EFFECT OF URINARY NITROGENOUS COMPOUNDS ON THE ENERGY METABOLISM OF BIRD

  • In order to study the relationships between the contents of urinary nitrogenous compounds and energy utilization of bird, the sum of nitrogen contents of uric acid, ammonia, creatine and urea voided in excreta was estimated as the urinary nitrogen (UN) in 13-33 day-old fed or fasted White Leghorn male chicks. Energy retention and heat production of birds were determined by comparative slaughter studies. 2.75 mg of endogenous urinary nitrogen (EUn) and 2.19 mg of uric acid was excreted constantly per kJ heat production in fasted bird. One mg of UN was proportionated to 32.26 J (r = 0.999, n = 8) of the urinary energy (UE) in fed and 32.97 J (r = 0.9998, n = 8) of the endogenous urinary energy (UEn) in the fasted bird. Also relationships between 1 mg of uric acid and 38.95 J of UE (r = 0.998, n = 8) or 38.97 J of UEe (r = 0.996, n = 8) were significant (p<0.01). The EUn (r = 0.997, n = 4), uric acid (r = 0.995, n = 4) and metabolic fecal energy (FEm) plus UEe (r = 0.961, n = 4) were increased with the increase of body weight (g/bird). Metabolic fecal nitrogen (MFn) or energy (FEm), EUn and UEe per unit diet were not influenced by the age of day or body weight. The results indicated that energy and protein utilization of bird can be approximated by the relationships among urinary nitrogen, urinary energy, uric acid content in excreta and body weight of bird.

  • The utilization of unused energy is important because it can afford to offer a chance to increase energy efficiency of a heat pump system. One of the promising unused energy sources is river water. It can be used as a heat source in both heating and cooling effectively with its superior features as a secondary working fluids. In this study, the performance of a 5HP heat pump system using river water as a heat source is investigated by both experiment and simulation. According to system simulation results, performance improvement of condenser seems more effective than that of evaporator for better $COP_H$. The serial connection is also preferred among several methods to improve plate type heat exchanger performance. The experimental results show that the hot water of $50{\sim}60^{\circ}C$ can be acquired from water heat source of $5{\sim}9^{\circ}C$ with $COP_H$ of $2.7{\sim}3.5$.

  • Process modeling with activated sludge models (ASMs) is useful for the design and operational improvement of biological nutrient removal (BNR) processes. Effective utilization of ASMs requires the influent fraction analysis (IFA) of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). However, this is difficult due to the time and cost involved in the design and operation steps, thereby declining the simulation reliability. Harmony Search (HS) algorithm was utilized herein to determine the relationships between composite variables and state variables of the model IWA ASM1. Influent fraction analysis was used in estimating fractions of the state variables of the WWTP influent and its application to 9 wastewater treatment processes in South Korea. The results of influent $S_s$ and $Xs+X_{BH}$, which are the most sensitive variables for design of activated sludge process, are estimated within the error ranges of 8.9-14.2% and 3.8-6.4%, respectively. Utilizing the chemical oxygen demand (COD) fraction analysis for influent wastewater, it was possible to predict the concentrations of treated organic matter and nitrogen in 9 full scale BNR processes with high accuracy. In addition, the results of daily influent fraction analysis (D-IFA) method were superior to those of the constant influent fraction analysis (C-IFA) method.

A Study on Nitridation and Oxidation Reaction of Titanium Powder (금속티타늄분말의 질화반응과 산화반응에 관한 연구)

  • The nitridation kinetics of titanium powder were studied by isothermal and non-isothermal (dynamic) methods in high purity nitrogen under I atm pressure. For the comparison with nitridation, the oxidation kinetics of titanium powder were also studied in dry oxygen at I atm pressure. An automatic recording electrobalance was used to measure the weight gain as a function of time and temperature. For the reaction with nitrogen, the nitride was formed at over $700^{\circ}C$. The reaction with nitrogen followed the parabolic rate law, and the activation energy was calculated to be 31 kcal/mol in the isothermal method (above $900^{\circ}C$). The non-stoichiometric TiNx has been synthesized by the nitridation at a proper temperature and time, followed by the homogenizing treatment above $1100^{\circ}C$. In comparison with the stoichiometric $TiN_{1.0}$ and the non-stoichiometric TiNx ($TiN_{0.5}$ and $TiN_{0.65}$), the hot oxidation characteristics of the former is superior to that of the latter. However, both non-stoichiometric nitrides make little difference in the hot oxidation characteristics.

Perspectives on Solar Energy Development in the Age of Climate Change Convention (기후변화협약 시대의 태양에너지 개발 전망)

  • Since entered into force in 1994, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change(UNFCCC) would require all the member nations to adopt national programme for mitigating climate change and industrialized countries to undertake specific commitments of carbon dioxide emission reduction. Considering all the situation, it may be safe to assume that Korea would undertake such commitment early in the next century. Unfortunately, however, we are in the position that is very disadvantageous in preparing national strategies for carbon dioxide reduction mainly due to our rigid energy-intensive economic structure and poor geographic conditions. Solar energy is regarded as most available renewable energy resource in Korea and hence development of solar energy technology would serve as one of most effective alternatives for energy conservation and renewable energy utilization. In this regard, the presenting paper discuss the perspectives on solar energy development in relation to carbon dioxide reduction strategies. Such technologies of solar cell mass production and solar heating were considered to be most advantageous among many solar energy solutions discussed in this paper.

