic analysis was studied and performed the test of temperature distribution.

  • Purpose: Radio frequency (RF) heating is a promising thawing method, but it frequently causes undesirable problems such as non-uniform heating. This can occur because of the food shape, component distribution, and initial temperature differences between food parts. In this study, RF heating was applied to the thawing of cylindrically shaped pork sirloin by changing the shape of electrodes and the surrounding temperature. Methods: Curved electrodes were utilized to increase the thawing uniformity of cylindrically shaped frozen meat. Pork sirloin in the shape of a half-circle column was frozen in a deep freezer at $-70^{\circ}C$ and then thawed by RF heating with flat and curved electrodes. In order to prevent fast defrosting of the food surface by heat transfer from air to the food, the temperature of the thawing chamber was varied by -5, -10, and $-20^{\circ}C$. The temperature values of the frozen pork sirloin during RF thawing were measured using fiber-optic thermo sensors. Results: After multiple applications of curved electrodes resembling the food shape, and a cooled chamber at $-20^{\circ}C$ the half-cylindrically shaped meat was thawed without surface burning, and the temperature values of each point were similarly increased. However, with the parallel electrode, the frozen meat was partially burned by RF heating and the temperature values of center were overheated. The uniform heating rate and heat transfer prevention from air to the food were crucial factors for RF thawing. In this study, these crucial factors were accomplished by using a curved electrode and lowering the chamber temperature. Conclusions: The curved shape of the electrode and the equipotential surface calculated from the modeling of the parallel capacitor showed the effect of uniform heating of cylindrically shaped frozen food. Moreover, the low chamber temperature was effective on the prevention of the surface burning during RF thawing.

  • Heating films were prepared with composites of poly (methyl methacrylate) and conductive graphite. The as-prepared composite was deposited on a PET film and then fabricated using a bar coater to produce a film with uniform thickness. Copper electrodes were attached to both ends of the as-prepared film, and the heating characteristics of the film were analyzed while applying a DC voltage. The electrical conductivity and heating temperature of the heating films depended on the size, structure, content, and the dispersion characteristics of the graphite in the composite. The thermal energy was adjusted by controlling the electrical energy, based on the Joule heating theory. The electrical resistance of the film was altered in proportion to Ohm's law, and the heating temperature was changed according to the structure of the film (interelectrode spacing or electrode length) and the conductive graphite content. When the content of conductive graphite in the film increases, the electrical resistance decreases, and the heating temperature increases; however, there is no significant change above a certain content (50%).

  • The oxy-fuel combustion heating characteristics is investigated experimentally by measuring furnace and steel temperature variations for batch type furnace simulator with a specially designed low NOx oxy-fuel burner. Economics of using oxy-fuel combustion is confirmed and, the furnace and steel temperature variations for different heating conditions are compared to deduce optimal heating control pattern for energy savings and rapid uniform heating. High $CO_2$ concentration (> 80-90%), low NOx (< 40ppm) and CO (< 10ppm) are measured in the flue gas. Temperature differences (< $30^{circ}C$) inside the furnace and steel are reduced relatively by increasing the burner jet momentum.

  • An analysis has been carried out to investigate the effect of the reflectivity on the temperature distribution of a glass panel by infrared radiant heating. Halogen lamps are used to heat the panel, located near the top and bottom of the rectangular chamber. The thermal energy is transferred from the lamps to the panel only by radiation and it is considered by using view factor. The conductive transfer is limited inside the panel. The results show that the uniformity of the temperature distribution of the panel is improved and, at the same time, the time for heating increases as the wall reflectivity increases. The temperature difference between the center and the corner reaches a maximum in the early stage of the heating process and then decreases until it reaches a uniform steady-state value.

  • High molecular weight of polycarbonate(PC) and well dispersed PC/MMT nanocomposites were successfully prepared through the novel technology, microwave solid-state polymerization. In our studies, the microwave irradiation is more effective than conventional oil-bath heating on achieving the high molecular weight and uniform nanocomposites. Using the polycarbonate prepolymer made it possible to intercalate the short chains into the galleries of MMT more easily. And it was observed that prepared nanocomposites by microwave solid-state polymerization have more uniform dispersion of silicate of MMT into the polymer matrix than by oil heating.
