Unidirectional Flow: A Survey on Networks, Applications, and Characteristic Attributes

  • Studies and applications related to unidirectional flow are gaining attention from researchers across disciplines in the recent years. Flow can be viewed as a concept, where the material, fluid, people, air, and electricity are moving from one node to another over a transportation network, water network, or through electricity distribution systems. Unlike other networks such as computer networks, most of the flow networks are visible and have strong material existence and are responsible for the flow of materials with definite shape and volume. The flow of electricity is also unidirectional, and also share similar features as of flow of materials such as liquids and air. Generally, in a flow network, every node in the network participates and contributes to the efficiency of the network. In this survey paper, we would like to evaluate and analyze the depth and application of the acyclic nature of unidirectional flow in several domains such as industry, biology, medicine, and electricity. This survey also provides, how the unidirectional flow and flow networks play an important role in multiple disciplines. The study includes all the major developments in the past years describing the key attributes of unidirectional flow networks, including their applications, scope, and routing methods.

  • Synchronization of unidirectional identical FitzHugh-Nagumo systems coupled in a ring structure under ionic and external electrical stimulations is investigated. In this network, each neuron is only connected and transmit signals to its next neuron via synaptic strength called gapjunctions. Adaptive control theory and Lyapunov stability theory are used to propose a unique control scheme with necessary and sufficient conditions which guarantee the synchronization of the neuronal network. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed scheme is shown through numerical simulations.

  • The accurate prediction of User Equipment (UE) paths in wireless networks is crucial for improving handover mechanisms and optimizing network performance, particularly in the context of Beyond 5G and 6G networks. This paper presents a comprehensive evaluation of unidirectional and bidirectional recurrent neural network (RNN) architectures for UE path prediction. The study employs a sequence-to-sequence model designed to forecast user paths in a wireless network environment, comparing the performance of unidirectional and bidirectional RNNs. Through extensive experimentation, the paper highlights the strengths and weaknesses of each RNN architecture in terms of prediction accuracy and computational efficiency. These insights contribute to the development of more effective predictive path-based mobility management strategies, capable of addressing the challenges posed by ultra-dense cell deployments and complex network dynamics.

  • There are two types of protection switching : a) automatic switching and b) forced switching. The switching mechanism is generally realised by OAM functions, therefore, the required OAM information field should be reserved in the PLOAM cells. This paper proposes an unidirectional and a bidirectional protection switching method and potential advantages. The unidirectional protection switching method can be faster than the bidirectional method because the unidirectional method does not require an APS protocol for protection switching. The bidirectional protection switching method uses APS K1 byte and K2 byte, which is included in octets of a PST message through downstream or upstream PLOAM cells, for protection switching. As making comparisons between the unidirectional and the bidirectional protection. switching method, this paper proposes an effective constructing method for ATM-PON network.

Dynamic Reverse Route for On-Demand Routing Protocol in MANET

  • Route establishment in Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) is the key mechanism to a successful connection between a pair of source and destination nodes. An efficient routing protocol constructs routing path with minimal time, less routing overhead and capable of utilizing all possible link connectivity. In general, most on-demand MANET routing protocols operates over symmetrical and bidirectional routing path, which is infeasible due to the inherent heterogeneous properties of wireless devices. Simulation results show that the presence of unidirectional links on a network severely affect the performance of a routing protocol. In this paper, a robust protocol independent scheme is proposed, which enable immediate rediscovery of alternative route for a path blocked by a unidirectional link. The proposed scheme is efficient; route rediscovery is locally computed, which results in significant minimization of multiple route packets flooding. Nodes may exploit route information of immediate neighbors using the local reply broadcast technique, which then redirect the control packets around the unidirectional links, therefore maintaining the end-to-end bidirectional connection. The proposed scheme along with Ad Hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) and AODV-Blacklist routing protocol is investigated over three types of mobility models. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme is extremely reliable under poor network conditions and the route connectivity can be improved by as much as 75%.

  • It is discussed how to locate idle vehicles of AGVS on unidirectional guide paths. The problem is modeled as a median location problem on a cyclic network. The characteristics of the optimal location are analyzed and some useful properties are suggested to reduce the solution space. Based on the properties found, several special types of networks - a pure single-loop type, the loop type with a single branching intersection and the loop type with local branching node - are also analyzed as well as the general cyclic network. In each case of the networks, a solution procedure is suggested. Some numerical examples are provided to illustrate the algorithms developed.

