Equipment to cauterize tumors by an electrically heated Kanthal wire is under development. The wire( alloy of iron, chromium and Aluminum) keeps sufficient strength up to 1400 degrees in Celsius. Although AC 50Hz current source is used in the prototype experiment, RF current will be used in future. The diameter of the Kanthal wire was 0.3 mm which was connected to Kanthal wire of 0.8 mm. The thicker wire was used as a leading wire. The possibility of application of the heating wire in combination with an ultrasound endoscope was determined, where ultrasound endoscope is to be used to monitor the location on the wire and an extent of a tumor in digestive organs. This procedure requires the wire to be applied inside ultrasound transmitting media. First, the wire was applied in the degassed water in which a chicken liver sample was submerged. The wire, however, burned out in water soon after it became red-hot at 12 A. The reason is that large current is required for the wire to become red-hot due to strong convection. Starch paste of 3 weight percent was employed instead of water. This made the wire red-hot approximately at 6 A, showing the increased viscosity of the starch decreased the convection and the wire was cover by the steam. The liver sample was cauterized successively, while the location of the wire and the liver was monitored by an ultrasound diagnosis equipment outside the plastic vessel of the starch paste.

This study investigates the effects of moisture content on diffuse ultrasound to be applied for the evaluation of micro-structural damage in concrete subjected to various environmental conditions. We monitored diffuse wave parameters for concrete samples in process of water saturation for 5 days. Dried samples were immersed in a water bath, and the change of moisture content in concrete were estimated by measuring the change of mass. For the diffuse wave analysis, a frequency range of 500 kHz, which represents a scattering regime of ultrasound in concrete, was selected. The test results reveal that the ultrasonic diffusivity slightly changed, and the ultrasonic dissipation significantly increased by approximately 120% in the process of water saturation. Therefore, the moisture content in concrete should be considered for the evaluation of micro-structural damage using diffuse wave techniques.

The scanning laser source (SLS) technique is a promising new laser ultrasonic tool for the detection of small surface-breaking defects. The SLS approach is based on monitoring the changes in laser-generated ultrasound as a laser source is scanned over a defect. Changes in amplitude and frequency content are observed for ultrasound generated by the laser over uniform and defective areas. The SLS technique uses a point or a short line-focused high-power laser beam which is swept across the test specimen surface and passes over surface-breaking or subsurface flaws. The ultrasonic signal that arrives at the Rayleigh wave speed is monitored as the SLS is scanned. It is found that the amplitude and frequency of the measured ultrasonic signal have specific variations when the laser source approaches, passes over and moves behind the defect. In this paper, the setup for SLS experiments with full B-scan capability is described and SLS signatures from small surface-breaking and subsurface flaws are discussed using a point or short line focused laser source.
Multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were modified with a water soluble polymer, poly(vinyl alcohol), PVA, using a simple ultrasonic wave in water. Under the irradiation of ultrasound, PVA chains were severed as macroradicals and instantly grafted onto the surface of MWCNTs due to the radical scavenging effect of MWCNTs. To control the grafting PVA onto MWCNTs, the ultrasonication power and irradiation time were changed from 300 to 500 W and from 10 to 50 min, respectively. The grafted PVA onto MWCNTs was confirmed by FTIR, TGA, SEM, and TEM. Dispersion stability of the modified MWCNTs was monitored by Turbiscan. The amount of grafted PVA on MWCNTs increased with the increase in the sonication power and irradiation time. The grafted PVA on MWCNTs induced the improved dispersion stability of the modified MWCNTs in water. These findings exhibit that ultrasound can be readily used for the grafting polymer chains on MWCNTs.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is common primary tumor of kidney. In the past, it had been considered a difficult tumor to manage since the detection was usually delayed until paraneoplastic syndrome and/or distant metastasis appeared due to its slow progression. However, the recent popularization of ultrasound and computed tomography has made RCC one of the easily curable cancers. Eighty percent are found early, mostly with tumor size less than 5 cm. Five-year survival rate after successful nephrectomy is exceeded 80-90 percent. Curative nephrectomy can be tried in stage 1 and 2, and some cases of stage 3. In these cases, return to flight can be considered after 6 to 12 months' observation. It should be monitored any occurrence of cancer recurrence, need for systemic treatment, metastasis, and paraneoplastic syndrome, etc. If any signs of recurrence are found or new treatment needs to be initiated, the flight should be suspended. If there is no recurrence for more than 5 to 10 years, the patient doesn't have to be followed anymore.
The use of ground fly ash in concrete can increase the risk of slump loss due to the drastic surface change of the particles after the grinding treatment and the accelerated reaction compared to the untreated ash. This study is aimed at the early age hydration and time-dependent rheology changes of cement paste containing ground fly ash. An original fly ash is ground into different fineness and the hydration of cement paste containing the ground fly ash is monitored with the ultrasound propagation method. The zeta potentials of the solid particles are measured and the changes of rheological parameters of the cement pastes with time are analyzed with a rheometer. A particle packing model is used to probe packing of the solid particles. The results show that the early age hydration of the paste is strongly promoted by replacing Portland cement with fly ash up to 30 percent (by mass), causing increase of the yield stress of the paste. The viscosity of a paste containing ground fly ash is lower than that containing the untreated ash, which is explained by the denser packing of the solid particles.
