  • Ultrasound is widely used in the medical field for non-destructive and non-invasive disease diagnosis. In order to improve the disease diagnosis accuracy of diagnostic medical images, improving spatial resolution is a very important factor. In this study, we aim to model the super resolution convolutional neural network (SRCNN) algorithm in ultrasound images and analyze its applicability in the medical diagnostic field. The study was conducted as an experimental study using Field II simulation and open source clinical liver hemangioma ultrasound imaging. The proposed SRCNN algorithm was modeled so that end-to-end learning can be applied from low resolution (LR) to high resolution. As a result of the simulation, we confirmed that the full width at half maximum in the phantom image using a Field II program was improved by 41.01% compared to LR when SRCNN was used. In addition, the peak to signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity index (SSIM) evaluation results showed that SRCNN had the excellent value in both simulated and real liver hemangioma ultrasound images. In conclusion, the applicability of SRCNN to ultrasound images has been proven, and we expected that proposed algorithm can be used in various diagnostic medical fields.

  • Programmable FIR filters are used in various signal processing tasks in medical ultrasound imaging, which are one of the major factors increasing hardware complexity. A widely used method to reduce the hardware complexity of a programmable FIR filter is to encode the filter coefficients in the canonic signed digit (CSD) format to minimize the number of nonzero digits (NZD) so that the multipliers for each filter coefficients can be replaced with fixed shifters and programmable multiplexers (PM). In this paper, a new structure for programmable FIR filters with a improved frequency response and a reduced hardware complexity compared to the conventional shift-and-add architecture using PM is proposed for implementing a very small portable ultrasound scanner. The CSD codes are optimized such that there exists at least one common nonzero digit between neighboring coefficients. Such common digits are then implemented with the same shifters. For comparison, synthesisable VHDL models for programmable FIR filters are developed based on the proposed and the conventional architectures. When these filters have the same hardware complexity, pass-band ana stop-band ripples of the proposed filter are lower than those of the conventional filter by about $0.01{\sim}0.19dB$ and by about $5{\sim}10dB$, respectively. For the same filter performance, the hardware complexity of the proposed architecture is reduced by more than 20% compare to the conventional SaA architecture.

  • The need for video diagnosis in medicine has been increased and real-time transfer of digital video will be an important component in PACS and telemedicine. But, Network environment has certain limitations that the required throughput can not satisfy quality of service (QoS). MPEG-4 ratified as a moving video standard by the ISO/IEC provides very efficient video coding covering the various ranges of low bit-rate in network environment. We implemented MPEG-4 CODEC (coder/decoder) and applied various compression ratios to moving ultrasound images. These images were displayed in random order on a client monitor passed through network. Radiologists determined subjective opinion scores for evaluating clinically acceptable image quality and then these were statistically processed in the t-Test method. Moreover the MPEG-4 decoded images were quantitatively analyzed by computing peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) to objectively evaluate image quality. The bit-rate to maintain clinically acceptable image quality was up to 0.8Mbps. We successfully implemented the adaptive throughput or bit-rate relative to the image quality of ultrasound sequences used MPEG-4 that can be applied for diagnostic performance in real-time.

  • We intended to measure the IT, MT, and the IMT of carotid artery separately and tried to analyze the clinical significance. Two hundred and fifty consecutive patients (125 males, 125 females) underwent carotid artery scanning using high-resolution ultrasound. The images were off-line analyzed using B-mode ultrasound image processing, devised in our research. We measured the IT, MT, and IMT semi-automatically at the far wall of designated 1cm length of the right common carotid and calculated the average values over the 200 points. The IT (p < 0.05), MT (p < 0.05) as well as IMT (p < 0.01) of patients with atherosclerotic disease were significantly thicker than that of the patients without atherosclerotic disease. Patients with hypertension showed significantly thicker IT (p < 0.05), MT (p < 0.01), and IMT (p < 0.01) than that of the patients without hypertension. However, only IT was thicker in patients with smoking (p < 0.05) than that of the patients without smoking. Smoking was associated only with intima while hypertension was associated with the all three layer's thickness. This result suggests the atherosclerotic process can be different by cardiovascular risk factors.