Design and Implement A Hybrid WebRTC Signalling Mechanism for Unidirectional & Bi-directional Video Conferencing

  • WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) is a technology that enables browser-to-browser communication. Therefore, a signalling mechanism must be negotiated to create a connection between peers. The main aim of this paper is to create and implement a WebRTC hybrid signalling mechanism named (WebNSM) for video conferencing based on the Socket.io (API) mechanism. WebNSM was designed over different topologies such as simplex, star and mesh. Therefore it offers several communications at the same time such as one-to-one (unidirectional/bidirectional), one-to-many (unidirectional) and many-to-many (bi-directional) without any downloading or installation. In this paper, WebRTC video conferencing was accomplished via LAN and WAN networks, including the evaluation of resources in WebRTC like bandwidth consumption, CPU performance, memory usage, Quality of Experience (QoE) and maximum links and RTPs calculation. This paper presents a novel signalling mechanism among different users, devices and networks to offer video conferencing using various topologies at the same time, as well as other typical features such as using the same server, determining room initiator, keeping the communication active even if the initiator or another peer leaves, etc. This scenario highlights the limitations of CPU performance, bandwidth consumption and the use of different topologies for WebRTC video conferencing.

  • 실제적인 이동 Ad Hoc 망에서는 단말의 비대칭성이나 무선환경 특성으로 인해 단방향 링크가 존재할 수 있다. 그러나 현재 Zone 라우팅 프로토콜이외의 기존의 이동 Ad Hoc 라우팅 프로토콜은 양방향 링크들만을 지원하도록 구현되어 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 가장 대표적인 라우팅 프로토콜인 DSR(Dynamic Source Routing) 프로토콜이 단방향 링크를 포함하는 이동 Ad Hoc 망에서 구동될 수 있도록 동적 소스 라우팅을 이용한 새로운 단방향 라우팅 프로토콜을 제안한다. 단방향 링크 상에서 효율적으로 구동하기 위해서 제안한 단방향 라우팅 프로토콜은 새로운 경로발견 및 경로유지 방법을 사용하였다. 성능평가를 위해서 미국 버클리 대학의 NS-2 시뮬레이터 프로그램에 제안한 내용을 코드로 삽입시켰으며, 성능평가 파라미터를 얻기 위해 카네기멜론 대학에서 제공한 이동 패턴파일과 연결 패턴파일을 조합하여 사용하였다. 성능평가 항목으로 데이터수신율 및 평균경로 설정시간을 고려하였으며, 제안된 3가지 경로설정 방식들에 대해 비교·평가하였다.

일방향 AGV 시스템 설계를 위한 시뮬레이터 개발 (Development of Simulator for Designing Unidirectional AGV Systems)

  • 생산시스템의 유연성과 효율성을 동시에 만족시키기 위한 자재취급 시스템으로써 AGV 시스템을 사용한다. AGV 시스템은 전체 생산시스템의 성능을 결정하는 중요 요인으로써 최적 설계안의 도출이 필수적이다. 일반적으로 상용 시뮬레이션 소프트웨어를 이용하여 AGV 시스템 설계 검증이 이루어지고 있지만, 이러한 검증 과정을 신속히 처리하기 위한 일련의 절차에 대한 개발이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 근사최적화된 일방향 흐름 경로와 다양한 운영 파라미터를 고려할 수 있는 일방향 AGV 시스템 시뮬레이터의 아키텍처를 제시 및 개발 하였다. 개발된 AGV 시스템 시뮬레이터는 Java를 기반으로 개발되었으며, 타부탐색을 이용한 근사최적 일방향 네트워크 설계를 지원하고, 사용자가 쉽게AGV 시스템의 설계 검증 및 대안분석에 사용할 수 있도록 개발되었다. 사용자의 시스템 설계 운영 정보는 입력창을 통해 입력되며 이 정보는 레이아웃 생성기, AGV 운영계획 생성기, 통합 AGVS 생성기로 구성된 시뮬레이션 엔진에서 자동으로 AGV 시스템을 모델링 및 시뮬레이션을 하여 빠른 시간 안에 시뮬레이터 사용자에게 피드백을 제공한다.

이중 모드 스윗칭 억세스 프로토콜을 이용한 고속 근거리 통신망의 성능평가 (Performance Evaluation of a High-Speed LAN using a Dual Mode Switching Access Protocol)

  • In this paper, a new high-speed local area network using a dual mode switching access (DMSA) protocol implemented on a dual unidirectional bus is described. By utilizing the implicit positionalordering of stations on a unidirectional bus, the proposed system switches between random access mode and the token access model withoug unnecessary delay. Therefore, unlike other hybrid systems such as Buzz-net and Z-net, DMSA does not show a rapid degradation in performance as the load increases. We obtain the average channel utilization and the average access delay by using a simplified analytic model. The numerical results obtained via analysis are compared to the simulation resuls for a partial validation of the approximate model. The performance characteristics of DMSA are superior delay-throughput characteristics at light and medium loads, compared to compared to other LAN systems, and the capability of providing a single active station with full capabity of the channel.
