  • The present numerical study describes the flow physics on the interaction between the supersonic freestream and jet plume. The compressible flow past a simplified afterbody model with a sonic nozzle is investigated using mass-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, discretized by a fully implicit finite volume scheme, and the standard $k-{\omega}$ turbulence model. The results obtained through the present study are discussed specifically regarding the effect of the plume pressure ratio, freestream Mach number and base dimensions on the location of the plume-induced shock wave generated on the afterbody by the underexpansion of the jet plume.

  • In this paper, Supersonic jets impinging on a wedge were investigated in order to acquire fundamental design data for jet deflectors. Surface pressure distributions and pressure contours were obtained using a cold flow tester producing Mach 2 supersonic jets. Schlieren system was used to visualize the flow structure on the wedge surface. Numerical computations were performed and compared with the experimental results. Both results were in good agreement. The results showed that underexpansion ratio did not affect on the surface pressure distribution when the wedge is located at the nozzle exit. With increasing underexpansion ratio, pressure recovery decreased as the wedge is located farther from the nozzle exit. In the pressure contour, it was possible to locate the region where the peak pressure on the wedge surface was occurred.

  • A technique of mixing enhancement in an underexpanded sonic round jet is studied with fully expanded jet Mach number 1.5. Tonal sound, jet screech can be produced at some underexpansion pressure ratio in a sonic jet. Since the jet screech excites the initial Jet shear layer to change the flow, a reflector which focuses the jet screech near the nozzle lip is designed. The reflector has an elliptic shape of which two foci are located near the nozzle lip and the jet screech source region. Jet screech tone near the nozzle lip increases with the elliptic reflector and spreading of the jet largely increases. It is concluded that mixing enhancement of the jet with the elliptic reflector is attributed to large scale structures which are initially excited by the increased jet screech.

  • This paper experimentally investigates the characteristics of dual coaxial jet issuing from inner supersonic nozzle and four kinds of outer converging nozzle of 40, 50, $60^{\circ}$ and $70^{\circ}$ in outer ejection angle. The pressure ratio of the stagnation to the exit ambient pressures in the inner supersonic nozzle of constant expansion rate is 7.5, which is corresponded to the condition of a slightly underexpanded, and that of outer nozzle is 4.0. Flow visualizations by using of shadowgraph method, impact pressure and centerline static pressure measurements are presented. It is found that the jet structure is changed significantly by the variation of outer nozzle ejection angle. Impact pressure level is lower and undulation of static pressure is higher, as the injection angle of outer jet increases.

  • Supersonic jets impinging on $60^{\cire}$ wedge were investigated to obtain fundamental design data for jet deflector It was of interest to study flow phenomena such as shock interaction and separation induced by shear layer. Experiments using supersonic cold flow system were conducted for Schlieren flow visualization and measurement of surface pressure. Numerical results were compared with the experimental results. The major parameters are underexpansion ratio, distance from nozzle to apex and design Mach number. Flow conditions were obtained for the wedge shock to attach on or detach from the wedge. The dominant feature of flow-field is shock pattern induced by the Interaction between the wedge shock and the barrel shock.

  • The characteristics of dual coaxial jet which composed of inner supersonic nozzle of 26500 in constant expansion rate with 1.91 design Mach number and outer converging one with $40^{\circ}$ converging angle with the variation of outer nozzle stagnation pressures are experimentally investigated in this paper. In which the stagnation pressure for the inner supersonic nozzle is 750kPa thus, the inner jet leaving the nozzle is slightly underexpanded. The plenum pressures of outer nozzle are varied from 200 to 600kPa. Flow visualizations by shadowgraph method, impact pressure and centerline static pressure measurements of dual coaxial jet are presented. The results show that the presence of outer jet affects significantly the structures and pressure distributions of inner jet. And outer jet causes Mach disk which does not appear for the case of single jet stream. As the stagnation pressure of outer jet increases, impact pressure undulation is severe, but the average impact pressure keeps high far downstream.

  • In this paper, supersonic jets impinging on axisymmetric cone were investigated to obtain fundamental design data for jet deflector case of example being VTOL/STOL or rocket launch. It was of interest to study flow phenomena such as shock interactions and separation induced by shear layer. Experiments were conducted to obtain schlieren flow visualization and measurement of surface pressure. Numerical results are compared with the experimental result. The dominant feature of the flow is the shock pattern induced by the interaction between the cone shock and the barrel shock. This pattern can take a wide variety of forms depending on the structure of the free jet and strongly influences the form of the surface pressure distributions.