  • Recently, an ultrasound hologram and its applications have gained attention in the ultrasound research field. However, the determination technique of transmit signal phases, which generate a hologram, has not been significantly advanced from the previous algorithms which are time-consuming iterative methods. Thus, we applied the deep learning technique, which has been previously adopted to generate an optical hologram, to generate an ultrasound hologram. We further examined the Deep learning-based Holographic Ultrasound Generation algorithm (Deep-HUG). We implement the U-Net-based algorithm and examine its generalizability by training on a dataset, which consists of randomly distributed disks, and testing on the alphabets (A-Z). Furthermore, we compare the Deep-HUG with the previous algorithm in terms of computation time, accuracy, and uniformity. It was found that the accuracy and uniformity of the Deep-HUG are somewhat lower than those of the previous algorithm whereas the computation time is 190 times faster than that of the previous algorithm, demonstrating that Deep-HUG has potential as a useful technique to rapidly generate an ultrasound hologram for various applications.

  • To measure the velocity of heart wall and local flow transctaneously in blood vessels, we have developed a single channel 3.1 MHz pulsed ultrasonic Doppler velocity meter. Ultrasound pluse width and repetition frequency (PRF) used in the velocity meter is 1 ${\mu}$sec 6kHz reapectively, and the Doppler shift of the backscattered echo signal is sensed in a phase detector by coherent demodulation method. From the output of the phase detector, the Doppler signal corresponding to the mean velocity of acoustic wave scatterers over a small region is obtained by using a range gate, sample holder and band-pass filter. Mean frequency of Doppler signal is estimated by zero-crossing counter and the instantaneous velocity of scatters is displayed as a function of time. It is possible to estimate velocity profile, volume flow and flow acceleration of vessels in man if the number of channels and range resolution in increased.

  • A 64-year-old woman visited our pain clinic with the pain of right lateral side of thigh for one year. Her pain always started from knee and was radiated to buttock area when symptom was severe. She showed significant tenderness at knee lateral side and local tightness at lateral thigh. Magnetic resonance image of the knee was performed and we could identify high signal intensity of iliotibial band through coronal and axial view. In spite of medication and physical stretching exercise of iliotibial band for one month, she did not show any improvement of pain. To alleviate her symptom, ultrasound guided local corticosteroid injection targeting beneath the iliotibial band was performed. After the procedure, the reduction of pain was significant and there was no need for further management.

  • The lateral resolution in an ultrasound imaging system is one of the most important factors for quality of the image and is determined by the beam focusing. For the better lateral resolution SDF(Sampled Delay Focusing) capable of digital focusing was proposed. The second-order sampling, one of band-width sampling methods, is suggested as being the best suitable for SDF because it allows total digital processing and is simple and economical. By proving that it introduces too much error, this article shows the second-order sampling is not appropriate for sampling of the wide-band signal generally used in ultrasound imaging systems. Also, this article suggests new sampling methods that maintain the advantages and reduce the unavoidable errors of the second-order sampling method. From computer simulation it is expected that the proposed methods reduce the errors of the second-order sampling method and can be used in real applications.

  • Ultrasonic attenuation is an important parameter in Quantitative Ultrasound and many algorithms have been proposed to improve estimation accuracy and repeatability for multiple independent estimates. In this work, we propose an improved algorithm for estimating ultrasonic attenuation utilizing the optimal frequency compounding technique based on stochastic noise model. We formulate mathematical compounding equations in the AWGN channel model and solve optimization problems to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio for multiple frequency components. Individual estimates are calculated by the reference phantom method which provides very stable results in uniformly attenuating regions. We also propose the guideline to select frequency ranges of reflected RF signals. Simulation results using numerical phantoms show that the proposed optimal frequency compounding method provides improved accuracy while minimizing estimation bias. The estimation variance is reduced by only 16% for the un-compounding case, whereas it is reduced by 68% for the uniformly compounding case. The frequency range corresponding to the half-power for reflected signals also provides robust and efficient estimation performance.
