  • The underwater glider using conception of Lagrangian method, is a new observation platform to understand the properties of the ocean vertically. In 2011 March, KORDI made a first successful autonomous trip from Hupo to west coast of Uleungdo piloting Littoral Glider of Alaska Native Technology LLC. The journey considered many environmental variables and route vigilantly selected, the glider covered 177 km horizontally and took approximately 6 days (153 hours). Despite the existence of 1 kt eddy current, Sound velocity sampling was conducted from 5 meters and reaching maximum of 200 meters depth at each dive. It successfully collected sound velocity and temperature profile at every 5 seconds totaling up to 1408 profiles using SVT&P sensor. During the flight it was also a mission to check the diverse modes of the glider i.e. spiral, waypoints, heading, drift and hover could function without a defect in a given situation. These modes were thoroughly monitored and it could be considered that the glider handled it well during the flight. As a result of this test flight, it was evident that the given underwater glider could operate under 2kt current environment with users defined heading and depth, also with the payload up to 5 kg without changing internal buoyancy.

  • The efficiency of active sonar that is used underwater observation equipment is important for obtain the information of topography and trace for the objects. Sound wave transmitted from sonar are distorted by acoustic window which is to protect sonar. Making various sonar dome is impossible for experiment, because consumed unnecessary time and expense. So, the purpose of this study is to simulate and analyze the acoustic window propagated sound wave from sonar for designing model reduced insertion loss. Simulation is performed by transient analysis and fluid-structure interaction analysis. As a result, this study will give a opportunity for efficient design of sonar dome without high cost and time consumption.

  • In the East Sea of Korea, the ocean environments are known to have strong variations in space and time. Their effects are very important factors in sound propagation and sonar performance. We consider the environmental factors such as eddies and thermal fronts affecting underwater sound propagation and target detection performance by sonars. Unfortunately, however, the detailed structure of eddies is usually difficult to understand by using the sea surface temperatures from infrared images alone or a few profiles from the CTD (conductivity, temperature and depth) castings. The temperature fields of eddy and thermal front are simulated with typical patterns of those obtained from several observations. This paper delivers the overviews of environments and acoustic models with their simulation results on sonar performance.

  • In passive sonar, the frequency spectrum of a sound radiated by underwater moving targets is composed of a broadband nonuniform background noise and narrowband discrete tonals. To detect the tonals, the background noise is estimated and removed. Using the existing algorithms that estimate the background noise, a week tonals are not detected. Because a freuqency line that is formed by tonals which are being extracted continuously is a feture of the target, we are nessesory to efficiently detect the tonals that compose the frequncy line. In this paper, we propose an efficient neural network that can remove automatically the background and detect the even errl tonals, and we extract the frequency line feature on the spectrogram by the proposed algorithm. The experimental results for a ship's radiated sound show a better performance in comparison with the existing TPM algorithm.

  • In this study, the underwater acoustic images were obtained by ultrasonicwave. The experiment was performed in the anechoic watertank, using a passive sonar array for one and two sound source respectively by X-Y scanning technique. The receiving array was consist of 8 disc type transducers with 1.5cm diameter at 25KHz resonance frequency. The scanned data were processed by the FORTRAN IV algorithm for the reconstruction of image, and the image had some noise due to the surface reflected waves. As the result, it was found that the acoustic imaging by electrical deflection and dynamic focusing technique is applicable to SONAR with the suppression of surface reflected wave.

  • Multiuser communication has been an important research area of underwater acoustic communications and networking. This paper studies the use of adaptive orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) in a downlink scenario, where a central node sends data to multiple distributed nodes simultaneously. In practical implementations, the instantaneous channel state information (CSI) cannot be perfectly known by the central node in time-varying underwater acoustic (UWA) channels, due to the long propagation delays resulting from the low sound speed. In this paper, we explore the CSI feedback for resource allocation. An adaptive power-bit loading algorithm is presented, which assigns subcarriers to different users and allocates power and bits to each subcarrier, aiming to minimize the bit error rate (BER) under power and throughput constraints. Simulation results show considerable performance gains due to adaptive subcarrier allocation and further improvement through power and bit loading, as compared to the non-adaptive interleave subcarrier allocation scheme. In a lake experiment, channel feedback reduction is implemented through subcarrier clustering and uniform quantization. Although the performance gains are not as large as expected, experiment results confirm that adaptive subcarrier allocation schemes based on delayed channel feedback or long term statistics outperform the interleave subcarrier allocation scheme.

  • Underwater acoustic communication channels have very complex channel characteristics caused by time-varying sea surface, submarine topography, sound speed, and geometry between transmitter and receiver. Especially, the channel has time-variance and doppler effect due to wind and sea current. We have to recognize the channel state and apply it to communication technique for increasing transmission efficiency in the underwater acoustic channel. In this paper, we present the frame recursive modulation and demodulation method using ambiguity function and autocorrelation function to estimate the doppler frequency. Furthermore, we conducted the simulation and sea experiment to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. When the channel coding technique was not used, the bit error rate performance of the proposed method was improved about 32 % compared with conventional method.

  • In this paper, we analysis to consider the performance of PSPM (Phase Shift Pulse-position Modulation), the one of the low power communication technique, in near-field underwater sound channel by sea trial. PSPM is a QPSK(Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) modulation combined with PPM(Pulse Position Modulation) for low power communication in WBAN(Wireless Body Area Network). It is known that the bandwidth efficiency of PSPM is lower than conventional PSK but the power efficiency increases. In this paper, we will analyze the BER performance of PSPM using data acquired from the sea trials. The BER of QPSK was $6.04{\times}10^{-2}$, PSPM was $3.5{\times}10^{-1}$. Also, PSNR of QPSK was 9.37 dB and in case of PSPM was 9.11 dB.