  • There are fifteen solar radiation measurement stations over the entire country in Korea. However, they are not capable of supplying reliable solar radiation data for remote areas including islands. The un-manned automated insolation measurement station is suitable for these areas due to the electric power shortage and the maintenance problems at these isolated areas. Our main aim in this work is to develop a solar radiation measurement system which collects and stores data by itself utilizing a PV module and a battery as power source for entire system irregardless of the environmental condition. A developed KIER's prototype system along with an independent HWS reference system has been installed at the designated remote island, Dok-do. Global solar radiation has been measured every hour for a 6-month period of time by both systems at this site. A comparison between the measured solar radiation data by each system indicates that there is an excellent agreement showing average 3.0% of an absolute error. It has been observed that the 8-month average global solar radiation was $2,330W/m^2$ day at this island. We came to the conservative conclusion that the developed KIER system is applicable for measuring solar radiation and for supplying reliable fundamental design data for solar energy utilization system at the remote areas.

Nuclear Design Feasibility of the Soluble Boron Free PWR Core

  • A nuclear design feasibility of soluble boron free(SBF core for the medium-sized(600MWe) PWR was investigated. The result conformed that soluble boron free operation could be performed by using current PWR proven technologies. Westinghouse advanced reactor, AP-600 was chosen as a design prototype. Design modification was applied for the assembly design with burnable poison and control rod absorber material. In order to control excess reactivity, large amount of gadolinia integral burnable poison rods were used and B4C was used as a control rod absorber material. For control of bottom shift axial power shape due to high temperature feedback in SBF core, axial zoning of burnable poison was applied to the fuel assemblies design. The combination of enrichment and rod number zoning for burnable poison could make an excess reactivity swing flat within around 1% and these also led effective control on axial power offset and peak pin power, The safety assessment of the designed core was peformed by the calculation of MTC, FTC and shutdown margin. MTC in designed SBF core was greater around 6 times than one of Ulchin unit 3&4. Utilization of enriched BIO(up to 50w1o) in B4C shutdown control rods provided enough shutdown margin as well as subcriticality at cold refueling condition.

Application of Seawater Plant Technology for supporting the Achievement of SDGs in Tarawa, Kiribati (키리바시 타라와의 지속가능발전목표 달성 지원을 위한 해수플랜트 기술 활용)

  • Pacific island countries, including Kiribati, are suffering from a shortage of essential resources as well as a reduction in their living space due to sea level rise and coastal erosion from climate change, groundwater pollution and vegetation changes. Global activities to solve these problems are being progressed by the UN's efforts to implement SDGs. Pacific island countries can adapt to climate change by using abundant marine resources. In other words, seawater plants can assist in achieving SDGs #2, #6 and #7 based on SDGs #14 in these Pacific island countries. Under the auspice of Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO) established the Sustainable Seawater Utilization Academy (SSUA) in 2016, and its 30 graduates formed the SSUA Kiribati Association in 2017. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) of the Republic of Korea awarded ODA fund to the Association. By taking advantage of seawater resource and related plants, it was able to provide drinking water and vegetables to the local community from 2018 to 2020. Among the various fields of education and practice provided by SSUA, the Association hope to realize hydroponic cultivation and seawater desalination as a self-support project through a pilot project. To this end, more than 140 households are benefiting from 3-stage hydroponics, and a seawater desalination system in connection with solar power generation was installed for operation. The Association grows and supplies vegetable seedlings from the provided seedling cultivation equipment, and is preparing to convert to self-support business from next year. The satisfaction survey shows that Tarawa residents have a high degree of satisfaction with the technical support and its benefits. In the future, it is hoped that SSUA and regional associations will be distributed to neighboring island countries to support their SDGs implementations.

Comparison of WABA and Gd Burnable Absorbers Nuclear Characteristics and Optimal Allocation of Gd Rods in Fuel Assembly (WABA및 가도리니움 독봉 집합체에 대한 핵특성 비교 및 집합체내 가도리니아봉 위치 최적 선정)

  • Recent popular trends in pressurized water reactor(PWR) fuel management are to extend the cycle length and to employ the low-leakage core designs for the optimal utilization of the uranium resources. In control strategy incorporated with the fuel management, turnable absorbers are required to control the power peaking and to ensure a negative moderator temperature coefficient during reactor operation. In this study, the nuclear characteristics and the optimal allocation of gadolinium-poisoned rods within the fuel assembly are considered using KWU SAV 79 A Code Package. First, analyses are carried out to compare the nuclear characteristics of the fuel assemblies contain-ing WABA(Wet Annular Burnable Absorber) and Gadolinium burnable absorbers respectively. The analyses show that the gadolinium-bearing fuel assembly has peculiar depletion characteristics ensuing from the very large thermal neutron absorption cross section. Peculiar characteristics of gadolinium provide basis for the optimal allocation of Gd rods in fuel assembly. Second, the methodology of an optimal allocation of gadolinium-poisoned rods within the fuel assembly is developed and applied to some nuclear designs.
