This paper proposes a method of measuring and visualizing the elasticity distribution of the human soft tissue to detect tumors or cancers which have been difficult to diagnose in conventional medical ultrasonic B-mode images. To measure the stiffness of soft tissue, first, pressure is applied to deform the tissue being imaged, and then the amount of mechanical displacement is determined from correlation coefficients obtained from ultrasonic data downconverted into the baseband. We confirmed the feasibility of imaging tissue stiffness by computer simulation and experiment.
An experiment on the enhancement of turbulent flow with ultrasonic forcing was carried out by using PIV measurement in a coaxial circular pipe which could offer characteristics of the turbulence flow plentifully through its jet. A large transparent acryl tank and a coaxial circular pipe nozzle were made for the above research. city water of $25^{\circ}C$ was selected as an experimental liquid and the front flow field of the coaxial circular pipe was divided vertically as 3 measuring regions to observe characteristics of flow phenomena. characteristics of fluid flow such as velocity vector distribution, kinetic energy, turbulent intensity and etc. were visualized, observed, examined and considered at 5 kinds of Re No. such as $Re=1{\times}10^3,\;2{\times}10^3,\;3{\times}10^3,\;5{\times}10^3,\;1{\times}10^4$. In result it was proved that ultrasonic vibration affected the enhancement of turbulent flow.

The dissipation of high-power ultrasonic energy at the faces of the defect causes an increase in temperature. It is resulted from localized selective heating in the vicinity of cracks because of the friction effect. In this paper the measurement of size and direction of crack using UET(Ultrasound Excitation Thermography) is described. The ultrasonic pulse energy is injected into the sample in one side. The hot spot, which is a small area around the crack tip and heated up highly, is observed. The hot spot, which is estimated as the starting point of the crack, is seen in the nearest position from the ultrasonic excitation point. Another ultrasonic pulse energy is injected into the sample in the opposite side. The hot spot, the ending point of the crack, is seen in the closest distance from the injection point also. From the calculation of the coordinates of both the first hot spot and the second hot spot observed, the size and slope of the crack is estimated. In the experiment of STS fatigue crack specimen(thickness 14mm), the size and the direction of the crack was measured.

In this paper, we report a novel algorithm based on phase displacement, which supplements conventional TOF methods for distance measurement using an ultrasonic wave. The proposed algorithm roughly measures the distance between the transmission part and the receiving part by using the initial TOF. Thereafter, the precise distance is determined by measuring the phase displacement value between the synchronizing transmission signal and the signal obtained at the receiving end. A distance measurement experiment using a micrometer was performed to verify the accuracy of the ultrasonic wave sensor system. We found that the mean errors from the one adopting the distance measurement algorithm based on phase displacement varied from a minimum of 0.03 mm to a maximum of 0.09 mm. In addition, the standard deviation varied from a minimum of 0.04 mm to a maximum of 0.07 mm, thus giving a precision of ${\pm}0.1$ mm.
The temperature measurement of yen high temperature core melt is of importance in LAVA (Lower-plenum Arrested Vessel Attack) experiment in which gap formation between core melt and the reactor lower head, and the effect of the gap on thermal behavior are to be measured. The delay time of ultrasonic wavelets due to high temperature is suggested. As a first stage, a molten material temperature was measured up to 2300℃. Also, the optimization design of the ultrasonic temperature sensor with persistence at the high temperature was suggested in this paper. And the utilization of the theory suggested in the reference〔1〕and the efficiency of the developed system are certified by performing experiments. This sensor welded magnetostrictive element and tungsten element will be able to measure a temperature range of 3000℃ hereafter.
Using a developed mathematical model and calibrated kinetic constants, numerical experiments for a aerobic digestion of wastewater sludge by SBR aerobic digestion process combined with ultrasonication (USSBR) were performed in this study. It simulated well the phenomena of the decomposition of particulate organics and the release of organic nitrogen and transformation. To achieve 40 % of particulate organics removal, USSBR process requires only 6 days of SRT and 14 W/L of ultrasonic power whereas SBR aerobic digestion process requires 12 days of SRT. Based on the model simulation results, an empirical equation was presented here. This equation will be used to predict digestion efficiency for the given variables of SRT and ultrasonic power dose. USSBR aerobic digestion process can reduce the nitrogen concentration. The optimal operation strategy for the simultaneous removal of solids and soluble nitrogen in this process is estimated to 7 days of SRT with 14 W/L of ultrasonic power dose while anoxic period was 6 hours out of 24 hours of cycle time. In this condition, 40 % of particulate organics as well as 36 % of total nitrogen will be removed and the soluble nitrogen concentration of the centrate will be lower less then 40 mg/L.

