  • This paper shows error in the polarization direction on ultrasonic transducers how sensitive the shear ultrasonic waves are to a little misoriented plies according to the angle variation of shear ultrasonic waves $0{\circ},\;45{\circ}$ and $90{\circ}$. Also, it is shown that shear waves, particularly the transmission mode with the transmitter and receiver perpendicular to cach other, have high sensitivity for detecting anomalies in fiber orientation and ply layup sequence that may occur in the manufacturing of composite laminates. Experimental results are agreed with a modeling solutions which was based on decomposition of shear wave polarization vector as it propagates through the composite laminates. This wave appeared considerably to be sensitive to CFRP composites to thickness direction along in-plane fibers.

  • The paper deals with the accuracy comparison between two kinds of ultrasonic paths for flow rate measurement. In the Z-path, two transducers are installed on the opposite sides of each other on a pipe, and the ultrasonic waves generated at one transducer propagate to arrive at the other one only by refraction. In the V-path, two transducers are installed on one side of a pipe, and the ultrasonic waves reflected at the inner wall of the pipe are received. Transit times were confirmed to identify the propagation paths by comparing the theoretically calculated results and measured ones. The flow rate measurements with two kinds of ultrasonic paths appeared very similar. It would be possible to select either of the paths by considering the advantages and disadvantages.

  • Non-contact detection of internal defects in a rail using ultrasonic waves is discussed in this paper. Cracks in a rail may be the cause of a serious railway accident such as derailment if left undetected. Concurrent rail inspection method based on ultrasonic testing using piezoelectric transducers has several limitations as it should keep physical contact with the rail. This work suggests a non-contact detection of internal defects in a rail using ElectroMagnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMAT) which can produce and measure ultrasonic waves in a rail without any couplant. The EMATs for rail inspection are designed and fabricated and their working performance is verified through a series of experiments on various types of internal defects in test rails. The effect of lift-off between the transducers and the rail on the generated signals is also discussed.

  • The paper deals with an ultrasonic transducer invented for measuring both flow velocity and pipe thickness. The structure of the transducer is based on the conventional transducers for measuring flow velocity by obliquely transmitting ultrasonic waves to the flow direction. The transducer additionally generates ultrasonic waves transmitting vertically to a pipe for measuring pipe thickness. By measuring flow velocity with the invented transducer and a conventional oblique-incidence transducer and comparing their results, the accuracy of the flow velocity measurement of the invented one was evaluated. By measuring specimen thickness with the invented transducer and a conventional normal-incidence transducer and comparing their results, the accuracy of the thickness measurement of the invented one was evaluated.

  • Application fields of ultrasonic transducers can be divided into two categories, a high ultrasonic resolution required field and a high ultrasonic power required field. This paper is aimed to determine the optimal properties of the matching layers of the transducer for each of the applications. Further, it is aimed to optimize the properties of the matching layers that show satisfactory performances for both of the application fields. Through the direct time domain analysis of the transmission and reflection behavior of the ultrasonic wave, apart from the conventional equivalent circuit analysis, and Fourier transformation of its results, we found the optimum acoustic impedances of the matching layers. The newly determined layers provide much better transducer performance-57% at most-than those obtained with conventional design methods. Based on the results, we also found the optimal acoustic impedances of the layers good for both of the application fields. For te optimization, we developed a new transducer performance evaluation parameter that can be applied to any type of ultrasonic transducers.

  • Pressure vacuum measurement technique using acoustic impedance change of ultrasonic transducers was studied. The sensor has been setup using two air-coupled ultrasonic transducers, one as a transmitter and the other as a receiver, and put it into vacuum chamber and measured pressure versus ultrasonic amplitude. The result confirms that the standard deviations of four repeat measurements were from 0.0093 to 0.3325 at pressure 6.66 kPa to 202.65 kPa(about two atmosphere), and the relative percents were 0.018% and 0.164% at pressure 133.32 kPa and 202.65 kPa, respectively.

  • The main purpose of this research is to utilize simple mathematical models to depict the vibration behavior and the resulted sound field of a piezoelectric disk for ultrasonic transducers. Instead of using 1-D vibration model, coupled effect between the thickness and the radial motions was considered to be close to the real vibration behavior. Moreover, Huygens-Fresnel principle was used in both incident and reflected waves to analyze the sound field under obstacles in finite distance. Results of the tested piezoelectric disk show that, discrepancies between the simulation and experiment are 2.5% for resonant frequency and 12% for resulted sound field. Therefore, the proposed method can be used to reduce the complexity in modeling vibration problems, and increase the reliability on analyzing piezoeletric transducers in the design stage.

  • The effects of biasing magnetic fields on the performances of magnetostrictive ultrasonic transducers are investigated. The transducers are patch-type ones which are used for SHM of plate structures. Various kinds of configurations of biasing magnets are covered experimentally. It is experimentally verified that how the biasing magnetic field deploys is the most significant factors on maximizing the transducer output. From the magnetostriction curve of nickel, it is concluded qualitatively that it is not the absolute values of biasing magnetic field but the slope of magnetostriction curve to be taken account of.

  • The paper deals with the energy transmission of the elastic waves obliquely transmitting and refracting through a plate and a pipe. By calculating the transmitting ratio depending on the incidence angle, the angle corresponding to the maximum transmission was determined theoretically and considered in the design of ultrasonic transducers for flow velocimetry. Experiments were carried out by using prototypes of the transducers. Experimentally-obtained transmission ratios were compared with and confirmed the theoretically-calculated results.
