  • The ultrasonic method, which is well known as nondestructive test method, is widely used to evaluate the material damage due to degradation. However, this method is just used for measuring the crack size and the thickness loss of the tube. The purpose of this study is to investigate the applicability of the ultrasonic technique for the evaluation of marine diesel engine exhaust valve and to suggest the correlations between the ultrasonic characteristics and valve degradation. From the evaluation of the results obtained, the technique of using the ultrasonic property was founds to be a efficient method to evaluate the degree of marine diesel engine exhaust valve by nondestructive test.

  • Ultrasonic waves have several mechanical, chemical, and biological effects on a saturated soil medium. Their mechanical effects, popularly known as cavitation. Cavitation is the rapid and repeated formation, and resulting implosion, of imcrobubbles in a liquid, resulting in the propagation of microscopic shock waves. In a soil-liquid system, their mechanical effects generate high differntial fluid-particle velocities and microscopic shock waves. The velocity perturbations are capable of dislodging oil in the system by overcoming the forces binding oil to sand particles. In this study, a series of laboratory experiments involving the simple flushing and ultrasonic flushing were carried out. An increase in permeability and oil removal rate were observed in ultrasonic flushing tests. Some practical implications of these results are discussed in terms of technical feasibility of in situ implementation of ultrasonics.

  • Ultrasonic measurement is one of important technologies in the lift-time maintenance of nuclear poler plant. Ultrasonic inspection system is consisted of the operator, equipment and procedure. The reliability of ultrasonic inspection system is affected by its ability. The performance demonstration round robin was conducted to quantify the capability of ultrasonic inspection for in-service. The small number of teams who employed procedures that met or exceeded ASME Sec. XI Code requirements detected the piping of nuclear power plant with various cracks to evaluate the capability of detection and sizing. In this paper, the statistical reliability assessment of ultrasonic nondestructive inspection data using Monte Carlo simulation is presented. The results of the probability of detection (POD) analysis using Monte Carlo simulation are compared to these of logistic probability model. In these results, Monte Carlo simulation was found to be very useful to the reliability assessment f3r the small hit/miss data sets.

  • To investigate characteristics and micro-explosion of single-droplets of emulsified fuel, water is mixed with diesel oil by using ultrasonic energy fuel feeding system. The fuel characteristics is analysed through H-NMR spectrum and micro-explosion phenomena of the emulsified fuel is also investigated. The life times of droplets of conventional diesel fuel, ultrasonic energy added diesel fuel and emulsified fuel we obtained additionally. According to this study, the micro-explosion phenomena of single-droplets happen in atmospheric pressure condition, a curve form of emulsified fuel's life tim is different from diesel fuel's one and the change of chemical structures is a cause of ultrasonic-energy-added diesel fuel effect.

  • This experiment was undertaken to investigate the atomization characteristics of the low viscosity biodiesel blended fuel and ultrasonic energy added one. Test fuels were conventional diesel fuel and biodiesel fuel. We compared to the characteristics of viscosity and surface tension, SMD between low viscosity biodiesel blended fuel and ultrasonic energy added one. Sauter mean diameter was measured under the variation of the spray distance. Viscosity and surface tension was measured under the variation of the time trace. To measure the droplet size, we used the Malvern system 2600C. Droplet size distribution was analyzed from the result data of Malvern system. Through this experiment, we found that the condition of the ultrasonic energy added situation had smaller Sauter mean diameter of droplet, viscosity and surface tension than that of the conventional situation.

  • Ultrasonic sensors have been widely used to recognize the working environment for a mobile robot. However, their intrinsic problems, such as specular reflection, wide beam angle, and slow propagation velocity, require an excessive number of sensors to be integrated for achieving the sensing goal. This paper proposes a new measurement scheme which uses only two sets of ultrasonic sensors to determine the location and the type of a target surface. By measuring the time difference between the returned signals from the target surface, which are generated by two transmitters with 1 ㎳ difference, it classifies the type and determines the size of the target surface. Since the proposed sensor system uses only two sets of ultrasonic sensors to recognize and localize the target surface, it significantly simplifies the sensing system and reduces the signal processing time so that the working environment can be recognized in real time.

  • Welding and/or fusion in polyethylene(PE) system made on site is focused on the control of the welding or fusion process to follow proper procedure. The process control is important, but it is not sufficient for the long term reliability of a pipe system. To achieve the rate of failure close to zero, Non Destructive Testing(NDT) is necessary in addition to joining process control. For electrofusion joints several non-destructive testing methods are available. The ultrasonic phased array technique is possible to detect various defects including wire deviations and regions with lack of fusion. In this studies, testing was carried to detect the defect after electrofusion joining of polyethylene piping is utilized by the ultrasonic phased array technique. From testing data, ultrasonic phased array technique is recommended as a reliable non-destructive testing method.

  • An experiment was conducted to figure out the atomization characteristics of a highly viscous biodiesel fuel with rice-barn oil applying and ultrasonic energy into it. A spray simulator for the droplet atomization, an ultrasonic system, and six different nozzles(3 pintle-type nozzles and 3 single hole-type nozzles) were made. To investigate effects of ultrasonic energy in a highly viscous liquid fuel, an immersion liquid method was used as a measurement method on droplet size distributions. It was found that the ultrasonic energy was effective for the atomization improvement of the rice-bran oil as a highly viscous biodiesel fuel and the factor나 such as the nozzle opening pressure, pin-edge angles, hole diameters, and collection distances affected the atomization of spray droplets.

  • The cutting mechanism of ultrasonic vibration machining is characterized as two phases, that is, an impact at the cutting edge and a reduction of cutting force due to non-contact interval between tool and workpiece. In this paper, in order to identify cutting dynamics of a system with ultrasonically vibrated cutting tool, an ARMA modeling is performed on experimental cutting force signals which have a dominant effect on cutting dynamics. The aim of this study is, through Dynamic Date System methodology, to find the inherent characteristics of an ultrasonic vibration cutting process by considering natural frequency and damping coefficient. Surface roughness and stability of cutting process under ultrasonic vibration are also considered

  • Ultrasonic testing for welds is widely used to ensure the integrity of facilities in NPPs. Automated ultrasonic testing(AUT) is more consistent than the manual ultrasonic testing(MUT). It can scan welded parts, examines the scanned images, and saves the results as data files. AUT in NPPs is making use of commercial systems, and there has been some difficulties in calibration of the system. An AUT system is developed. It comprises of pulser/receiver, scanner and a control program(SonicWizard). The performance demonstration for piping welds in NPPs and the piping wall thickness measurement on site were conducted to verify this system. The test results of the ultrasonic testing system developed is satisfactory and effective.
