  • The underwater acoustic communication has been widely applied to various objects such as ocean exploration-development and military affairs. And recently for embodiment of the communication system that is installed in a submarine and underwater work system, many studies have been progressing. This scope of the main studies in the meantime. It made it possible for a diver and a scuba diver who arc difficult to notice the situation of the outside because of staying in the water to hear a sound through a small speaker by using a ultra sound transducer that a central frequency is 32KHz after modulation of a voice to give the information of the outside. Also in case of happening an emergency to a diver in the water, it made him/her ask for help to a person in the outside by pressing a key and send a letter data to a person in the outside by using a keyboard. Through this system, it is possible to send a voice or data between the underwater and the outside and it is available to a diver or skin scuba diver.

  • An Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based wireless communication system has drawn wide attention for its high transmission rate and high spectrum efficiency in not only radio but also Underwater Acoustic (UWA) applications. Because of the narrow sub-carrier spacing of OFDM, orthogonality between sub-carriers is easily affected by Doppler effect caused by the movement of transmitter or receiver. Previously, Doppler compensation signal processing algorithm for Desired propagation path was proposed. However, other Doppler shifts caused by delayed Undesired signal arriving from different directions cannot be perfectly compensated. Then Receiver Bit Error Rate (BER) is degraded by Inter-Carrier-Interference (ICI) caused in the case of Multi-path Doppler channel. To mitigate the ICI effect, a modified Delay and Doppler Profiler (mDDP), which estimates not only attenuation, relative delay and Doppler shift but also sampling clock shift of each multi-path component, is proposed. Based on the outputs of mDDP, an ICI canceling multi-tap equalizer is also proposed. Computer simulated performances of one-tap equalizer with the conventional Time domain linear interpolated Channel Transfer Function (CTF) estimator, multi-tap equalizer based on mDDP are compared. According to the simulation results, BER improvement has been observed. Especially, in the condition of 16QAM modulation, transmitting vessel speed of 6m/s, two-path multipath channel with direct path and ocean surface reflection path; more than one order of magnitude BER reduction has been observed at CNR=30dB.

  • In this paper, short-range underwater wireless communication technique using visible LEDs is proposed. As an alternative to conventional acoustic system, visible LED communications show high quality and high speed data transmission characteristics. We design a frequency modulation-based optical wireless audio transmission system. The CD4046B phase-locked loop device is applied to implement the frequency modulation and demodulation. With a transmission modulation of 100 kHz, audio signal has successfully received at a transmission distance of 30 cm.

  • In this paper we analyzed the performance of data transmission using BFSK modulation. The system performances were evaluated by the experiments in water tank. As a result we showed the influences of reverberation due to the multipath. In order to simplify the experiment procedure the channel coding etc. were omitted. The experimental result shows that the maximum transmission data rate in used water tank is about 800 bps. We also verified that the reverberation effect m reduced using a deconvolution with a measured channel impulse response. This method improved the bit rate by about 100 bps than simple noncoherent demodulator at bit error rate of 10/sup -3/.

  • Underwater acoustic communication channel is often defined as a multipath fading channel since the multipath arrivals from various paths interfere with each other and cause frequency dependent constructive or destructive interference in received signals. Therefore signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of received signal fluctuates as a function of frequency. In addition, sea surface fluctuation induces frequency dependent time variant signal fading due to coherent component variation of surface bounce path. The frequency shift keying (FSK) system is known to be less sensitive and more robust under these interference and fading, and M-ary frequency shift keying (MFSK) system is adopted to increase a data rate. In this study, a bit error rate (BER) of 4 channels 4FSK system are examined in shallow sea multipath channel. Experimental results show that RS code reduces efficiently the BER of 4FSK system since frequency dependent time-varying fading is characterized to give burst errors. The BER of a different data rate or different source-to-receiver range depends on not only the channel coherent bandwidth but also frequency dependent multipath fading.

  • In this paper an inter-layer protocol, referred to as a Multi-Network Selector (MNS) is proposed for multiband maritime networks. A MNS is located between the data-link layer and the network layer and performs vertical handover when a ship moves another radio network. In order to provide seamless data transfer to different radio networks, the MNS uses received signal strength (RSS) and ship's location information as decision parameters for vertical handover, which can avoid ping-pong effect and reduces handover latency. In addition, we present related issues in order to implement the MNS for a multiband maritime network.

  • This paper verifies the performance of Extended Kalman Filter(EKF) and MCL(Monte Carlo Localization) approach to localization of an underwater vehicle through experiments. Especially, the experiments use acoustic range sensor whose measurement accuracy and uncertainty is not yet proved. Along with localization, the experiment also discloses the uncertainty features of the range measurement such as bias and variance. The proposed localization method rejects outlier range data and the experiment shows that outlier rejection improves localization performance. It is as expected that the proposed method doesn't yield as precise location as those methods which use high priced DVL(Doppler Velocity Log), IMU(Inertial Measurement Unit), and high accuracy range sensors. However, it is noticeable that the proposed method can achieve the accuracy which is affordable for correction of accumulated dead reckoning error, even though it uses only range data of low reliability and accuracy.

  • Nowadays, maritime communication systems need high data rate, reliability, and consistency in order to equivalently provide navigating ships with diverse multimedia services as in terrestrial communication systems. For this purpose, we conceptualize and design the maritime network for ships equipped with a multiband communication system which cost-effectively supports multimedia services according to several radiofrequency bands, such as HF, VHF, and satellite frequencies. We also introduce two service scenarios targeted for the maritime network; ship multimedia service (SMS) and real-time maritime logistics location tracking (RML2T). In addition, we specify related works according to three lower network layers (i.e., physical, data-link, and network layers) upon designing the network.

  • Long-range communication in deep waters must overcome the low data rate due to limited bandwidth. This paper presents the performance of Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) system to increase the data rate. In MIMO system, communication performance is degraded by crosstalk between users and an adaptive passive Time Reversal Processing (TRP) is widely used to eliminate this. In October 2018, long-range underwater acoustic communication experiment was conducted in deep water (1,000 m ~) off the east of Pohang, South Korea. During the experiment, a vertical line array was utilized and communication signals modulated by binary phase shift keying and quadrature phase shift keying with a symbol rate of 512 sps were transmitted. To generate MIMO communication signals, received signals from ranges of 26 km and 30 km is synthesized. Compared to the conventional passive TRP, the adaptive passive TRP eliminates the crosstalk between users and achieves error-free performance with an increase of output signal-to-noise ratio. Therefore, two users separated by 4 km in range achieves an aggregate data rate of 1,024 symbols/s.

  • Studies applying multiple carrier method such as OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) or FMT(Filtered Multi-Tone) to Underwater acoustic communication(UAC) system are actively under way as UAC is utilized in the various fields and the demand of high speed data transmission increases. In the existing OFDM method, the use of virtual carrier, which is inserted not to affect the adjacent channel in the frequency domain, and the cyclic prefix, which is used to reduce the impact of Inter Symbol Interference and Inter Channel Interference, decrease the throughput. In particular, the length of cyclic prefix to be used becomes longer under water since underwater has a rapidly changing channel characteristic, and the data throughput diminishes because it has to allocate more subcarrier on virtual carrier. This study therefore suggests FMT-OFDM system, a combination of OFDM and FMT, for the purpose of enhanced throughput in the underwater channel environment. Besides, in this study, channel is modeled based on data measured in real sea and the performance is analyzed after setting system parameters.
