Quantitative risk assessment (QRA) of railway is to create a variety of scenario and to quantify the degree of risk by a result of the product of accident frequency and accident. Quantitative risk Assessment is affected by various factors such as tunnel specifications, characteristics of the fire, and relation of smoke control and evacuation direction. So in this study, it is conducted that how the way of smoke control and the relation of smoke control and evacuation direction affect quantitative risk assessment with variables (the tunnel length (2, 3, 4, 5, 6 km) and the slope (5, 15, 25‰)). As the result, in a train fire at the double track tunnel (Area = $97m^2$), it is most efficient to evacuate to the opposite direction of smoke control regardless of the location of train in train fire. In addition, under the same condition, index risk in mechanical ventilation up to 1/10.

Surveillance cameras installed in tunnels capture the various video frames effected by dynamic and variable factors. In addition, localizing and managing the cameras in tunnel is not affordable, and quality of capturing frame is effected by time. In this paper, we introduce a new method to detect and track the vehicles in tunnel by using surveillance cameras installed in a tunnel. It is difficult to detect the video frames directly from surveillance cameras due to the motion blur effect and blurring effect on lens by dirt. In order to overcome this difficulties, two new methods such as Differential Frame/Non-Maxima Suppression (DFNMS) and Haar Cascade Detector to track cars are proposed and investigated for their feasibilities. In the study, it was shown that high precision and recall values could be achieved by the two methods, which then be capable of providing practical data and key information to an automatic accident detection system in tunnels.

Low-pressure sodium lamps, high-pressure sodium lamps, and fluorescent lamps are mainly used for tunnel lighting in Rep. of Korea, which accounts for the highest percentage in the tunnel maintenance costs. Therefore, tunnel lights are being replaced by LED lamp that have advantages with respect to low power consumption and sustainability. To analyze the effect of replacement high pressure sodium lamp with LED lamp, illumination and monthly power usage per year have been investigated for 10 tunnels. The usage of LED lamp results in illumination improvement from 27.9% to 490% and power saving around average 47.1%.
It is studied to select the reinforcement method of an abandoned tunnel which are intersected under the new roadway line. In the various decision makings, the reasonability for the reinforcement method of an abandoned tunnel was estimated using the pair-wise comparison and the fuzzy approximate reasoning to simplify the process of survey research. And there is reflected all the qualitative and quantitative characterizations by investigation items. In order to select the reinforcement method of an abandoned tunnel, 4 characteristic factors of construction, economical efficiency, safety and maintenance were used. Using the simple survey research and pair-wise comparison matrix, the weight of 4 factors was decided. The fuzzy approximate reasoning was used to calculate the quantitative value of each factor And then reflecting each weight to these results, the final reinforcement method of an abandoned tunnel could be determined.
With the rapid development of urban underground traffic, the study of soil deformation induced by subway tunnel construction and its settlement prediction are gradually of general concern in engineering circles. The law of soil displacement caused by shield tunnel construction of adjacent buildings is analyzed in this paper. The author holds that ground surface settlement based on the Gauss curve or Peck formula induced by tunnel excavation of adjacent buildings is not reasonable. Integrating existing research accomplishments, the paper proposed that surface settlement presents cork distribution curve characters, skewed distribution curve characteristics and normal distribution curve characteristics when the tunnel is respectively under buildings, within the scope of the disturbance and outside the scope of the disturbance. Calculation formulas and parameters on cork distribution curve and skewed distribution curve were put forward. The numerical simulation, experimental comparison and model test analysis show that it is reasonable for surface settlement to present cork distribution curve characters, skewed distribution curve characteristics and normal distribution curve characteristics within a certain range. The research findings can be used to make effective prediction of ground surface settlement caused by tunnel construction of adjacent buildings, and to provide theoretical guidance for the design and shield tunnelling.
The jointed rock mass behavior often plays a major role in the design of underground excavation, and their failures during excavation and in operation, are usually closely related to joints. This research attempts to evaluate the effects of two basic geometric factors influencing tunnel behavior in a jointed rock mass; joints spacing and joints orientation. A hybridized indirect boundary element code known as TFSDDM (Two-dimensional Fictitious Stress Displacement Discontinuity Method) is used to study the stress distribution around the tunnels excavated in jointed rock masses. This numerical analysis revealed that both the dip angle and spacing of joints have important influences on stress distribution on tunnel walls. For example the tensile and compressive tangential stresses at the boundary of the circular tunnel increase by reduction in the joint spacing, and by increase the dip joint angle the tensile stress in the tunnel roof decreases.

The underground construction and mining are facing many geomechanics challenges stemming from, geological complexities and stress-driven rock mass degradation processes. Brittle failing rock at depth poses unique problems as stress-driven failure processes often dominate the tunnel behaviour. Such failure processes can lead to shallow unravelling or strainbursting modes of instability that cause difficult conditions for tunnel contractors. This keynote address focuses on the challenge of anticipating the actual behaviour of brittle rocks in laboratory testing, for empirical rock mass strength estimation, and by back-analysis of field observations. This paper summarizes lessons learned during the construction of deep Alpine tunnels and highlights implications that are of practical importance with respect to constructability. It builds on a recent presentation made at the $1^{st}$ Southern Hemisphere International Rock Mechanics Symposium held in Perth, Australia, in September this year, and includes results from recent developments.
According to the wide application of diesel equipments in tunneling faces, the air contamination by various toxic gases and carcinogenic diesel particulate matter becomes a serious problem these days. For taking a scientific measures to solve the problem, the way to simulate 3 dimensional flow movement of the working sites is required. In this paper, the newly developed simulation program(3D-FLOW) and the results of a simulation on a model tunneling workings using diesel equipments are introduced. In case of typical model of tunneling face, the gas concentration of human height is about one third of roof concentration and right side half of the tunnel shows better environment than left half. NOx concentration of workings can be estimated about 0.45ppm which is much lower than permissible level(5 ppm).

Steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) is widely used for tunnel lining structure such as shot-crete in NATM tunnel and segment in TBM tunnel. In tunnel fire accidents, structural performance of a lining is very important because the lining is the structure that directly exposed to fire. In this study, the effects of high temperatures, mix ratios and types on failure pattern, DPT tensile strength and coefficient of variation were investigated through Double Punch Tests (DPT) of SFRC subjected to high temperatures. In the results, it is confirmed that the residual DPT tensile strength increases as for SFRC and this is more in SFRC with higher mix ratio. But, the equation for evaluation of DPT tensile strength does not involve the number of failure surfaces SFRC specimens subjected to high temperatures, therefore, it is required to investigate more fracture energy in DPT tests.

This paper presents the effect of excavating methods on tunnel behavior. As part of this study, it is preliminarily focused on the comparison of two different excavation methods, center diaphram (CD) method and ringcut (RC) method. Especially, the purpose of this research is to study the behavioral mechanism of two tunnels which share the same construction environment but different excavating method. Two numerical analysis models with the same tunnel section and material properties are compared in this study, and they are analyzed by 3D finite element analysis. In each model, face stability, crown displacement, ground settlement, and shotcrete-lining stress are computed, then the general behavior of CD method and RC method is studied. The results indicate that the CD method tends to be effective in controlling tunnel displacement while the RC method is more effective in controlling ground settlement. Design implications of the findings from this study are discussed.
