The ultrasonic guided wave propagates along with the given structure's wall direction. Because of this specific character, the ultrasonic guided waves arc used in many other fields. Especially, it can be readily utilized for nondestructive inspection of various structures that are made up of gas pipes, heat exchanger tubes, and thin plates. Further, the guided wave technology can be readily utilized when inspecting pipes or thin plates which pose high risk of the accident but for which the nondestructive inspection itself is impossible because it is difficult to get to them since they are coated or buried underground. In the other hand, conventional ultrasonic testing such as thickness gauging uses bulk waves and only tests the region of structure immediately below the transducer. As a result of the application about inlet and outlet cooling water line using guided wave test, we conformed that the overall corrosions were in the lower side of the 304.8 mm inlet valve and these corrosions were engaged in not locally but through the lower side of the valve line. In the near future, we can expect that the detectable defect size is smaller than before along with the development of the sensing technology.
It is well recognized that the ultrasonic method is one of the most common and reliable nondestructive testing (NDT) methods for the quantitative estimation of defects in welded structures. However, NDT techniques applying for adhesively bonded joints have not been clearly established yet. In this paper, the detection of interface crack by the ultrasonic method was applied for the measurement of interfacial crack length in the adhesively bonded joints of double-cantilever beam (DCB). An optimal condition of transmission coefficients and experimental accuracy by the ultrasonic method in the adhesively bonded joints have been investigated and discussed. The experimental values are in good agreement with the computed results by boundary element method (BEM) and Ripling's equation.

Space launch vehicles require highly reliable, lightweight structures. It is thus important to monitor the structural health of these components with nondestructive inspections. In this paper, we studied an example of a nondestructive inspection that was partially applied to the manufacture and inspection of a launch vehicle. Ultrasonic tests, X-rays, tapping, and acoustic emissions comprised the inspection method. A payload fairing, high pressure tank, fastener part, and bonding part were used as hardware to be inspected. We proposed a quantitative standard for debonding inspection of the payload fairing and acoustic emission data for the proof test of the high pressure tank. We analyzed the fracture mode of the sandwich fastener part according to frequency changes. We also proposed a standard specimen for ultrasonic inspection of bonds of different materials. The present analyses and results provide data for evaluation of the launch operation sequence to ensure launch vehicles afford high reliability.

The rubber side could be contaminated using the existing pulse echo method because the ultrasonic wave was incident on the rubber side from the interior of the steel motor case, which could lead to the critical disbond defect. To develop the test method which can be replaced the existing method, the ultrasonic wave was incident on steel face of the steel/rubber adhesive test block. Rubber resonance frequencies measured from the steel/rubber adhesive test block were in good agreement with theoretically predicted rubber resonance frequencies. This paper was described about the ultrasonic resonance method to convert the rubber resonance frequency into the rubber thickness.

The object of this study is to evaluate and discriminate nondestructively the dislocation substructures of Cu and Cu-Zn alloy subjected to the low-cycle-fatigue. The ultrasonic wave velocity, electrical resistivity and positron annhilation lifetime(PAL) were measured to the nondestructive testing. Cyclic fatigue test of Cu and Cu-Zn alloy with much different stacking fault energies was conducted and the correlations between dislocation behavior and nondestructive parameters were studied. Dislocation cell substructure was developed in Cu, while planar array of dislocation structure was developed in Cu-35Zn alloy only increasing dislocation density with fatigue cycles. Decrease in ultrasonic wave velocity, increase in electrical resistivity and PAL were shown because of the development of lattice defects, dislocations and vacancies, by cyclic fatigue at room temperature. In contrast to Cu-Zn alloy of the planar-array dislocation substructure showing continuous changes in the nondestructive parameters, it does not make any noticeable changes in the nondestructive parameters after the evolution of dislocation cell substructure in Cu.

The application of adhesively bonded components is increasing in various industries such as automobile, aircraft, IC packages, and soldering techniques. In spite of such wide application in adhesively bonded components, nondestructive test techniques applying to adhesively bonded components have not been clearly established yet. In this paper, characteristics of ultrasonic test on interfaces of adhesively bonded components have been investigated by calculating transmission coefficient theoretically and experimentally. From the experimental results, the optimum conditions to establish frequencies for adhesively bonded homogeneous and dissimilar components are 4∼6 MHz and 2∼4 MHz, respectively.

It is well recognized that improving capacity of positive grid in battery is one of key factors for controlling the expected long lift-time of Battery Energy Storage System(B.E.S.S). Thus it is really important to characterized material properties of positive grid which are mainly affected by fabrication process. In this study, two kinds of positive grids, which were fabricated by gravity casting and die-casting technique were used. Micro-structural observation and tensile test were conducted to investigate the effect of fabrication process of positive grid. Ultrasonic measurement based on pulse-echo method and ultrasonic C-scan technique also performed to correlate ultrasonic velocity with porosity ratio in positive grid. It was found that the porosity ratio of grid fabricated by gravity casting technique increased significantly compared to the grid fabricated by die-casting technique. It was also shown that ulrasonic technique is effective to evaluate the porosity ratio in positive grid.

Numerical modeling of a nondestructive testing system plays an important role in many aspects of quantitative nondestructive evaluation (QNDE). The ultimate goal of a model is to predict test results for a specific flaw in a material. Thus, in ultrasonic testing, a system model should include the transducer, its radiation pattern, the beam reflection and propagation, and scattering from defects. In this paper attention is focused on the scattering model and the scattered fields by defects are observed by an elastodynamic boundary element method. Flaw types addressed are void-like and crack-like flaws. When transverse ultrasonic waves are obliquely incident on the flaw, the angular distribution of far-field scattered displacements are calculated and presented in the form of A-scan mode. The component signals obtained from each scattering problem are identified and their differences are addressed. The numerical results are also compared with those obtained by high frequency approximate solutions.
Friction welding has been shown to have significant economic and technical advantages. However, one of the major concerns in using friction welding is the reliability of the weld quality. No reliable nondestructive test method is available at present for detecting weld quality, particularly in a production environment. Friction welds are formed by the mechanisms of diffusion as well as mechanical interlocking. The severe plastic flow at the interface by forge action of the process brings the subsurfaces so close together that detection of any unbonded area becomes very difficult. This paper presents an attempt to determine the friction weld strength quantitatively using the ultrasonic pulse-echo method. Instead of detecting flaws or cracks at the interface, the new approach calculates the coefficient of reflection based on measured amplitudes of the echoes. It has been finally confirmed that this coefficient could provide the quantitative relationship to the weld quality such as tensile strength, torsional strength, impact value, hardness, etc. So a new nondestructive analysis system of friction weld strength of dissimilar metals using an ultrasonic technique could be well developed.
