  • The ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC), a type of electro-active polymer material, has received enormous interest in various fields such as robotics, medical sensors, artificial muscles because it has many advantages of flexibility, light weight, high displacement, and low voltage activation, compare to traditional mechanical actuators. Mostly noble metal materials such as gold or platinum were used to form the electrode of an IPMC by using electroless plating process. Furthermore, carbon-based materials, which are carbon nanotube (CNT) and reduced graphene-CNT composite, were used to alter the electrode of IPMC. To form the electrode of IPMC, we employ the synthesized graphene on copper foil by chemical vapor deposition method and use the transfer process by using a support of PET/silicone film. The properties of graphene were evaluated by Raman spectroscopy, UV/Vis spectroscopy, and 4-point probe. The structure and surface of IPMC were analyzed via field emission scanning electron microscope. The fabricated IPMC performance such as displacement and operating frequency was measured in underwater.

  • This paper provides a case study of development testing and evaluation of design goal of Interferometric SAS (Synthetic Aperture Sonar) system that is developing supported by Civil-Military Technology Cooperation Center in offshore fields. For Deep water operating capabilities evaluation, We have surveyed candidate field, bathymetric mapping and target identification over 200 m depth, East Sea. In testing phase, We have provided environmental information of testing field include water column, seabed and weather condition in real time. And to compare excellency of developing InSAS, we have gather commercial imaging sonar system data with same target. This case study will support the Test Readiness Review of future underwater surveillance system developing via investigate marine testing field environment, testing facilities and planning.

  • Various approaches have been tried in an effort to improve the power performance of a flapping tidal stream turbine after it was introduced as an alternative to conventional rotary turbines. Among the different approaches, researches on mimicking the morphology and behavior of animals have been conducted. In this study, we utilized a flapper to mimic the multi-joint pectoral fin of a Manta-ray and investigated its effect on power generation. Experiments were conducted by a dual flapping apparatus with rigid and flexible flappers in a towing tank facility. First, in order to determine the conditions that can produce high power generation, the performances of the dual rigid flappers were compared when input arm angles and frequencies are changed, and the two conditions $40^{\circ}$, 0.2 Hz and $40^{\circ}$, 0.3 Hz for the input arm angle, frequency were selected. When the mimicked flexible flapper was used instead of the front rigid flapper and the rear one, the power was improved by an average of 22% and 38% in the experimental conditions, respectively. Moreover, it was recognized from the apparent camber observed during the experiment that the flexible flapper had been successfully applied. If the feasibility of the Manta-Ray mimicked flapper is improved through subsequent researches, the flapping tidal turbine can be a viable alternative to rotary turbines in the near future.

  • Bio-inspired underwater robots have been studied to improve the dynamic performance of fins, such as swimming speed and efficiency, which is the most basic performance. Among them, bio-inspired soft robots with a compliant tail fin can have high degrees of freedom. On the other hand, to improve the driving efficiency of the compliant fins, the stiffness of the tail fin should be changed with the driving frequency. Therefore, a new type of variable stiffness mechanism has been developed and verified. This study, which was inspired by the anatomy of a real dolphin, assessed a process of designing and manufacturing a robotic dolphin with a variable stiffness mechanism. By mimicking the vertebrae of a dolphin, the variable stiffness driving part was manufactured using subtractive and additive manufacturing. A driving tendon was placed considering the location of the tendon in the actual dolphin, and the additional tendon was installed to change its stiffness. A robotic dolphin was designed and manufactured in a streamlined shape, and the swimming speed was measured by varying the stiffness. When the stiffness of the tail fin was varied at the same driving frequency, the swimming speed and thrust changed by approximately 1.24 and 1.5 times, respectively.

  • Time-delay estimation between two receivers is a technique that has been applied in a variety of fields, from underwater acoustics to room acoustics and robotics. There are two types of time delay estimation techniques: one that estimates the amount of time delay from the correlation between receivers, and the other that parametrically models the time delay between receivers and estimates the parameters by system recognition. The latter has the characteristic that only a small fraction of the system's parameters are directly related to the delay. This characteristic can be exploited to improve the accuracy of the estimation by methods such as Lasso regularization. However, in the case of Lasso regularization, the necessary information is lost. In this paper, we propose a method using Elastic Net that adds Ridge regularization to Lasso regularization to compensate for this. Comparing the proposed method with the conventional Generalized Cross Correlation (GCC) method and the method using Lasso regularization, we show that the estimation variance is very small even for white Gaussian signal sources and colored signal sources.

  • In underwater signal processing, separating individual signals from mixed signals has long been a challenge due to low signal quality. The common method using Short-time Fourier transform for spectrogram analysis has faced criticism for its complex parameter optimization and loss of phase data. We propose a Triple-path Recurrent Neural Network, based on the Dual-path Recurrent Neural Network's success in long time series signal processing, to handle three-dimensional tensors from multi-channel sensor input signals. By dividing input signals into short chunks and creating a 3D tensor, the method accounts for relationships within and between chunks and channels, enabling local and global feature learning. The proposed technique demonstrates improved Root Mean Square Error and Scale Invariant Signal to Noise Ratio compared to the existing method.
