  • Steam Generator is one of the most important structural part of nuclear power plant. It is manufactured by welding process of various steel forgings such as shell, head, torus and tube sheet. These steel forgings have been made by open die forging process. After steel melting and ingot making, open die forging has been carried out to get a good quality which means high soundness and homogeniety of the steel forgings by using high capacity hydraulic press. This paper introduced open die forging status and investigated forging method of the ultra large steel forgings which is used for the steam generator of 1000MW nuclear power plant. For the same thing. the type of steel forgings consisting steam generator is classified by shell, head, torus and tube sheet. And corresponding forging processes of the steel forgings have been investigated.

  • The prototype SFR has currently been under design by KAERI. The size of its major components is much larger than that of APR1400 and high temperature materials are applied for it. The increased size of components and those specific materials effect on material procurement, manufacturing process and fabrication facilities. The manufacturing methods are studied for Reactor Vessel/Guard Vessel, Control Rod Drive Mechanism, Heat Exchanger, Primary Pump, Reactor Vessel Internals, Steam Generator and In-Vessel Transfer Machine. The proper manufacturing methods are suggested for each component including side forging technology for ultra large forgings of Reactor Vessel to minimize the weld seams on which In-service Inspection should be conducted.

  • The Electro-thermal Explosion Coating (EEC) technique is a new surface treatment technology emerged in recent years. It uses an electrical discharge (with very high voltage from 5 to 30 kV or more) to produce a pulse current with large density inside the material to be deposited, the metal wire undergo the heating, melting, vaporization, ionization and explosion processes in a very short time (from tens ns to several hundreds ${\mu}s$), and the melted droplets shoot at the substrate with a very high velocity (3000 - 4500 m/s), so that the coating materials can be deposited on the surface of the substrate. Coatings with nano-size grains or ultra- fine grains can be formed because of rapid solidification (cooling rate up to $10^6-10^9\;k/s$). Surface of the substrate (about $1-5{\mu}m$ in depth) can be melted rapidly and coatings with very high bonding strength can be obtained.