Objectives: To introduce the effect of traditional Korean medicine (TKM) treatment with Injinoryeong-san on alcoholic liver cirrhosis (ALC).Methods: A 37-year-old man with a history of alcohol ingestion for the past five years was diagnosed with ALC based upon his clinical symptoms, sonogram results, and laboratory studies. The patient received TKM treatment with acupuncture, moxibustion, and Injinoryeong-san in parallel to Western medicine for two weeks. The clinical assessment was monitored based upon changes in the Child-Pugh score and ultrasonography, body weight, and abdominal circumference for measuring the amount of ascites. Results: The patient’s clinical symptoms improved with decreases in abdominal circumference and body weight. Ultrasound revealed a regression of the amount of ascites in the abdominal cavity. Laboratory results also improved significantly, and the Child-Pugh score increased from class B to A.Conclusions: This case report showed a significant improvement of ALC with relatively simple treatment for only a short period and therefore supported the potential of TKM treatment in ALC.
Adenosine and cordycepin are bioactive compounds with health benefits. Therefore, both substances are often used to assess the quality of Cordyceps products. Optimization and validation of the HPLC/DAD method for determining two nucleosides were studied. The samples were prepared using an ultrasound-assisted extraction (ultrasonic bath). The result was optimal conditions for aqueous extraction, an extraction time of 35 min, and an extraction temperature of 40 ℃. The Chromatographic separation was achieved using a reverse phase column (InfinityLab Poroshell 120 EC-C18, 4.6 × 250 mm, 2.7 ㎛) at 30 ℃ with a mobile phase gradient elution of water and methanol at a flow rate of 0.7 mL/min. The eluents were monitored via a diode array detector at 260 nm. Two nucleosides were separated by less than 12 min after injection. The developed method was found to be excellent linear (r2 > 0.9999), accurate (% recovery 95.34-98.51), and precise (% relative standard deviation < 2.0). The limit of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were 0.45 and 1.38 mg/mL for adenosine and 0.47 and 1.43 mg/mL for cordycepin, respectively. This method was satisfactory for simultaneously quantitating two nucleoside contents, which were used to evaluate Cordyceps products.
Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate difference in fascicle behavior of the medial gastrocnemius during the locomotion with varying intensities, such as gait and one-legged and two-legged vertical jumping. Methods : Six subjects (3 males and 3 females; age: $27.2{\pm}1.6yrs.$, body mass: $62.8{\pm}9.8kg$, height: $169.6{\pm}8.5cm$) performed normal gait (G) at preferred speed and maximum vertical jumping with one (OJ) and two (TJ) legs. While subjects were performing the given tasks, the hip, knee and ankle joint motion and ground reaction force was monitored using a 8-infrared camera motion analysis system with two forceplates. Simultaneously, electromyography of the triceps surae muscles, and the fascicle length of the medial gastrocnemius were recorded using a real-time ultrasound imaging machine. Results : Comparing to gait, the kinematic and kinetic parameters of TJ and OJ were found to be significantly different. Along with those parameters, change in the medial gastrocnemius (MG) muscle-tendon complex (MTC) length ($50.57{\pm}6.20mm$ for TJ and $44.14{\pm}5.39mm$ for OJ) and changes in the fascicle length of the MG ($18.97{\pm}3.58mm$ for TJ and $20.31{\pm}4.59mm$ for OJ) were observed. Although the total excursion of the MTC and the MG fascicle length during the two types of jump were not significantly different, however the pattern of length changes were found to be different. For TJ, the fascicle length maintained isometric longer during the propulsive phase than OJ. Conclusion : One-legged and two-legged vertical jumping use different muscle-tendon interaction strategies.
Tendon elasticity is an important factor affecting muscle function and thus human movements. It has been reported that the mechanical properties of tendon are adaptable to external loading condition. Based on the adaptability of muscle and tendon to external loading conditions, one can assume that there might be an optimum ratio between muscle strength and tendon stiffness. The present study aimed to investigate whether there is correlation between plantar flexor muscle strength and stiffness of the achilles tendon (AT). Twenty two male subjects (age: $23.2{\pm}1.5yrs$, height: $175.5{\pm}6.2cm$, weight: $75.4{\pm}9.8kg$) performed maximum voluntary isometric plantarflexion on a custom-built dynamometer and muscle-tendon junction of the medial gastrocnemius muscle was simultaneously monitored using a real-time ultrasound imaging machine. The averages of muscle force and tendon stiffness were $366.38{\pm}79.37N$, $35.34{\pm}10.42N/mm$, respectively. Significant positive correlation was observed between muscle strength and tendon stiffness (r=0.8507), indicating that the muscle force is proportional to tendon stiffness. The results might have been used in computational modeling and criterion of training progress level in the fields of training and rehabilitation.
