  • To measure burning rate of solid propellants using ultrasound, a special closed bomb and an ultrasonic and pressure measurement system are fabricated. During pressurization tests and homing tests on propellants, ultrasonic and pressure signal are acquired in real time fashion by this system. Based on acquired signals, analysis programs using two different algorithm which can measure burning rates corresponding to pressures are compared. One algorithm is to correct sound velocity variation of propellants and solid couplant, another one is only to correct sound velocity variation of propellants. And accuracies of homing rates measured through these algorithms are calculated through comparison with the burning rates measured using strand burner method.

  • In order to successfully exploit underwater resources, the first step would be a marine environmental research and exploration on the seafloor. Traditionally one sets up a long-term underwater experimental unit on the seafloor and retrieves the unit later after a certain period time. Essential to these applications is the reliable teleoperation and telemetering of the unit. This study presents ultrasonic-wave remote control system and an underwater sound recognition algorithm that can identify the sound signal without the influence of disturbances due to underwater environmental changes. The proposed method provides a means suitable for units which require low power dissipation and long-time underwater operation. We demonstrate its ability of securing stability and fast sound recognition through experimental methods.

  • This paper discribes the reflector type ultrasonic concentrator which makes hghintencity of ultrasonic field. This was made by rotating parabolic surface which only using total reflection aria, that makes boundary by the critical angle of reflection of sound. I made two binds of concentrator acording to the type of ultrasonic transduser: one is internal surface reflector type concentrator, which is available for disc type transducer, and the other is external surface reflector type concentrator which is available cylinderical transduser. In the mony aspects the reflector tripe concentrator is supel'ier to the reflection type concentrator as plastics lens; It is more durable in high temperature and high intencity ultrasonicfield then refrector type concentrator because of it is made by glass or metal, and it has higher. efficiency because of it wasts made by only total reflection aria that is without absoption lose. I think this is useful ultrasonic concentrator in mony industrial field, in which high intencitr of ultrasonic energy was used.

  • Sound focusing technologies has been studied for various purposes from early 1990s. As a result, these technologies make us possible to apply in many uses. For example, we can treat tumors using focused ultrasonic waves without surgical knife and communicate in the ocean using time reversal array. Also applications for personal audio system become issues. Recently, as technologies are developing, in some applications, needs for regional focusing become increasing because previously suggested focusing methods, such as phase conjugation, time reversal and inverse filtering, were all about a point focusing. Therefore, studies on regional focusing method are essentially needed. Regional focusing method was firstly mentioned by Choi and Kim in 2002: acoustic contrast control. However, in regional focusing, physical interpretations between control variables and results are still not easy because of its complexity. In this regard, we tried to understand the relations between control variables and results in wavenumber domain and suggested a solution method for regional focusing: wavenumber spectrum matching. We also showed how to make spatially focused sound shape using the suggested method from the simplest case: line focusing.

  • Intra-Vascular Ultra-Sound (IVUS) transducers were developed for the application to diagnose coronary diseases. The transducer consists of 32 piezoelectric elements with a front insulation layer and a polymeric acoustic backing layer on a hollow alumina tube. The optimal geometrical structure of the transducer was designed through theoretical analysis of radiation patterns of the transducer. Samples of the IVUS transducers of the diameter of 3㎜ were fabricated to illustrate the design scheme. For the piezoelectric elements, 2-2 mode piezocomposite materials were employed. Experimental performance of the transducers showed good agreement with the design results, which verified feasibility of the transducer for IVUS applications.

  • This paper presents a simple, practical, and efficient method for estimating the speed of sound in reflection mode in ultrasound medical imaging. Its accurate determination is indispensable in order to obtain both good resolution and correct geometrical and volumetric information about human organs such as heart and kidney. Up to now, there have been several methods available, but they all suffer from either poor performance or high complexity. The proposed method finds out an optimum focusing delay profile in such a way that the brightness in a region of interest is maximized using continuous dynamic focusing in receive under fixed transmit focusing. Experiments carried out on a real ultrasound medical phantom reveals that the method a quite simple and effective in providing good speed of sound estimation, hence improved resolution and images, adding to dignostic utility.