This study presents the possibility of scratch reduction on wafer in CMP by applying the ultrasonic and megasonic energy into the slurry which might contain large abrasive particles. Experiments were conducted to verify the dispersion ability of agglomerated particles by applying ultrasonic, megasonic waves and analyze the particle distribution of used slurry in case, of sonic energy assisted or none. And the dispersion stability of megasonic waves was investigated through the experiment of stability of the dispersed slurry, Finally, to confirm that the distribution of particles in slurry by ultrasonic waves was actually related to scratches on wafer when CMP was done, tungsten blanket wafer was processed, by CMP to compare and investigate scratches on wafer.

The reformed bio-diesel fuel irradiated by the ultrasonic wave is applied to the diesel engine of common rail in common use recently. This study has the object to examine the properties of engine performance and discharged materials. The bio-diesel fuel is mixed and used with the diesel fuel in common use at the ratio of $20\%\;or\; 100\%$. The ultrasonic energy is irradiated to the individually mixed fuel in order to reform the fuel. This fuel is applied to the engine in this experiment. And It is compared and analyzed from the experimental results with two cases irradiating the ultrasonic wave and no irradiating.
Worldwide, studies on intelligent vehicles for the convenience of drivers have been actively conducted as the number of cars has increased. However, vehicle convenience enabled by buttons lowers the concentration on driving and hence poses as a huge threat to the safety of the driver. The use of one of the convenient features, impaired driving auxiliary equipment, is limited because of its complex usage, and this device also hinders the front view of the driver. This paper proposes a vehicle-control device for controlling the convenient features as well as changes in speed and direction using gestures and motions of the driver. This device consists of an ultrasonic sensor for recognizing movement, an arduino for accepting signal control functions and servo and DC motors apply to various vehicle parts. Firstly, the vehicle-control device was designed using a 3D CAD program known as Solid-works based on the size of the steering wheel. Then, through simulations, a suitable length for minimizing the absorbent between ultrasonic sensors was confirmed using a program known as COMSOL Multiphysics. Finally, simulation results were verified through experiments, and the optimal size of the device was identified through the number of errors.

In this paper, a flat-type $L_{-}$-$B_{8}$ mode Ultrasonic Motor[USM] having the size of 80 x 20 x ${1.5}mm^3$($l{\times}\omega{\times}t$) was designed and fabricated to examine the characteristics of an ultrasonic vibration. We used ANSYS simulation program based on FEM to get the optimum design of this USM. As results of experiment, the fastest speed of revolution(v), the maximum torque(T) and the efficiency(n) were 37.5cm/s, 5.0 mN.m and 1.17% when 27.9KHz, 150N, 50V were applied respectively. And this flat-type $L_{-}$-$B_{8}$ mode USM could be controlled the speed of rotor revolution by applied voltage, frequency and pre-load of rotor as well as showed the characteristics of typical drooping torque-speed, large torque and high speed. So, we think that this flat-type $L_{-}$-$B_{8}$ mode USM has characteristics of enough torque and velocity to be usable for applications in forwarding device of an electric card or a paper, etc.
