  • This study investigates the vibration characteristics of a wire-bonding piezoelectric transducer and ultrasonic horn for high-speed and precise welding. A ring-type piezoelectric stack actuator is excited at 136 kHz to vibrate a conical-type horn and capillary system. The nodal lines and amplification ratio of the ultrasonic horn are obtained using a theoretical analysis and FEM simulation. The vibration modes and frequencies close to the driving frequency are identified to evaluate the bonding performance of the current wire-bonder system. The FEM and experimental results show that the current wire-bonder system uses the bending mode of 136 kHz as the principal motion for bonding and that the transverse vibration of the capillary causes the bonding failure. Because the major longitudinal mode exists at 119 kHz, it is recommended that the design of the current wire-bonding system be modified to use the major longitudinal mode at the excitation frequency and to minimize the transverse vibration of capillary in order to improve the bonding performance.

  • Vibration monitoring is required for reliable thermosonic testing to decide whether sufficient vibration is achieved in each test for the detection of cracks. From a practical point of view, a cheaper and convenient monitoring method is better for the application to real tests. Therefore, the performance of different sensors for vibration monitoring was investigated and compared in this study to find a convenient and acceptable measurement method for thermosonics. Velocity measured by a laser vibrometer and strain provide an equivalent HI when measured at the same position. The microphone can provide a cheaper vibration monitoring device than the laser and the heating index calculated by a microphone signal shows similar characteristics to that calculated from velocity measured by the laser vibrometer. The microphone frequency response shows that it underestimates high frequency components but it is applicable to practical tests because it gives a conservative value of HI.

  • When a high-energy ultrasound propagates through a solid body that contains a crack or a delamination, the two faces of the defect do not ordinarily vibrate in unison, and dissipative phenomena such as friction, rubbing and clapping between the faces will convert some of the vibrational energy to heat. By combining this heating effect with infrared imaging, one can detect a subsurface defect in material in real time. In this paper a realtime detection of the brazing defect of thin Inconel plates using the UIR (ultrasonic infrared imaging) technology is described. A low frequency (23 kHz) ultrasonic transducer was used to infuse the welded Inconel plates with a short pulse of sound for 280 ms. The ultrasonic source has a maximum power of 2 kW. The surface temperature of the area under inspection is imaged by an infrared camera that is coupled to a fast frame grabber in a computer. The hot spots, which are a small area around the bound between the two faces of the Inconel plates near the defective brazing point and heated up highly, are observed. And the weak thermal signal is observed at the defect position of brazed plate also. Using the image processing technology such as background subtraction average and image enhancement using histogram equalization, the position of defective brazing regions in the thin Inconel plates can be located certainly.

  • In this paper, a method synthesizing speech signal using the 40 kHz ultrasonic signals reflected from the articulatory muscles was introduced and performance was evaluated. When the ultrasound signals are radiated to articulating face, the Doppler effects caused by movements of lips, jaw, and chin observed. The signals that have different frequencies from that of the transmitted signals are found in the received signals. These ADS (Acoustic-Doppler Signals) were used for estimating of the speech parameters in this study. Prior to synthesizing speech signal, a quantitative correlation analysis between ADS and speech signals was carried out on each frequency bin. According to the results, the feasibility of the ADS-based speech synthesis was validated. ADS-to-speech transformation was achieved by the joint Gaussian mixture model-based conversion rules. The experimental results from the 5 subjects showed that filter bank energy and LPC (Linear Predictive Coefficient) cepstrum coefficients are the optimal features for ADS, and speech, respectively. In the subjective evaluation where synthesized speech signals were obtained using the excitation sources extracted from original speech signals, it was confirmed that the ADS-to-speech conversion method yielded 72.2 % average recognition rates.

  • In this study, the theoretical method and the finite element analysis were designed in parallel to fabricate basic research data on the production of tool horn for cutting machine with ultrasonic vibration energy. In order to perform high-performance ultrasonic cutting, it is necessary to vibrate only with longitudinal vibration instead of transverse vibration. In order to efficiently transmit the mechanical vibration energy, the maximum amplitude should be generated at the output portion. Therefore, the tool horn must be designed so that the excitation frequency of the oscillator and the natural frequency of the tool horn are the same. In order to design the resonance of the tool horn, there are a theoretical approach using the one-dimensional wave equation and a method of reflecting the finite element analysis result to the design model. In this study, the approximate dimensions of the tool horn are first determined through the one- Based on the results of the finite element analysis, the optimal model was selected and reflected in the final shape of the tool horn. We will use this information as the basic data of actual tool horn for cutting, and will compare the production and experimental data with the contents of this research.

  • Various modeling techniques for ultrasonic wave propagation and scattering problems in finite solid media are presented. Elastodynamic boundary value problems in inhomogeneous multi-layered plate-like structures are set up for modal analysis of guided wave propagation and numerically solved to obtain dispersion curves which show propagation characteristics of guided waves. As a powerful modeling tool to overcome such numerical difficulties in wave scattering problems as the geometrical complexity and mode conversion, the Boundary Element Method(BEM) is introduced and is combined with the normal mode expansion technique to develop the hybrid BEM, an efficient technique for modeling multi mode conversion of guided wave scattering problems. Time dependent wave forms are obtained through the inverse Fourier transformation of the numerical solutions in the frequency domain. 3D BEM program development is underway to model more practical ultrasonic wave signals. Some encouraging numerical results have recently been obtained in comparison with the analytical solutions for wave propagation in a bar subjected to time harmonic longitudinal excitation. It is expected that the presented modeling techniques for elastic wave propagation and scattering can be applied to establish quantitative nondestructive evaluation techniques in various ways.

  • Unlike fossil-or nuclear fuel-based power generation, wind power generation using inexhaustible wind energy is a pollution-free, hazardless power generation method. In this study, ultrasound thermography is used for fabricating specimens of wind power generator bearings and wind power generator supplement flanges, and an optimally designed ultrasound horn and ultrasound excitation system are used for detecting damage to part materials of a wind power generation setup. In addition, thermal flow analysis and ultrasonic thermography imaging are comparatively analyzed for improving the detection reliability in terms of surface and internal defects of part materials and for verifying the developed system's field applicability and reliability.

  • Since MFC(macro-fiber composite) transducer has been developed, many researchers have tried to apply this transducer on SHM(structural health monitoring), because it is so flexible and durable that it can be easily embedded to various kinds of structures. The objective of this paper is to figure out the benefits and feasibility of applying MFC transducers to guided wave technique. For this, we have experimentally tested the performance of MFC patches as transmitter and sensors for excitation and reception of guided waves on the thin aluminum alloy plate. In order to enhance the signal accuracy, we applied the FIR filter for noise reduction as well as used STFT(short-time Fourier transform) algorithm to image the guided wave characteristics clearly. From the results, the guided wave generated based on MFC showed good agreement with its theoretical dispersion curves. Moreover, the ultrasonic Lamb wave techniques based on MFC patches in pitch-catch manner was tested for detection of surface notch defects of which depths are 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% of the aluminum plate thickness. Results showed that the notch was detectable well when the notch depth was 10% of the thickness or greater.
