  • The purpose of this study was to investigate children's understanding of beliefs by age, type of questions, and experimental conditions. The subjects were 72 children, 12 boys and 12 girls each at 3, 4, and 5 years of age. They were randomly assigned to "standard" or "disappeared" conditions. The results showed that children's understanding of other's beliefs differed by age. The children could explain other's behavior from other's belief, but they could not predict other's behavior from other's false belief. These differences were found only in the "standard" condition.

  • This study firstly examined 18 prospective secondary mathematics teachers' understanding of the nature of definitions and the use of the dynamic geometry software Sketchpad to not only improve their understanding of definitions, but also their ability to define geometric concepts themselves. Results indicated that the evaluation of definitions by accurate construction and measurement enabled students to achieve a better understanding of necessary and sufficient conditions, as well as the ability to more readily find counter-examples, and to recognize uneconomical definitions, and improve them.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide an understanding of the designs that aid in the production or selection of clothing that generally corresponds with the contours of the human body. The study looks at effective and attractive clothing design used in various situations with the goal of gaining understanding of the nuances of women's jackets. To achieve the goals of this jacket study, a sensuous test was employed and several horizontal sections, based on silhouette appearance, were compared and then analysed. The sensuous test was aimed at understanding the visual effects of the silhouette of the jacket.

  • In this paper, we present an analysis of how students understand some statistical terms, mainly from inferential statistics, which are taught at the high school level. We focus our analysis on those terms that present more difficulties and are persistent in spite of having been studied until the college level. This analysis leads us to a hierarchical classification of responses at different levels of understanding using the SOLO theoretical framework.

  • This paper shows how a distinctive feature model can effectively be implemented into speech understanding within the framework of the Optimality Theory(OT); i.e., to show how distinctive features can optimally be extracted from given speech signals, and how segments can be chosen as the optimal ones among plausible candidates. This paper will also show how the sequence of segments can successfully be matched with optimal words in a lexicon.

  • The totality of language learning comprises three integrated components: linguistic, cultural, and attitudinal (Wilkes, 1983).Positively sensitizing students to cultural phenomena is urgent and crucial. A positive attitude toward L2 culture is a factor in language learning that leads to cross cultural understanding. This research examined, through a survey analysis, how three groups of students (one high school group and two university student groups) viewed the role of their foreign culture (i.e., American and British cultures) in achieving cultural understanding. The focus was upon how EFL learners approach the target language culture as well as their own culture.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze expressions in the first and second grade math textbooks in elementary school in the aspect of possibilities of learners' understanding and propose proper directions for expressions in math textbooks to increase the possibilities of their understanding. The findings show that there were four types of expression errors and five types of mathematical errors in the aspects of expression method and content, respectively.

  • Understanding the interplay between galaxies and dark matter in the universe is one of key challenges in modern astrophysics. This provides an important test of structure formation scenarios and cosmological models. I discuss three aspects of this test: (1) comparing the matter distribution from galaxy redshift surveys with that from weak-lensing surveys, (2) statistical comparison of large-scale structures between observations and cosmological simulations, and (3) multi-wavelength study of galaxies. These tests underscore the importance of combining photometric and spectroscopic surveys in observations along with cosmological simulations for exploring and understanding the structure formation.

  • This study examined the difference in children's performance between two types of task by the number of protagonists and children's implicit understanding of false-belief. The implicit measure by eye gaze was contrasted with children's explicit answers to the experimenter's question about where the protagonist would look for an object. Results showed there was no difference according to the task type by number of protagonists. On false-belief, 2- and 3-year-olds showed low performance compared with 4-year-olds on explicit responses. On implicit responses, 3- and 4-year-olds out-performed 2-year-olds. These results suggest that implicit understanding precedes explicit understanding.

  • Allopathic medicine has had a lot of limits though it has maintained the status of mainstream medicine, therefore these days there has been a growing interests in traditional medicine of East Asia. According to this trend, the integration between allopathic medicine and traditional medicine has become a hot issue and the need of mutual understanding on their physiology and pathology increases. However, understanding of traditional medical theory based on ying-yang, five phases, viscera and bowels is still difficult to be accepted to allopathic medical fields. Therefore, this research tried to investigate the similarity and differences of the structures between five viscera and organs. As a result, this research found that the investigation and understanding on viscera in traditional medicine or organs in allopathic medicine has in common in some degree. However, the integration and comparison between two medicines should be done cautiously because there still are the basal different points of understanding of human structure and function.