  • This study is performed to establish a non-destructive evaluation method for metal matrix composite using ultrasonic technique. The specimen is made of SiC/AC8A metal matrix composite by squeeze-casting method. Three kinds or reinforced particles are prepared as 4.86, 8.09 and $11.44{\mu}m$ to investigate the effect of size on the mechanical and ultrasonic properties of metal matrix composite. In addition, four different volume fractions (14, 22.5, 27.5, 35%) of reinforced particles are prepared per each size to examine the effect of volume fraction on the ultrasonic properties. From this specimen, the availability and precision of measurement of Young's modulus are examined and the evaluation method for microstructure of metar matrix composite using the speed of sound and attenuation factor is also reviewed. The results show that the Young's modulus measured by ultrasonic method is as effective as that measured by mechanical method. It is also known that the size and volume fraction of reinforced fiber are precisely evaluated using the speed of sound and attenuation factor.

  • Determination of sound source characteristics such as: sound volume, direction and distance to the source is one of the important techniques for unmanned systems like autonomous vehicles, robot systems and AI speakers. There are multiple methods of determining the direction and distance to the sound source, e.g., using a radar, a rider, an ultrasonic wave and a RF signal with a sound. These methods require the transmission of signals and cannot accurately identify sound sources generated in the obstructed region due to obstacles. In this paper, we have implemented and evaluated a method of detecting and identifying the sound in the audible frequency band by a method of recognizing the volume, direction, and distance to the sound source that is generated in the periphery including the invisible region. A cross-shaped based sound source recognition algorithm, which is mainly used for identifying a sound source, can measure the volume and locate the direction of the sound source, but the method has a problem with "blind spots". In addition, a serious limitation for this type of algorithm is lack of capability to determine the distance to the sound source. In order to overcome the limitations of this existing method, we propose a QRAS-based algorithm that uses rectangular-shaped technology. This method can determine the volume, direction, and distance to the sound source, which is an improvement over the cross-shaped based algorithm. The QRAS-based algorithm for the OSSD uses 6 AITDs derived from four microphones which are deployed in a rectangular-shaped configuration. The QRAS-based algorithm can solve existing problems of the cross-shaped based algorithms like blind spots, and it can determine the distance to the sound source. Experiments have demonstrated that the proposed QRAS-based algorithm for OSSD can reliably determine sound volume along with direction and distance to the sound source, which avoiding blind spots.

  • Densities (${\rho}$), Viscosities (${\eta}$) and ultrasonic speeds (u) of pure acetophenone (AP), propiophenone (PP), $p$-methyl acetophenone ($p$-MeAP), $p$-chloroacetophenone ($p$-ClAP) and those of their binary mixtures with $N$-ethyl aniline ($N$-EA) as a common component, were measured at 303.15 K over the entire composition range. These experimental data were used to calculate the excess volume $V^E$, deviation in ultrasonic speeds ${\Delta}u$, isentropic compressibility $K_s$, intermolecular free length $L_f$, acoustic impedance Z, deviations in isentropic compressibility ${\Delta}K_s$, deviation in viscosity ${\Delta}{\eta}$ and excess Gibbs free energy of activation of viscous flow ($G^{*E}$) at all mole fractions of $N$-ethyl aniline. These parameters, especially excess functions, are found to be quite sensitive towards the intermolecular interactions between component molecules. Theoretical values of viscosity of the binary mixtures were calculated using different empirical relations and theories. The relative merits of these relations and theories were discussed. The experimental results were correlated by using the polynomial proposed by Redlich-Kister equation.

  • This work experimentally studies the fundamental mechanisms by which the ultrasonic vibration enhances convection and pool boiling heat transfer. A thin platinum wire is used as both a heat source and a temperature sensor. A high speed video imaging system is employed to observe the behavior of cavitation and thermal bubbles. It is found that when the liquid temperature is below its boiling point, cavitation takes place due to ultrasonic vibration while cavitation disappears when the liquid reaches the boiling point. Moreover, when the gas dissolved in liquid is removed by pre-degassing, the cavitation arises only locally. Depending on the liquid temperature, heat transfer rates in convection, subcooled boiling and saturated boiling regimes are examined. In convection heat transfer regime, fully agitated cavitation is the most efficient heat transfer enhancement mechanism. Subcooled boiling is most enhanced when tile local cavitation is induced after degassing. In saturated boiling regime, acoustic pressure is shown to be a dominant heat transfer enhancement mechanism.
