Compared to a terrestrial communication, the high BER(Bit Error Ratio) and low channel bandwidth are the major factor of throughput degradation due to characteristics of underwater channel. Therefore, a MAC protocol must be designed to solve this problem in UWASNs(Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks). MAC protocols for UWASNs can be classified into two major types according to the contention scheme(Contention-free scheme and Contention-based scheme). In large scale of sensor networks, a Contention-based scheme is commonly used due to time-synchronize problem of Contention-free scheme. In the contention-based scheme, Each node contends with neighbor nodes to access network channel by using Back-off algorithm. But a Slot-Time of Back-off algorithm has long delay times which are cause of decrease network throughput. In this paper, we propose a new scheme to solve this problem. The proposed scheme uses variable Slot-Time instead of fixed Slot-Time. Each node measures propagation delay from neighbors which are used by Slot-time. Therefore, Slot-Times of each node are optimized by considering node deployment. Consequently, the wasted-time for Back-off is reduced and network throughput is improved. A new mac protocol performance in throughput and delay is assessed through NS3 and compared with existing MAC protocol(MACA-U). Finally, it was proved that the MAC protocol using the proposed scheme has better performance than existing MAC protocol as a result of comparison.

LED(Light Emitting Diode) components have advantages of longer lifetime, lower power consumption and easy-to-control, compare to normal lamp and fluorescent light, according to the development of recent technologies. Thus, lots of illuminations which utilize LED components could be used. Recently, Visible Light Communication(VLC) which is a part of communication technologies, utilizing high speed response characteristic of LED components, started receiving public attention. In case of VLC, there is no need of frequency allocation due to no use of radio, but also no interference exists during data transmission, much different in ISM((Industrial Scientific Medical band). This is the reason why a lot of research results about VLC are becoming issued. In this paper, a survey of feasibility for using VLC utilizing an original LED illumination for underwater applications has been done and a primitive possibility of its application has been examined.

Long-range communication in deep waters must overcome the low data rate due to limited bandwidth. This paper presents the performance of Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) system to increase the data rate. In MIMO system, communication performance is degraded by crosstalk between users and an adaptive passive Time Reversal Processing (TRP) is widely used to eliminate this. In October 2018, long-range underwater acoustic communication experiment was conducted in deep water (1,000 m ~) off the east of Pohang, South Korea. During the experiment, a vertical line array was utilized and communication signals modulated by binary phase shift keying and quadrature phase shift keying with a symbol rate of 512 sps were transmitted. To generate MIMO communication signals, received signals from ranges of 26 km and 30 km is synthesized. Compared to the conventional passive TRP, the adaptive passive TRP eliminates the crosstalk between users and achieves error-free performance with an increase of output signal-to-noise ratio. Therefore, two users separated by 4 km in range achieves an aggregate data rate of 1,024 symbols/s.
Scattering by Sea surface roughness occurs due to sea level roughness, communication performance deteriorates by causing frequency spread in communication signals and time variation in communication channels. In order to compare the difference in time variation of underwater acoustic communication channel according to the surface roughness, an experiment was performed in a tank owned by Hanyang University Ocean Acoustics Lab. Artificial surface roughness was created in the tank and communication signals with three bandwidths were used (8 kHz, 16 kHz, 32 kHz). The measured surface roughness was converted into a Rayleigh parameter and used as a roughness parameter, and statistical analysis was performed on the time-varying channel characteristics of the surface path using Doppler spread and correlation time. For the Doppler spread of the surface path, the Weighted Root Mean Square Doppler spread (wfσν) that corrected the effect of the carrier frequency and bandwidth of the communication signal was used. Using the correlation time of the surface path and the energy ratio of the direct path and the surface path, the correlation of total channels was simulated and compared with the measured correlation time of total channels. In this study, we propose a method for efficient communication signal design in an arbitrary marine environment by using the time-varying characteristics of the sea surface path according to the sea surface roughness.
Underwater acoustic communication has multi path error because of reflection by sea-level and sea-bottom. The multipath of underwater channel causes signal distortion and error floor. In this paper, we consider the use of various channel coding schemes such as RS code, convolutional code, cross-layer code and LDPC code in order to compensate the multipath effect in underwater channel. As shown in simulation results, characteristic of multipath error is similar to that of random error, so interleaver has little effect for error correcting. For correcting of error floor by multipath error, it is necessary strong channel codes like LDPC code that is similar to Shannon's limit. And the performance of concatenated codes including RS codes has better performance than using singular channel codes.

Underwater acoustic communication channel is often defined as a multipath fading channel since the multipath arrivals from various paths interfere with each other and cause frequency dependent constructive or destructive interference in received signals. Therefore signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of received signal fluctuates as a function of frequency. In addition, sea surface fluctuation induces frequency dependent time variant signal fading due to coherent component variation of surface bounce path. The frequency shift keying (FSK) system is known to be less sensitive and more robust under these interference and fading, and M-ary frequency shift keying (MFSK) system is adopted to increase a data rate. In this study, a bit error rate (BER) of 4 channels 4FSK system are examined in shallow sea multipath channel. Experimental results show that RS code reduces efficiently the BER of 4FSK system since frequency dependent time-varying fading is characterized to give burst errors. The BER of a different data rate or different source-to-receiver range depends on not only the channel coherent bandwidth but also frequency dependent multipath fading.

Many studies in detection and classification of the targets in the underwater environments have been conducted for military purposes, as well as for non-military purpose. Due to the complicated characteristics of underwater acoustic signal reflecting multipath environments and spatio-temporal varying characteristics, active sonar target detection technique has been considered as a difficult technique. In this paper, we describe the basic concept of Fractional Fourier transform and optimal transform order. Then we analyze the relationship between time-frequency characteristics of an LFM signal and its spectrum using Fractional Fourier transform. Based on the analysis results, we present active sonar target detection method. To verify the performance of proposed methods, we compared the results with conventional FFT-based matched filter. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method compared to the conventional method in the aspect of AUC(Area Under the ROC Curve).

Nowadays, maritime communication systems need high data rate, reliability, and consistency in order to equivalently provide navigating ships with diverse multimedia services as in terrestrial communication systems. For this purpose, we conceptualize and design the maritime network for ships equipped with a multiband communication system which cost-effectively supports multimedia services according to several radiofrequency bands, such as HF, VHF, and satellite frequencies. We also introduce two service scenarios targeted for the maritime network; ship multimedia service (SMS) and real-time maritime logistics location tracking (RML2T). In addition, we specify related works according to three lower network layers (i.e., physical, data-link, and network layers) upon designing the network.
This paper presents the results for the performance improvement of underwater communication in a passive time reversal mirror (PTRM) using ray-based blind deconvolution (RBD). In conventional PTRM, the signal to be recovered is found from matched-filtering the received probe signal. However, the communication performance is degraded because the time-varying impulse response for each data frame is not reflected in the received probe signal. In this study, the time-variant transfer function is estimated from each received data frame using RBD, and the estimated time-variant transfer function is then used to recover the data signal using PTRM. The results from the experimental data show that the suggested method improves the communication performance when comparing with the conventional PTRM.
In this paper, an adaptive scheme for network topology configuration is proposed to save the overall energy consumption in underwater acoustic sensor network. The proposed scheme employs a self-organized networking methodology where network topology is locally optimized by exchanging the energy-related information between neighboring nodes such as the remaining energy of each node, in a way that the network life time can be augmented without any centralized control function. Computer simulation is used to evaluate the proposed scheme comparing with LEACH in terms of the number of alive nodes after a given time, the deviation of individual nodes' residual energy and the energy consumption at the initialization and coordination stages.
